Best frontman ever?

In a poll arried out by Q magazine last year, Liam Gallagher was named as best frontman ever: http://www.metro.co.uk/metrolife/music/819062-liam-gallagher-voted-as-best-frontman-ever

The top 20 for Q's greatest frontman is as follows:

    1) Liam Gallagher
    2) Bono
    3) Freddie Mercury
    4) Damon Albarn
    5) Chris Martin
    6) Matt Bellamy
    7) Jim Morrison
    8) Bob Marley
    9) Paul McCartney
    10) John Lennon
    11) Robbie Williams
    12) Debbie Harry
    13) Mick Jagger
    14) Morrissey
    15) John Lydon
    16) James Brown
    17) Bruce Springsteen
    18) Robert Plant
    19) Tom Meighan
    20) Joe Strummer

Now,for me, Freddie Mercury was by far, the best frontman of a band ever. Third place is a joke!

Who would you give top spot to?

This is a Q magazine poll, it means absolutely nothing.

The presence of Chris Martin in the list completely invalidates the poll. Plus Debbie Harry isn't a man!

    lulz, Q Magazine indeed.

Most of them are laughably poor frontmen too, I'd take that list with a pinch of salt anyway... No Mike Patton, No Credibility.

True, but I guess it's kind of sexist just to include men.... or something.

To be fair, nor is Chris Martin.

That poll is a farce. Robbie Williams? Chris Martin? And say what you want about him but Axl Rose deserves to be in the top ten there. Freddie Mercury is a stand out number one..Jim Morrison 2nd.. Ah polls annoy me.

Chuck D should be on the list.

Probably an unpopular opinion here but Bono is definitely deserved of the No. 1 spot. Mercury No. 2 as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,962 ✭✭✭✭dark crystal

Personally, i would have had Mercury first, Jagger second and Morrison third.

Also surprisng not to see the likes of Daltrey and Cobain included, while Robbie Williams and James Brown are.

I might have come across wrong in my first post, I'm not deeming this a pointless thread. It is an absurd list from Q, Liam Gallagher as best frontman ever? So all you need to do is walk out on stage, grunt into the microphone for 2 hours while maintaining your upper body at a frontward diagonal tilt, keep your arms behind your back, and absolutely murder some well-written (and recorded) tunes. Here you go Mr. Gallagher, you are the world's greatest frontman. I can think of a few lists he'd be numbe one on alright, but they're not relevant to a music forum.

As far as the order of the list goes its always gna be subjective but looking at it as people who should or could be in a list like this.
The top 20 for Q's greatest frontman is as follows:

    1) Liam Gallagher (Fair enough)
    2) Bono (Fair enough)
    3) Freddie Mercury (Fair enough)
    4) Damon Albarn (nah)
    5) Chris Martin (Fair enough)
    6) Matt Bellamy (nah)
    7) Jim Morrison (Yep)
    8) Bob Marley (Yep)
    9) Paul McCartney (Which ones the frontman?)
    10) John Lennon (Which ones the frontman?)
    11) Robbie Williams (lol)
    12) Debbie Harry (Fair enough)
    13) Mick Jagger (yep)
    14) Morrissey (yes)
    15) John Lydon (Don't think so)
    16) James Brown (maybe)
    17) Bruce Springsteen (Yeah)
    18) Robert Plant (yeah)
    19) Tom Meighan (Recognised the name but had to look him up.hardly)
    20) Joe Strummer(suppose)

Don't agree with the particular order of them at all but I can see why certain ones would be chosen. As for the others they're all co-incidentally British.

    Bias Poll is Bias.

75% of them are British ffs

Ahh, but you forget, he can also play the tambourine....

Surprised Bono made it onto that list but pleased more the less.

Don't know where Robbie Williams and John Lennon came from seen as how they were not the frontmen of Take That and The Beatles.

Jon Bon Jovi should be there too.

Big Tom not on the list

As was said before it's a Q poll, it means absolutely nothing.

No Ian Curtis, Eddie Vedder, Black Francis, Michael Gira, Paul Westerberg... I could go on. I do give them credit for including Morrissey however.

That James Brown (maybe) almost had me on the floor,he could control his band with such precision, he would make them change key simultaneously mid-song without loosing a drop of that funkee groove.

Oh and Gawd Damn could that man dance

    Robbie Williams above Morrissey?!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,190 ✭✭✭Mister Jingles

Have to laugh at Robbie Williams as well there too. Removing him and swapping him with Gary Barlow would be more ideal.

Freddie Mercury deserves first place with out a doubt. Liam Gallagher shouldn't even be in the top 5 me thinks.

Freddie for the win, but where's the justice in a place for Damon and none for Jarvis?

    And wheres Mr Hendrix?

Had more charisma in his little finger than most people have in their bodies.

    Prince is my favourite.

When people talk about frontmen, they mean mean specifically in a live show situation right? Can you be a good frontman on a studio recording?

Ah no Liam has all the genetic characteristics of a frontman.

I can't think of anyone that would top him.

    No Meatloaf renders poll useless.

Well actually, Liam Gallagher at no.1 does. Liam Gallagher any where near top 10 does.

John Lennon wasn't really a front man, I'd give his place to Elton John.

Freddie Mercury has to be no. 1 though. The man made the stage his bitch for crying out loud!

Wasn't knocking him just thought James Brown was more of a solo artist tbh.

strummer should have gotten a higher place. not the best singer or guitar player but that man oozed energy and charisma.

    List is pathetic imo.

And for all the people doubting James Brown, stfu and watch this! :p

Joke. Freddie is #1 without a doubt. Jim Morrison and Robert Plant so low down the list??? you gotta be avin' a larf!!! Also, no mention of any of these (probably more missing that I can't think of, but these are off the top of my head):

    -David Lee Roth
    -Phil Lynott
    -Axl Rose
-James Hetfield (I'm not a huge Metallica fan, but goddamn, he is brilliant at getting a crowd going)
    -Bruce Dickinson
    -Ozzy Osbourne
    -Rob Halford
    -Jon Bon Jovi
    -Ronnie James Dio
    -Vince Neil
    -Bon Scott
    -Steve Tyler
    -Lemmy
    -Alice Cooper
    -Billy Idol
    -David Coverdale
    -Meat Loaf
    -Til Lindemaan
    -Anthony Kiedis
    -Klaus Meine
    -Sebastian Bach
    -Dee Snider
    -Blackie Lawless

    Joke of a list, IMO.

Whether you like him or not, and personally I think he is a bit of a knob but was a fantastic singer, there is no doubting the colossal influence Liam Gallagher had on young men, particularly in the mid 90s. Lads dressed like him, got their hair cut like him, they even walked and put on a stupid manc accent! He deserves his place on the list, probably not at the top though (i'd reserve that for jagger).

How the hell is Iggy Pop not on that list? As far as I'm concerned he's the greatest frontman of all time.
