    Dyatlov Pass Incident

Creeps me right out! I find the D.B. Cooper (sic) thing quite unsettling too.

I've been reading a bit about cattle mutilations recently. A weird phenomenon. What is behind it? Is it a number of different causes or mainly one? What is that cause? Is the occurrence of and circumstances surrounding the cases exaggerated for maximum effect (almost definitely).

There's various hypothesis surrounding what could be behind it with the most popular one being extraterrestrials. To me, the idea that any kind of being advanced enough to travel the untold distances to earth and when they get there, tear up a cow (at night usually because......there's less chance of them being arrested for this act of vandalism/wanton cruelty?) is completely ridiculous in my opinion.

Other ideas about what the cause or causes can of course be found here :

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cattle_mutilation

The idea that there may be satanic cults behind it, even if they are just a bunch of mixed up or misguided kids with too much time on their hands is pretty weird. The idea of a bunch of people hanging around a deserted area at night in black hooded robes, looking menacing, gives me the creeps. (I blame scobies for the way I feel. ;))

Love the unexplained mysteries, all types.

But this one is great, the book is still wide open. Crazy that despite such a massive search there still wasn't any trace of him. If he survived, and managed to keep the money he's a legend!

Cattle mutilation is not really something that people question or blame ET for anymore.

Great story that, but that's all it seems to be? I can't find it referenced anywhere except a fleeting few conspiracy theory sites?

I just came accross it myself today.

I might have a look around later for more info.

Does anyone know anything about the story about the u.s.air force insignia wings that were found in the desert somewhere and carbon dated to ten thousand years old. Heard this years ago but don't know anything else about it.

Ive read about this too and it has intrigued me..

One of the things that has puzzled me is that there is an argument as to whether it is actually her in the photograph.. i mean surely the photo is clear enough for people to agree on that its her or not!!!

Nonetheless its a very chilling photograph and also an intriguing case!

Might that not indicate there is something wrong about carbon dating?:(

I've always found the disappearance of the Waratah off the coast of South Africa intriguing.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Waratah

Another maritime, and topical mystery. I often wondered if the Californian was the actual ship witnessed by the Titanic, when she was sinking.

    que?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭FishHook

When the Titanic was sinking there was a ship in the distance, observed by survivors, that did not come to the Titanic's aid. It was always accepted to be the tramp steamer, Californian, (you might know of it, if you saw the Titanic film 'A Night To Remember') which was estimated have been about ten miles from the Titanic's CQD/SOS position. The crew of the Californian, did claim to see rockets in the night, almost certainly the Titanic's distress rockets.

However, when the wreck of the Titanic was discovered in 1985, it was located approximately ten miles further south, than the CQD/SOS position they gave in 1912. This pushes the Californian up to twenty miles away from the Titanic, and over the horizon. In the Board of Trade enquiry into the sinking, Titanic survivors claim to have seen a ship much closer than this, during the sinking. Crew even tried to contact it with a morse lamp, without success.

It is also worth noting that the 'mystery' ship's red and green side lamps could also be seen.

Great thread, hope I'm not bumping this.

I've always found unexplained vanishings interesting. The list below is worth reading:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unexplained_disappearances

I suppose first assumption for unexplained disappearances is usually murder but you just have to think that there could be some other reason behind a disappearance. I wonder do a lot of people intentionally "disappear" and start new lives somewhere?

I've also always been intrigued by the Kola Superdeep Borehole started by the Soviet Union in Siberia. What exactly was the point of this? A hoax went around that the workers on the site began to hear strange noises coming from the borehole (see link below). Think there are some eerie recordings on YouTube as well.

yeah it is more than likely not true. I was told it years ago by someone who believed it himself. I've Googled it many times myself and found nothing, i thought someone here may have heard something. Obviously not. If i ever find anything, I'll be back.

+1. Not much to go on with the Man from Taured mystery either e.g no first hand accounts etc. Urban myth more than likely.

The largest impact event in recorded history, & not a scrap of evidence or crater indicating what it was. I love it :) Your probably right & the meteor exploded in mid air, but we'll never know...it was 1000 times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima whatever it was

Yes that was a theory alright. Even Queen Victoria's nephew was put in the frame, but we'll probably never know for sure.

Strange that it hit one of the remotest places on earth, one hundred miles either way and it would have wiped out thousands of people,I read in a book that some witnesses said that they saw the object in the air and it changed course,a meteorite wouldn't do that. It's a great mystery though.

They don't. But those that do, I imagine it's due to the engrained mental associations with such hooded figures. (Death etc...)
