Change Your Country

If tomorrow you were given the right to change any policies, laws currently in affect in this country or introduce a policy or law that is carried out in other countries what would it be.

For example If I had such power I would make a policy to force road works to be carried out a night to free up traffic during the day (this may be done in places like Dublin Im not sure but here in Limerick William street seems to have been under reconstruction for nearly a year and is clogging everything up). I would also get rid of the President or Taoiseach I think there is no point in having both.

    Fathers rights to their children.
Unmarried fathers also do not have any automatic legal rights towards their children.
(They actually in this day and age, have to ask for written permission off the mother for their possible rights - and then have to go to court to have them confirmed - which could take years IF even your on good terms with the mother!)

For over 15+ years Fianna Fail had a number of reports telling them that Irish laws are so far out of date, it was beyond stupidity that they were still so antiquated and crap. They were told off by many in our state and beyond it!
Whats did they do while in their terms of office to change the antiquated laws? NOTHING!
..And even today since then nothing has changed - the laws in this country as regards fathers rights are a complete embarrassing, sad joke!

    For example:
In 1966, the Supreme Court clarified the following aspects of the Irish Constitution:

    (i) a natural or biological father is not a member of a family within Article 41;
(ii) a natural or biological father is not a parent within Article 42; and
(iii) a natural or biological father has no personal right in relation to his child which the State is bound to protect under Article 40.3 (The State (Nicolaou) v an Bord Uchtála).

In 1996, the Constitution Review Group acknowledged that “there has been much criticism of the continued constitutional ostracism of natural fathers” and proposed the following solution: “The Review Group considers that the solution [to giving constitutional rights to natural fathers] appears to lie in following the approach of Article 8 of the ECHR [European Convention on Human Rights] in guaranteeing to every person respect for ‘family life’ which has been interpreted to include non-marital family life but yet requiring the existence of family ties between the mother and the father.

This may be a way of granting constitutional rights to those fathers who have, or had, a stable relationship with the mother prior to birth, or subsequent to birth with the child, while excluding persons from having such rights who are only biological fathers without any such relationship. In the context of the Irish constitution it would have to be made clear that the reference to family life included family life not based on marriage”.

With respect Biggins, The reason for the edit is pretty clear. Choose to believe or not. I reeeeally don't care.

I meant what I meant.

You infer I meant "the lewd forced non consentual act of sexual intercourse" I may have issues but I would NEVER condone that kind of activity.

Your first post had no links and could only be read as it was written.
However, we'll give you the later benefit of the doubt. The jury is still out!
    Moving on...

    Where to start?

    24 hour licensing laws
    Legalise and regulate most drugs
    Seperation of church and state
Abolition of Seanad (Is that not supposed to happen soon?)
Adjust national speed limits on a road by road basis not by it's class.
Change the voting system to a list to stop national votes going to local issues.
Privatise just about everything we can.
More support for those who want to be self employed as the state takes away all safety nets.

    Probably loads more...

I like some of the the laws in the far east ie, disposing of litter and gum on the streets is a serious offence . We could extend it to include graffiti and dog turd on the streets to.

What about fathers rights of Irish men who have children with a woman from a different country over seas and never get to see them?

I'd like to see something done about that.

Health care I'd like to see a set of standards and rules set out which would then be put up for tender to be ran by a private company watched over by a small, AND I MEAN SMALL, state organisation that would take the license from them if they didn't meet requirements.

I think the other emergency services should remain publically financed.

rip up the croke park agreement and all other public pay agreeements.

Cap all td's/ministers salaries at 100,000 for he taoiseach, and scaled down then depedning on position. Politicians should be public servants for their constituents good, not for financial gain.

Sadly, the present watchdog systems we have in this country are just about toothless to say the least (some say a complete joke - I find it hard to disagree).
We would have to start there in major legal work prior-wise, before we could even contemplate what might be the later worthwhile idea.

Well the other point is it is idiotic to keep doing what you are doing and expect different results. No state funded organisation in this country seems to run well. I don't have hopes of our healthcare ever improving while its fully ran by the public sector. I wish it would and I'd love the utopian idea of free healtcare to all provided quickly and efficiently but I have more belief that a company could run our health system with the same state budget better and still make a tidy profit.
Getting into pure hypothetical I'd love the privatised idea above handed a state budget based on reviews from the public. Or perhaps let 2 companies in and they split some of the budget (never enough to create a monopoly) dependant on how many people use one or the other and give the public free choice.

I agree with pretty much everything you say. Maybe not privatising everything though.

    Some of my suggestions.

An opt out rule for organ donation.

Simplify everything, from laws to tax code to social welfare.

Community service instead of fines for littering offences, let culprits clean up an area in their local community.

A major overhaul of our archaic bankruptvy laws.

Suicide prevention and mental health issues to be treated with the seriousness they deserve, as what happened with road deaths.

Major local government reform. There is simply no need for so many seperate local authorities.

    Thats for starters.

lol, theres not a single politician in it for that reason. they should have a cap on their salary though, its utterly ludicrous what the golden inner circle gets paid, and then they have cushy positions and ridiculous pensions to look forward to.

In Ireland you fail upwards then look forward to the people you screw over on the way up to pay for your retirement plans.

I think myself, we need to look at the French and Canadian health care systems.
While not perfect, they are recognised as far a head of our own and are (again) recognised as perhaps the best in the world.
We could - and should have by now if Harney had of been any good for all the years she sat on her ass in office - learn a quite a few things and put them into practice, this side of the water.

put a 50c tax on all things recyclable, plastics, cardboard, etc . The 50c is returned when you bring your item to your local centre. Done (was done) to a certain extent in switzerland. Great idea for saving on land fills, and bin charges. and costs nothing to nobody.

I'd bring in hard labour for all offences against property, and generally offences not involving assault.

Non-fatal offences against the person would have a minimum 5year sentence.

Underage offenders and anti social behaviour would be sent to Military school. I'd set up military schools and discipline would be enforced along military terms. No questions asked.

I'd remove closing time in town/city centre pubs. Publicans/ managers would self regulate. There is no sense in a nightclub having to close at 3am, none. for suburban licensed where they may be in proximity to dwelling houses a dispensation would have to be sought whereby the hours kept would not impinge on neighbours. Failure to comply would see the licence revoked.

I would allow any car be retroactively taxed to the new bands if the emissions were in line with the 2008 regulation. I would charge €300 for the privilege and the car would have to carry a specially coloured tax disc to indicate it was compliant there after.

I would see to an immediate separation of Church and state.

I'd change the dole thing. I'd pay out a certain amount for 3 months. In this time the person has to show that they have somehow searched for work and had at least 3 replies from companies etc. They can choose to blow all the money in a week or over the 3 months. I wouldn't give them anymore. If they haven't done anything about searching for work over a big period of time, I'd make them do ****ty jobs like sweeping and cleaning their community. Basically make them my slaves.
