Was a Shannon supporter as a kid, went to some games in Thomond Park with my Father and his good friend whose wife used to run Thomond Park. That got me hooked. Some Cousins and friends played for Shannon over in Coonagh so used to go to games to see them. Never travelled to see them. Hit a bit of a lull period in following Rugby around my leaving cert 9 years ago, picked it up again around 5 years ago watching Munster, and Ive been a fully paid up member of the Munster Supporters Club about 3 and a half years now. (ha ha bandwagoner??)

I still follow shannon closely however I havent been to a game with them in about 5 years. But the only Munster Game Ive missed was against the Ospreys recently when my Godson was getting Confirmed in Cork.. (everyone remembers this game right? the one where only 10,000 showed up after loosing to Harlequins)

Also Munster although only a recent supporter after a good friend started playing for them (I always supported Munster anyway growing up but Leinster were my preference then). I still have a soft spot for Leinster

Leinster. Had a season ticket for the 04/05 season but I moved to Cork so didn't renew.

Go to Musgrave for some Munster games - just because I love the sport, and follow the local teams to get the fix :)

The Kingdom Of Mide, the long forgotten fifth province.
We shall return and dominate someday.

any chance of a poll? would be interested in how the forum is split. I'd expect us to be very low on Ulster numbers.

I've been following Irish rugby for about 14/15 years and that lead me to provincial rugby. I've been a Leinster fan since the wet evenings with Nathan Spooner in about 2001/2002.

    Munster, obviously.

I went to my first Munster match aged 4...I used to go to a lot of Shannon games back then too but I haven't been to an AIL game in years. But yeah basically as far back as I can remember I've supported Munster and gone to games.

But I've found it harder to go in recent years, due to money and transport. Buses in Limerick (and I assume most of Ireland) are a disgrace.

Watched rugby for years, was a Leinster/Ireland fan and went to odd match, took the plunge last season and bought a season ticket, went to all games I could, including the Thomond matchs and Cardiff to watch them lift Heino cup. Back again this season but only made it so far to one game, the one yesterday.

Would always cheer for Munster in Heino cup if not against Leinster and the same with Ulster!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,808 ✭✭✭maddness

Grew up playing rugby for a Dublin club and supporting the AIL when it use to get the big crowds. Leinster were far less important back then as a good AIL game could have 6 or 7 internationals playing.
In the last ten years club rugby has suffered so much on the back of the success of the professional teams.
Leisnter first then any irish team playing anyone else.

Always been a Leinster fan since I can remember.. been actively attending matches since 2004ish...

But I actively follow all Irish club rugby.. mostly because we're very limited and whilst rivalry is healthy so is having a strong player base. Munster being top of their game is just as important as Leinster being there.

To the same extent I always think that Leinster wouldn't be the team they are today without munster...

Shannon, Munster, Ireland and then any other Irish province that are not playing against Munster or a result that will have a direct impact on Munster's progress.

Been following Shannon since the mid 80s and Munster since the mid 90s and Ireland on TV (Black and White) since I was a kid.

Followed Leinster for the last 10 years since was in secondary school and playing there. Support all other Irish provinces in HEC and Pro12 when against the "foreigners" ;)

Also joined local club this year so back playing and hopefully get to see some club games if time allows this year.

I try to get to games when i can but finding time is more an issue. Scrambled over to Cardiff in May to see Leinster pull off a great win in the HEC final.

Connacht, finally had the money to buy a season ticket this year, but been going to them since I can remember.. rainy windy days when you'd be lucky to have 100-200 at the game- good times. Unreal to see how far they've come, and the new Clan Terrace is fantastic

always support other provinces when they are playing- doesn't really make sense not supporting fellow irish teams if it doesn't directly affect your own club

that said i have been known to go for other teams V Ulster in the league come end of season if i feel Connacht have a chance of coming 3rd highest province ha :D

i have no alliances in Munster-Leinster matches- just want good match
usually go for ulster if they are playing Munster or Leinster- as they usually the underdog

Connacht. Ever since I was a young lad. Absolutely delighted with how they've been performing recently! I moved to Dublin about 4 years ago though so if not Connacht then Leinster. They're very easy to support.

I don't get the mentality among certain fans that they'd support the foreign team over their own country's province; especially in HEC after their own team has been knocked out.

From Connacht but I must say I fear for our Heineken Cup hopes! We'll do well to get a point, our squad is poor, no denying it. Prob the worst in the Heineken Cup apart from Aironi! Have a soft spot for Ulster would love to see them making Heinken Cup quarter finals on a regular basis!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,375 ✭✭✭padser

Ireland first and foremost followed by Leinster. Support any of the other provinces provided it's not bad for Leinster although I'm not above gloating to mates who support Munster when they lose! :-)

Deep down though I prefer to see Munster winning most of the the time - it wouldn't be good for Ireland / Leinster unless one of the other provinces improves to the point where they provide Leinster with genuine competition! :-p

First match was around 2005 and I got my first season ticket in 2009 / 2010 so on my third year now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 302 ✭✭Principal Skinner

From dublin and support Leinster. Been super lucky as my dad is as big a fan as I am so he started taking me to games from about 3 and went consistently from when I was 5!

Wow that's 13 years now! Have only missed one Leinster home match in that space of time (due to a wedding) and been extremely fourtanate to have been at some great Leinster matches, both finals, both semis in tolouse, bath where bod ran riot, sarries last year, numerous ulster and munster matches and hoping to do connaught this year! So yeah huge Leinster fan!

Ulster are my second team, love to see them do well, great fans who can have some craic!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,684 ✭✭✭JustinDee

Don't follow any of the provinces over another. They all provide the playerbase for the national squad and help broaden the game throughout the island.
What I want is Irish teams winning Six Nations, and the branch teams winning the ERC competition (Heineken and Amlin) and the RaboDirect Pro12 comp.
If watching Irish provinces play each other, I tend to watch player performances over anything else.

    Leinster.

When Leinster are not playing, I support all three other Irish provinces. I would probably put Munster slightly ahead of Ulster/Conn because I lived in Waterford for 14 years.

I've been a supporter of Irish rugby since primary school. I'm from Cork, went to a rugby secondary school then, so my teens and a few years into college were spent going to Munster Schools Junior & Senior Cup matches.

However, I never really got into the provincial thing. The ould fella was a GAA man through and through, and it was always an interest in international rugby and schools rugby that came about via my club rugby and going to a rugby school.

When the HC started then, I simply supported all the provinces, with a support of Munster coming naturally as I'm from there.

I live in Dublin and I go to all the internationals I can (other than refusing to attend the 2010 Autumn internationals) but I've only been to a couple of Munster matches. I attended the HC semi this year between Leinster and Toulouse and vocally cheered on Leinster.

I'd cheer for Munster over the other provinces, and the underdog in other inter-provincial matches, but while I'm more excited during Munster matches, I freely admit to finding Leinster the more entertaining team down through the years.
