AAI Website has following in it's weekend roundup

David Rooney (Raheny Shamrock AC), who is redshirting this cross country season with McNeese, showed good form to win the Asics McNeeese Cowboy Stampede over 4 miles in a time of 18:28, which is a new course record.

In the results themselves, he's down as "unattached". What does redshirting mean? Guesting ?

Red shirting means that the athlete is not particpating for the college during the XC season

Each athlete is allowed 4 years eligibility in each season - XC, Indoor, Outdoor

By redshirting an athlete does not use one of their years of eligibility but in order to race they have to run as "unattached" or guest as many of us know it and cannot score in the team scorings

This is quite common with athletes who have 5 year courses in college to save until their final year by opting out of one season each year (more common in XC though)

David McCarthy 21st (24:10) and Shane Quinn 31st (24:18) at the Wisconsin Invitational today. A very promising race from Quinn in his first year in America. McCarthy beat his Providence team-mate Dominic Channon by 1 second who he beat by 45 seconds at a dual meet last month so maybe he was pacing him and Quinn? I'm not sure but I was certainly expecting McCarthy to be challenging for the win.

Good performance especially when you look at some of the Freshman who were behind him:

Lukas Verzbicas,Jim and Joe Rosa all with great pedigree. Hopefully he can build from here and perform well come Conference and Regionals.

McCarthy was sick. Illness kills that man. 2009 Cross-Country season, the track season just gone and again now. Hopefully he'll get over it quickly.

Breandan O'Neill 27th (24:46) and Craig Murphy 147th (26:03) at Pre-Nationals. Winner was 23:55. Times very slow to past years probably because of weather. 22:51 is course record and the winner today is a 27:29 guy.

Does anyone have results from the Gerry Farnan event today in Dublin? Top ten in both races?

It's usually a good predictor of what's to come later in the season....

Britton won the womens race by 70 seconds. That's fairly ridiculous over 3 miles.

Teams for Euros this year ? Junior looks like the best in a long time.Under 23 lacks depth.Seniors whos training for it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 468 ✭✭runjb

Team will be interesting, AAI are coming down tougher on selection policy, and expect a smaller team for this years' championships!

I can't see how the junior teams are particularly strong this year compared to last year?? Anyone know if Ciara Magaeen is going to take part, heard of some niggle/injury she has but unsure of full story.

U23's won't be too strong, I can see maybe top two U23 women travelling, but maybe a stronger U23 men's team.

Senior teams have the possibility to be strong enough. F Briton obviously in great shape again this year, and will be vying for a medal. Don't know if Mary Cullen is aiming for XC?!

I'm not sure what Kenneallys plans are but if he can recover in time from his marathon exploits, it would be good to see him at Euro Cross. He's clearly in the shape of his life judging by his runs in Amsterdam and at National Senior Track. Well worthy of selection without running Inter Counties.

Himself and Sweeney would be top 12 contenders again at their best.

Sean Hehir seems to be running well and is aiming for cross and will challenge for a spot

Lets not forget Michael Carmody of Limerick AC who ran away, from the start, with the Munster Novice at Dromoland, Newmarket on Fergus, Co. Clare on Sunday.

Young Carmody should make the under 23 team but I think it is asking too much of him to beat the likes of Sweeney and the Mulhare brothers of destruction. Give him a few years of injury free training and racing.

Some of the cross country athletes will probably be at the road relays today in Maynooth too.

Not long now before the trails for the Euro Cross...any predictions for team places?

    Junior Men:
Kevin Dooney and Liam Brady for the two automatic spots.

    U23
Michael Mulhare by a country mile. A scrap between Dave Flynn, John Travers for the second spot.

    Senior
Joe Sweeney and Dan Mulhare for the automatoc spots.

Is Ciara Mageean interested in one last race in the Junior ranks? If so it will be her and Siofra Cleirigh Buttner in the junior ladies.

Fionnuala Britton will be well clear in the ladies. How is Mary Cullen going at the moment? Is she looking to race the trials or Euro's?

UCD with the win over DCU some very good runs from alot of the juniors who will be in the hunt for Euro XC spots

    NCAA Northeast Regional
2nd Dave McCarthy 3 seconds off win
    17th Shane Quinn
    47th Craig Murphy

    South Region
    4th Breandan O'Neill

O'Neill looks to be settled into FSU now and has filled the gap left by Ciaran O'Lionaird on the team

Joe Sweeney ran 13.30 for the '3 mile' leg. Looks like a course record for that leg to me (13.38 from Christie the quickest previously). Looks to be in better form than last year.

Fiona Mckenna 14th and third point scorer on the Iowa Central team which took home NJCAA title

Yes Fionnula Briton finished 6th home in that meet in Burgos. She lead from the gun and opened a 20m lead on the entire field (numerous world medalists) at one stage, but was realed in. However she battled hard to the finish and was well clear of the next European. All bodes well for Euro XC. Excellent racing...:D

    Women (7839m)
    1. Linet Masai (Kenya) 24:20
    2. Belaynesh Oljira (Ethiopia) 24:42
    3. Priscah Jeptoo (Kenya) 24:52
    4. Ayalew Hiwot (Ethiopia) 25:09
    5. Genzebe Dibaba (Ethiopia) 25:23
    6. Fiounnala Britton (Ireland) 25:32
    7. Rebecca Cheptege (Uganda) 26:08
    8. Hanna Walker (United Kingdom) 26:20
    9. Marta Tigabea (Ethiopia) 26:33
    10. Analia Rosa (Portugal) 26:42

Looking through results of Brugos Mick Mulhare had a great run in a top class field top 6 on the cards at euros if he keeps this up. Mark Hanrahan and Dave Flynn finished together back in the field. Looks like there wont be many teams going to Euros for Ireland this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,226 ✭✭✭✭Pherekydes

    Mark Hanrahan 55th in Spain

Whe I saw this post, I assumed it was the best Irish result from Burgos. Then I went looking: Hanrahan was 64th, not 55th, and Mulhare was 34th.

Not to mention Britton's result, previously mentioned.

Seems strange to omit better Irish results?

Standard looked really good this year. Britton is a medal contender this year.

Places for the team are starting to heat up, starting with the junior team, the following would seem to be in contention..

    Junior Women:
Ciara Magaeen (if competing, no word or race as of late)
    Kate Veale
    Mary Mulhare
    Ellie Hartnett
    Emma Mitchell

    Junior Men:
    Liam Brady
    Kevin Dooney
    Stephen Kerr
    Seán Tobin
    Seán Brady

Who else would we include for possible junior spots?

It will depend too on how strict AAI will be in implementing their selection criteria. Only top 2 over the finish line in Sligo at the inter-counties are definitely on the team, the rest will depend on the managements' decisions.

Sean Brady has no chance of making that team?:D I don't see how anybody could think otherwise.

Siofrá and Claire McCarthy are both strong contenders for the junior woman's team and don't be surprised if Mary Ann O'Sullivan is a contender either.Emyr Black has shown a return to form in the states and could be in line for a place if she returns home.Kate Veale beat Mulhare and Mitchell at the weekend so is a probable at this stage. Ciara stated that she was to have a low key cross country season so it doesn't look like she will compete.

As far as I remember Eimear Black is U23 this year. But yes, I forgot about those 3 other girls. Mary-Ann O S is in great shape as of late and should make the team, as should Siofra. Emma Mitchell had a poor run in Gerry Farnan and doesn't seem to be hitting the same heights of last 2 years. Ciara typically only ever runs the trial and the championship, so maybe expect it again this year..

If Ciara decides not to run I don't think we will see a full team in the Junior ladies. Without her Siofra should win and Kate Veale may walk away with the second automatic spot!!;) Mary Ann O'Sullivan and Mary Mulhare will also battle hard for that spot.

The junior men will be hotly contested. Liam Brady is coming into form again, Stephen Kerr has catapulted himself into the mix as has Eoghan Totten. However, I expect Kevin Dooney take the spot alongside Brady. Sean Tobin has ran well all year. Don't rule out Andrew Monaghan though, he is always capable of a big run.

By the way there is no Sean Brady despite some posters nominating him as a contender. That was a misprint for Liam in the Gerry Farnan results!!!:D:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 112 ✭✭VR46

Anyone know if Shane Quinn is looking to run in the Euros? He's had a few tough races already over in American and nationals still to come but I think that junior men's team could be our best hope for a team medal.

Individually I'll just get this prediction out of the way:

Fionnuala Britton will win the European xc!

On the men's side maybe Mulhare and Sweeney could be looking at top 10 finishes..?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 210 ✭✭Getonwithit

In Junior women I bet they take 4 - Siofra, Kate Veale for sure I think, and 2 from Mary Ann O S Mary Mulhare and Emma Mitchell.
Junior Mens will be a good team I think. Quinn with Dooney, Tobin and then go from A Monaghan, Liam Brady, Stephen Kerr, Eoghan Totten, Ruairi Finnegan, Peter Hnarahan, Stepen Lawlor and Shane Fitzsimmons. I rate their chances in tat order as well... Depends how many they bring? Should Jake Byrne be considered? Tommy Casey?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 468 ✭✭runjb

I have a feeling too that AAI are going to cut the number of athletes travelling to these championships. The junior ladies team if spear headed by Ciara could be strong. Without Ciara a team medal would be definitely out of the question and so selectors will react accordingly.

Junior men's, I've heard Quinn is open to running the Euro XC, depending on how his next race goes in the US. Like every year, once the US athletes have something left in the tank they'll generally put themselves forward to Europeans. Expect a strong team if Quinn makes it.

    Onto U23, any thoughts?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 210 ✭✭Getonwithit

If Quinn runs then a great strong level pack in behind him. Junior mens good team.. Fingers crossed

23s Mens Travers, Jennings after his relay run last week
23s Women Tough here, have we a viable team?? Deidre Doyle...

    Any other names?
