I can't tell you how frustrated I feel listening to Ryle Nugent and Tony Ward commentate on tonight's Dragons Vs Ulster game!!!! Why on earth have RTE left their #1 team at home while forcing us to listen to Hugh Cahill (really poor) and Donal Lenihan (ok, but no ward) on Sunday morning!!
I understand that Ryle Nugent is head of sport, but this RWC could be the greatest sporting success our country has ever seen.
Please please RTE, send the guys out for the next round!!!
Anybody have any info on this? I'm hoping they will send out at lease one more commendatory team before the QF's where they have every game live.

Cahill is the most boring commentator on the box at the moment, he doesn't have the charisma you associate with good commentators. I don't like Nugent much either but he's a helluva lot better to listen to than Cahill.

I don't like Ryle Nugent. At all. I prefer Hugh Cahill.

You can't have the head of sport out of action, which is pretty much what he would with the time difference, for such a long period of time. Plus the amount of games RTE wouldn't justify sending them over.

I actually prefer Cahill and like Lenihan myself. Though I do tend to watch Setanta over RTE.

Maybe Ward was asked and wasn't available

Maybe they didn't want to travel to NZ for two months...

Everybody is entitled to their preference, but I can't understand how you prefer Cahill over Nugent!! Sure Nugent is no Myles Harrison, etc, but he brings some life and excitement into the overall package.
Cahill actually made the Ire vs Aus game feel like Poor All-Ireland League Division 2B game.
I never though I'd say this, but I'll probably watch Sundays game on ITV.

Nearly all NH commentators are rubbish and I think that the RTE guys are some of the worst, ever single one of them. The Irish lads on ITV are far better, including Quinlan and Dempsey. I have to go to the southern hemisphere tv to get some decent commentary.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,979 ✭✭✭✭phog

Actually I prefer Cahill to Nugent.

I think Hugh Cahill sounds a bit like Ryan Tubridy is a bit off putting tbh

IMHO Quinlan has been excellent, unbiased and knowledgeable, far far better than Pil Vickery (also ITV co-commentator) who sounds as if he's cheering on his former team from the subs bench!

Yes, his coverage has been top drawer. Never a fan of his as a player but I look forward to listening to him as a commentator. Vickery hasn't been so bad, apart from in the Argentinian game when he became unbearable praising Lawes blatantly dirty play.

If you have Setanta Ireland (I have it via UPC) then the HD option is excellent. Conor Morris knows his onions but doesn't claim to have a RWC medal at home. Co-commentator Ciaran Fitz is excellent - personally I prefer him to Lenihan, he's more 'down to earth' or similar - it's the lack of cliches along with the insightful points he makes....the studio stuff (pre and post match)I can take or leave from any channel - too much flannel altogther for me.....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,883 ✭✭✭shuffol

Is Hugh Cahill the commentator who over obsesses about every players weight, he must've gotten a weighing scales for christmas when he was a child

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 865 ✭✭✭A Disgrace

I think Nugent and Ward are flying out for the knock-outs, I hope so anyway, cos Cahill is totally devoid of any emotion and makes even the best game sound boring..

Lenihan is actually quite good, and really gets into it, but give me Ward any day, especially after his commentary during the Grand Slam win versus Wales

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,674 ✭✭✭Dangerous Man

I never understood the hatred of Nugent. The guy loves the game; it's so obvious from his commentary - he knows more than just a thing or two as well. I think he's bloody brilliant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,699 ✭✭✭bamboozle

i prefer Lenihan and Cahill, like Ward dont like Ryle.

RTe have only one decent Rugby commentator imo and he is on the Radio,Michael Corcoran.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,969 ✭✭✭✭alchemist33

I vote for Nugent and Ward too. But there is never -- NEVER -- a good reason to watch sport on ITV when there is an alternative.

    Tremenjus.

Any comentator who calls Trinh-Duc "Trin Duck" is on my "shoot if I get the chance" list.

Are RTE showing all the quarter final games? If so they will need more commentators out in NZ as the 4 games are over two days in different cities.

Conor Morris is all right, but setanta still haven't replaced Mark Robson as their main man!!! Have sky, and couldn't justify in subscribing to setanta for the amount of exclusive sport they have.

    Totally agree......and I really hope you're right!!!

I would have said exactly that statement a few weeks ago.......see what Hugh Cahill has done to me!!!! :D
Having said the above.....maybe Cahill is bringing us luck, it might all fall apart if we switch commentators!!!

Yep, RTE are shown all games live in the knock out stages.
They will probably send out one more commentary team, and ask the teams to do double shifts for QF's (or commentate on two from Donnybrook).

I am not too familiar with the rte commentators but the one i liked is the main commentator for the year ireland won the grand slam. what is his name?

Hugh Cahill is very annoying - at least Nugent is knowledgeable and he doesn't sound like Ryan Tubridy!!

I think the big issue which everyone should be outraged at is the fact that RTE coverage of the World Cup in it entirety has been not short of abysmal.

Why aren't they showing more matches other than the Ireland ones.

Its an absolute outrage in my opinion. This is the Rugby World Cup.

Because setanta outbid them on the overall rights!!!!
RTE will have all the matches live from QF's onwards. We're actually lucky for that.....only Irish games are protected by law for terrestrial transmission. (remember four years ago with tv3).

Personally I don't mind the package RTE has secured...especially with the timezone difference......but I do object to third rate commentary for the Irish games!!!

I like Nugent as much as the next guy, and his enthusiasm is fantastic, but if I have to hear "oh you beauty" about 500 times that early in the morning, I'll probably shoot my TV :pac:

Don't forget "On this occasion" and "Sheer will and determination".

I HAAAAATE Ryle Nugent, I'm glad he's not in NZ.

Much prefer Hugh Cahill to Nugent. Granted he sounds like Tubridy, and he has a face for radio, but I think his player knowledge is superior and he calls it a he see's it. Unfortunately Nugent is going over for the knock out stages (deffo semi and final)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 489 ✭✭petebricquette

I like Nugent but he's a bit annoying. Ward is excellent. I think they should get Shaggy and Conor O'Shea commentating on matches for us. Those two and Ben Kay were great tonight on the highlights show.

Much of a muchness there bud.Hamiltons a Nordy Prod..:D.He always refers to rangers as GLASGOW RANGERS. And he thinks its a DISGRACE how Rangers players get booed while playing for their country in Ireland.Still though.George is harmless. And a decent commentator.

He had a heart bypass operation a few weeks ago

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 317 ✭✭bigjohnny80

Don't like nugent at all. He's full of cliches and doesn't really have a great knowledge of the game. You can tell he's a fan but that doesn't make him a good commentator.

He's gets overexcited at the wrong times and isn't comfortable leaving any empty air time.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,684 ✭✭✭JustinDee

Some of the best commentary is actually the biased line.
Michael Corcoran gets so much into the game he's calling on radio. Its as entertaining as the game itself.

Dead-on bloke too. Great to chat sports with.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,900 ✭✭✭✭Riskymove

well its discussions like this which make me say, all the more heart-felt:

    R.I.P. Bill McLaren

It just has never been the same since!!

    Where is George Hamilton , nugents a tosser and a D4 d1ckhead.

Hamilton is one of the least knowledgeable rugby commentators I have ever had the misfortune of hearing. For all the faults of bias that may be levelled at a lot of commentators, I would take a biased commentator with a clue ahead of him any day. I've lost count of the number of times he speaks just after the ref explained a decision to the teams, and claims that it was for something completely different, that might even have happened elsewhere on the field in spite of the field position of the scrum or penalty!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,178 ✭✭✭Quint2010

    Where is George Hamilton , nugents a tosser and a D4 d1ckhead.

Hamilton had a heart scare a few months back presume thats why he aint around. Personally I find Dempsey a bit dull. Lynagh, Quinlan, Dellaglio and Fitzpatrick are all excellent. As is Quinlan. Vickery is terrible.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 227 ✭✭lovinit

I have to say I am enjoying Hugh Cahill's commentary, we are so used to Ryle Nugent commentating on the 6 nations that I think Hugh takes a while to get used to but I think he is doing a good job, I don't think Ryle Nugent could commit to about 2 months on the southern hemisphere as he is the head of sport on RTE, Darragh Maloney was commentating on a rugby match on the highlights show then he turns up presenting the Premiership which goes to show that you do not even have to be there! But he is more of a soccer commentator than a rugby one!

As far as showing emotion, I think its right that the commentator has to remain neutral as the game is not over until 80 minutes is up as we all know :pac:
