The tests are switching to a Europe wide footprint either this week or next. Real are performing tests in Germany on the Zapper and PVR boxes and once these tests are complete the Europe wide footprint will be switched on.

12688 H 22000 FEC 2/3 is the current frequency for the German targetted tests. If this changes later I'll post those frequencies up. Essentially you'll see an MHEG 5 test screen as the real stuff needed for the tests are encrypted and usable only on a Real Digital box.

The FEC is now 1/2. Reception on zone 1 minidishes is reported in the North of England. I'll report back when I get home tonight.

My DVBViewer TransEdiit is showing the following:

    RealDigital.jpg

The channels shown are data services and as such aren't visible in the standard DVBviewer application.

What satellite is/will it be beamed from?

There's no transponder 12688 H on my transponder list for either of those satellites.

You have to add it manually.

Meanwhile...the MHEG screen looks like this:

There's no transponder 12688 H on my transponder list for either of those satellites.

Because that frequency hasn't been used before. EB1 has reconfigurable virtual transponders.

Anything further on Real Digital? What's their latest launch date for the UK? I would've thought they'd be trying to get in ahead of a new round of FTA channels on 1N...

    123 ITV1 HD/STV HD

wonder which one you get ? (I get both for free )

STV for Scottish EPG, ITV for everyone else would be my guess

Looking like this service is a bit of a joke so far.

We shall see how it develops.. My thoughts are that it will be a massive flop.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

That list has just reminded me of something, why can we get dozens of Indian/African/Arabian channels for nowt but nothing from any other European country?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,818 ✭✭✭Minstrel27

Probably not enough demand as the European stuff can be gotten very easily from Hotbird and Astra 1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

Here's the FTA list of channels that Real Digital will be broadcasting as posted on Their site last week. Nothing in it for anyone that has FTA already.

No, they are just broadcasting a proprietary EPG that needs a viewing card. REAL Digital aren't broadcasting ANY FTA channel that is already there.
    http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=143

you will be charged periodically to keep the card alive or for a new one.

    Note EPG position:?
    108 Information TV
    109 Information TV+1
    110 Showcase
    111 Showcase 2

Information TV is one of the Real Digital partners along with David Henry of "Rapture TV" fame and Fortec Star. REAL Digital has Information TV as their address.
Without selling Sky Sports at a Profit they can't sustain their EPG and the REAL Digital boxes will then lose the 7 Day EPG if REAL Digital go bust.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,035 ✭✭✭rlogue

Where have they said they'll charge for cards?

That Digital Spy thread where you like hanging out is a ridiculous zoo full of Sky fanboys. Some libellous statements being made there too.

Not sure it's a joke, but there's just no point until there's pay content. Why would you get that, when you can have Freesat with the accompanying guarantees that it'll last? Sky Sports and/or other Pay content will make or break it.

I must disagree, if they somehow manage to get RTE on there with no monthly fee it will be a runner . Having said that I don't see it happening in the short term.

Maybe. However, I'm not sure Ireland is that crucial to their ultimate success or failure. Also, a certified combo would surely eat into any advantage?

On your first point I agree they are paying no real attention at all to this market . A certified combo still needs an aerial , this only needs a dish however its all pretty academic at this point , in my view they have been pretty amateur so far .

I reckon because Real would need to carry the Irish channels entirely at their expense they will get the pay element up and running before they take on the Irish channels.

They are predicting Spring for Sky Sports 1 & 2 but there are other channels that they are in negotiation with, another sports provider and another entertainment provider, neither of whom have been mentioned anywhere yet in connection with Real.

The court case that allowed other operators such as RD to access SS1 and SS2 applied to the UK only though, didn't it?

If if they do get permission resell in RoI, I expect Sky will insist that they use the versions of SS1 and SS2 with Irish adverts, pushing their costs up further.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71,142 ✭✭✭✭L1011

The intent was at least to have all Real-specific channels in MPEG4 w/AAC for the SD variants, but if they carry SS HD that doesn't give any savings (as it already is MPEG4 clearly).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,035 ✭✭✭rlogue

The agreements brokered by the Competition Appeals Tribunal give access to the SD versions of SS1 & SS2, not the HD versions.

Just spoken to David Henry. There will not be a charge to keep the card alive. There will be a charge to replace lost cards.

What do you think of the idea of using the 9e Saorsat feeds to provide Irish customers with the Irish channels?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,907 ✭✭✭✭Kristopherus

Is that what Real Digital intend to do?

It's certainly an option as would be a Real Digital provided feed on 28 east or maybe using the Saorview or Saorsat feeds.

No-one needs REAL Digital for Saorsat + Freesat.

It ONLY makes sense as Pay TV platform with Sky Sport.

He can say what he likes about the card charges today. When they are short of money they will look for a Card subscription.

Anyone buying a box that needs a viewing card for just the EPG of FTA channels that can be killed at any time can expect to be held hostage.

If the Real Digital box supports Diseqc and non-REAL Digital EPG channels and MHEG5 then anyone can use it for 9E Ka-Sat as well as REAL Digital service.

    http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?p=55336047#post55336047

Note They can't sell the card with the box as they plan and offer Encrypted RTE/TG4/TV3 on 28E. They can ONLY provide encrypted Irish TV (at their own encryption and carriage expense) by posting cards to Irish addresses. A phone / SMS enabled card sold with box has ZERO geographic restriction.

Where is REAL's network of installers to do anything other than capitalise on Sky Churn for Sky Sports?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,035 ✭✭✭rlogue

To answer the factual part of your post, yes, the boxes support DiseqC switching, DVB EPG and MHEG 5 so they would be ideal for for mixing Real Digital, UK FTA and Saorsat.

The rest of your post is opinion and if anyone wants to be totally misled by all means follow the DigitalSpy link. I prefer my muppets to be made of felt and operated by Jim Henson.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

Most of the misleading posts on Digital Spy are speculation about the Pay TV offering (as yet nothing definite beyond possibility of SS1, SS2 and Blackbelt TV) or quotes from REAL Digital that have later been proven to be in error.

I agree that there is almost nothing of substance in the Digital Spy thread, especially from the dwindling band of REAL Digital fans. The most dubious posts are from a couple of REAL Digital "supporters". This is because of an almost total lack of reliable information from REAL Digital, but a lot of Aspirations.

As yet there is still no evidence of a sustainable plan by REAL Digital to compete in Satellite Pay TV. The more recent suggestion that they could be a FTA platform (EPG enabled only by card) competing with Freesat is laughable and commercially totally unsustainable.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,035 ✭✭✭rlogue

You have taken the pay model you did for that shelved pay TV service and made the same assumptions about Real Digital that you made for your service.

This is wrong since Real is run on a far lower cost basis than you state. Cash is in the bank and they are in talks with some serious investors. Pay TV deals with other companies are being made.

There is a lot of distorted propaganda out there about Real Digital but if it succeeds it will blow open the pay TV Market in a way not seen before.

There are many organisations that do not want Real to succeed. After all a lie is half way around the world before the truth gets its boots on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,341 ✭✭✭✭Tony

I hope they do succeed but Real Digital are not helping themselves at all with missed deadlines and a general lack of information as to what is going on . The "sorry we've been really busy" excuse sounds so amateur in my view.

    111 Showcase 2
And here we have an example of how delusional the operators of REAL Digital are. Do they really think their own "channels" deserve such a high EPG placing?

Has anybody EVER watched them for more than 30 seconds, really? Pure and utter tripe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,351 ✭✭✭basill

Having only SS1 and 2 is no good to them. Sky will simply play dirty like they did with ITV digital many moons ago. Sky will put big matches onto SS3 and 4 and change them at short notice as well. People that have left Sky to go over will be enticed back with discounts. Those that never wanted Sky in the first place but liked the idea of cheap sports without having to pay a big monthly sub will soon realise that only having SS1 and 2 is next to useless and will drop it after a while.

    Its all deja vu!

This is wrong since Real is run on a far lower cost basis than you state. Cash is in the bank and they are in talks with some serious investors. Pay TV deals with other companies are being made.

I really and honestly hope you are right and I'm wrong. I've had (via electronic media) discussions with David Henry. Let's say they reduced any optimism I might have had. I'm no fan of Sky or Murdoch. Quite the reverse. I can't state in Public what I think of Sky's past practices in UK and Italy to ensure market share.

Sky do that now then they are in big trouble with OFCOM.

The DS moderation has lost patience and don't see the thread there as valid Entertainment. All Discussion of REAL Digital is banned on DS now till further notice.

I'd suggest there isn't much to discuss till the basic box and PVR box are actually selling somewhere and there is a firm date, price and content for Pay TV.

And here we have an example of how delusional the operators of REAL Digital are. Do they really think their own "channels" deserve such a high EPG placing?

Has anybody EVER watched them for more than 30 seconds, really? Pure and utter tripe.

I would argue that Sky Simpsons, erm, Sky 1 in its condition when Sky Digital launched deserved to be in the kids section and not on 106. Operators always push their own channels higher.

Based on Viewing figures if you had 800 channels, 101 to 9xx, with virtually no gaps and PPV movies on a separate Menu:

    Sky one = 201
    Sky sport = 202
Information Tv etc.. about equal 701 to 801

I asked some questions on RD facebook page.

There are channel lists and a EPG, how many channels from that list has a full 7 day EPG?

Where can I find the conditions of sale before ordering a box over the phone?

Got no reply, they deleted my post.

Not all the channels have a 7 day EPG according to this months "What Satellite & Digital TV" magazine.
It did not say how many did not have it.

RD have banned me from posting on their facebook page, I only asked those two questions before I ordered their box.

They have just lost another customer.

That should not be necessary, they should treat everyone with courtesy and respect .

I would agree, however there were a few trolls from the DS thread who posted abusive messages on the Facebook page. Those messages were removed.

I keep an eye on the Facebook page and don't recall the posts that the user channels talks about but then again I'm not monitoring it 24/7!!

I agree of course abusive and trolling posts should be removed. I guess its hard to have a view without seeing the exact post but the previous poster says hes been banned, a bit harsh if as he says he was merely asking questions.
