Very interesting article in yesterdays Sunday independent. It is about an encounter a journalist had with a group of Martin McGuinness' 'campaign crew' outside the RTE studios last friday.

The article can be found here: http://www.independent.ie/opinion/an...n-2893552.html

TL;DR version: Journalist spots McGuinness pulling up in a BMW X5 SUV and a VW Passat. Thinking this was interesting considering he's only on €35,000 euro a year he decided to grab a photo. Those accompanying McGuinness didn't like this and approached the journo. He assured them all plates would be blacked out etc. The four lads got aggressive and started shouting abuse including "Sunday Independent! I should have known. F**king gob****e! Thick!". All this was going on with MmG himself less than six feet away. He did nothing to resolve the situation. It took a RTE press office worker to pluck up the courage to come to the journo's aid.

This just shows caliber of person SF and McGuinness are(excuse the pun). It seems to similar in style to a certain organisation. So the question is, how much have these people really changed since the peace process. A case of you can't teach old dogs new tricks?

So you're saying it didn't happen? Or the indo are a disgrace for publishing it. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't leave themselves open by publishing lies on the matter. The people of the country have every right to know who they're voting for.

What does a self respecting SF supporter read, the daily star? The sun perhaps?

Only a few weeks ago there was a report saying Gerry showed up at a hotel in a fancy SUV for a press conference. That was a blatant lie as I know for a fact he walked from the Dail to the hotel. Pinch of salt needed.

lmao. So he has to walk around Ireland now does he. Have you ever got a lift in a nice fancy car op. What would the story be if he had pulled up in a clapped out merc.

    hilarious if you wernt serious.

just to clear this insinuating piece of drivel up, did the 4 men approach the journalist or was he standing at the entrance to the building?

In what way where they threating to the journalist?

In what way did the rte press officer PLUCK UP the courage to AID this poor unfortunate camera man?

    STOP WITH THE NONSENSE.

Especially if there writing about loyalists isn't that right keithafc do you remember MARTIN O HAGEN the only journalist murdered in the six counties.

In the early 1990s, he wrote several pieces about the Ulster Volunteer Force's Mid Ulster Brigade. He coined the nickname, "the rat pack" for this group and "King Rat" for their leader Billy Wright. Wright founded the Loyalist Volunteer Force a breakaway loyalist faction. He was responsible for an attack on the Sunday World offices in Belfast and threatened to kill O'Hagan. Wright himself was assassinated by the Irish National Liberation Army in 1997
On 28 September 2001 Martin and his wife Marie walked to "Fa' Joe's" pub, a well-known mixed bar on Lurgan's Market Street, for their usual Friday night drink together. The pub had been Martin's favourite for many years. As they walked home to Westland Gardens, close to the loyalist Mourneview Estate, a car pulled slowly alongside them just yards from their house. Martin pushed his wife into a hedge as a gunman opened fire from the car hitting him several times. As he lay wounded he asked his wife to summon an ambulance. When she returned from doing so he was dead.
Martin O'Hagan murder was "claimed" by the Red Hand Defenders, a nom de guerre used by the Loyalist Volunteer Force

Has nothing to do with Loyalists. No Loyalist is running in the election and they aren't questioning and frankly annoying a Loyalist. It is Martin Mcguinness who is having the questions thrown at him.

So this story about the journalist being abused by "associates" is a concern.

    What is your point?

To the actual topic, Martin Mcguinness has no problem with taking credit for certain things like the GFA. So he should accept the criticism and try not to lose the head like he did with the west brits comment.

Another story that proves people like Martin McGuinness and associates are nothing more than a mafia. Do we really want common criminals like this as our President. Sinn Fein nothing more than a front for murderers, torturers, maimers, thieves, kidnappers and extortionists. Makes you wonder if Adam's brother was a member, then they could add another crime to their collection.

More Sinn Fein bashing and mud slinging. Terrible thread altogether, it poses nothing to learn from or any new information other than the usual crap slung at people who support Sinn Fein.
Everybody knows that there is a large amount of journalists that love to bash Sinn Fein and would go to any lengths to promote their own political agenda. It is also in their interest as most newspapers would not be pro-Sinn Fein in anyway. And would be pleasing their bosses and editors by publishing such stuff.

well done on tarring everyone with the same brush because all republicans are illiterate gun toting idiots. No seriously I do appreciate your tabloid-esque post, it really reflects on the thread. I really hope you return to give your political opinion sometime in the future on politics.

Can none of the SF fans defend the actions? it is a published story so deserves consideration rather than the usual 'agenda' or 'bias' comments. Surely its not hard to come up with better excuses than the usuals here.
    I'll make a few suggestions:
    1. Reaction was due to media intrusion.
    2. Papparazi type photographer.
    3. Did'nt like the look of the photographer.

    etc, etc.

well I suppose nobody from here saw it and I imagine other media outlets mentioned would have seen the commotion given they were there? My guess and it is a guess is that he was approached but not in such a harsh manner and decided he could make a story about this.

MMG was on private property, so the press had no right to photograph him. He also has a credible death threat over him from the dissidents, so snapping his security detail is moody as well.

'MMG didn't stop bold men shouting at me when I was breaking the law'. Seriously?

But most tedious in all this is that the Sindo, are yet again, placing themselves front and centre in the news. 'Look at me taking risks to bring you de trooth'

When is the election so I can be spared this bullshít?

Nope. But as anyone else, fully entitled to post on the topic. I ain't slating Mcguinness for his IRA past. I am defending people who do though. Just as people are entitled to slate the Ulster volunteers part in the conflict.

Ah come on! Id expect this type of post from other people but now you. You are better than that. This is the Sunday Indo we are talking about here, I wouldnt trust anything they say about anyone never mind when they are trying to sling mud at Sinn Fein.

Jank why are you surprised. I have always been against the IRA and their alter ego Sinn Fein. It doesn't surprise me in the least that McGuinness is being ferried around like a mafia don with a bunch of heavies to push people around.

One additional question would be who is funding these vehicles?

Is Northern Irish taxpayers monies being used to fund Martins Southern misadventure?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 13,018 ✭✭✭✭jank

It is one thing being against Sinn Fein and the IRA but jumping on this poor excuse of a thread and proclaiming it as further "proof" that then confirms more so your own suspicion of what Sinn Fein is like is foolish to say the least. This is not about the rights and wrongs of Sinn Fein as that has been done to death. This is about a poorly written piece as another attempt to smear a presidential candidate.

There will be more of this next week and the week after until the election is over. I just thought you of all people would know not to believe everything you read in the paper. The Sindo have always had a hard on in knocking Sinn Fein therefore whatever they say in the next couple of weeks should be dismissed out of hand especially an op-ed like that article.

He is being ferried around because he is under threat from the dissidents.

What? So if a press photographer stuck his lens in your living room window you wouldn't call the cops?

You cannot go onto private property and take photos of people without their consent. Even CCTV on private property must be announced.

Take your pick from the Data Protection act or the Privacy and Human Rights act 2003

I do. It is very, very strictly against them with all the celebs and whatnot in and out of the place.

I have no horse in the presidential race. My angle here is ****e journalism. Paps breaking the law and then when told to scram by MMG's bodyguards, making out that its some sort of fascistic threat.
