I've had my first android phone a week now (s2).... And id like to go down the root road.

Can someone point me in the right direction to the steps I need to take to go about rooting? I'm new to all this android stuff so some help from anyone would be great.

    Thanks

Rooting is not much use to you. What you want to do is install a custom rom, these usually come with root anyway.

Do you not have to root first in order to install a custom ROM?

Yeh you do and rooting as a first step opens up access to more applications that require root too so its a good first step without changing your whole ROM.

Once rooted you can then install custom ROMs.

Nope. Rooting is nothing to do with installing a custom rom. You need to unlock the bootloader, which is not the same as rooting. People use the term "rooting" incorrectly to refer to both processes for some reason (maybe because on some devices you do both at same time).

Your SGS2 doesn't have a locked bootloader anyway, so it's very easy to install a rom. You just put the phone into "download mode" then run Odin. Full instructions on the xda-developers link above. No rooting needed beforehand (you will get root after with the custom rom as mentioned).

Slightly confused over these two posts?

I understand that you can root then flash a ROM.

Yes you can root and flash. You can also just flash. Skip the unnecessary step.

People are confused because some other devices need to have bootloader unlocked first. SGS2 does not need this step.

    Basic how to:
Make sure you got usb drivers installed on pc (this is the only awkward step tbh)
    Put phone into download mode.
    Run odin, flash rom.

edit: Don't use the link above, that's just a stock rom with rooted kernel. Does not really give you any new shiny stuff.
    Try this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1198334
Note I have not tested that linked rom myself, I'm using litening rom (not latest).

moar edit: Just to cover my ass here.... I put custom roms on my own sgs2, and several others (vodafone + meteor). No rooting was needed. Depending on the supplier however the device might come with a locked boot loader or whatever, I haven't encountered this tho.

even moar edit: Just to confuse you even more, the guys above told you to flash a stock rom that has been hacked to have root. This is just the same as flashing any rom :D

Not all roms are flashed through ODIN though and AFAIK you need root access to change the recovery image (open to correction on that)

    CONFUSION FOR ALL!!! :pac:

Root has absolutely nothing to do with low level protection. You can even have a rooted phone that can't write to system partition because of hardware protection.

OP, sorry for confusing you. Just pick a custom rom, and follow the instructions on xda-developers. Post back here if you run into any probs. Also see the MEGATHREAD on "modding galaxy 2": http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056315512

SGS2 is one of the easiest devices to mod, there is no hacking involved as it's not locked down. HTC Desire and other phones are more annoying to do.
