Its obviously depending on your situation and the type of job I guess. But what is the minimum amount a year you would work for?

I would work for peanuts just to have a job again.

Seriously, I really don't care what I get paid. ANYTHING is better than the dole.

20k take home pay. Couldn't live on anything less. That's bread and water money right there, no hols, nothing. My old job, I wouldn't do it for less than 27k take home if I was still at it.

25,000, but I would have to love the job and have excellent terms and conditions, no stress etc.

except if its less than the dole?

1800-2000 a month is fine, enough to live, pay bills, food, petrol, other stuff, head out twice a month or so, lived on a lot less and got by, 800 a month on sick pay for a good while.

really sick of this working to live sh1t though.

relative of a friend turned down a 50k a year job even though she hated her 70k a year one as "she just couldnt live on that little" **** sake, I'd live plenty good on that

I was volunteering for nearly a year as a techie and trainer up until a few weeks ago.

I'd like a job that pays this time round.

All joking aside, I do feel for people in your position.

I was on the dole in the 80's.. I've seen us go from those times to boom to bust and it tears the heart out of me to see people que for for the social again.. And no bullsh*t when I do see it I think of posts like yours and the people behind the nameless faces.

I hope things pick up for you.

nope, lived on sub 800 a month myself, rent was 350 at the time, left 450 a month to pay bills and live on, and I only had myself to worry about. sucks for people who have kids and mortgages and the like.

Living in Galway at the moment. Finding techie work is a pain when the few vacancies out there require people to know ancient Hebrew and have worked 600+ years in a similiar techie role :pac:

If no job crops up in the next 2 weeks I'm back doing Fás courses to fill up my time and plonk more stuff on the CV.

He only gets them through nepotism, being the son of God & all that.

I think working as a techie in a disabled organisation who covered 60+ respite centres, group homes and special needs schools around the county pretty much covered it. Volunteering as a trainer in a radio station teaching disabled people to host their own shows probably covered that area too.

Then offering my help as an IT trainer in a St. Vincent De Paul center was another to boost things along.

Get down off your high horse with your attitude, you don't know my situation at all.

its a private job, managerial position. If it was me I'd take a lower paying job that made me happier than a higher paying one that was making me lose the will to live, at the mo I have a low paid job thats edging me one step closer to winding up on the news after going on a rampage murdering hookers with a spoon.

sorry no wasnt a high horse, you said 'techie' job and nothing else, I dont do the mind reading stuff unfortunately :(
fall play for doing what you have said, and thats the EXACT thing I meant, but you have done it...maybe another cause now? :)

Then maybe she has a high mortage and other financial commitments she can't talk to you about.

I'd love to transfer to the armies medical corp. I think I'd love the job but I'd be taking a serious pay cat that I just can not afford.

I think what Duggy is saying is that he's already given substantial time to various charities and is now understandably wanting to focus on bettering his own life

€17,500 take home. That gives you €350 a week to play with. Could live on that fairly easily.

I worked for 3 years as an IT tech for 12k take home. Didn't mind as I was living at home and was learning new stuff all the time.

Min wage is not enough to get people off the dole TBH. When you account for all the costs involved in keeping a job it works out as pretty much the same maybe <50e extra.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 26 liam198

Wouldnt be to fussy... would work for peanuts just so i could keep sane!
At a job at the moment and don't even know what my wage is!! It seems to change everyweek and not in a good sense:(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 569 ✭✭✭CoolHat

I honestly dont know how people survive on the minimum 330-350 a week.
Rent is mental expensive. Bills all add up. Then there is food. I dont know how people do it.

Then theres people with the exact same stuff to fork out and they're on the social  The cost of living is mental in this country.

I do it myself at the min on less then that...but that's only because i live at home!! Honestly don't think i could do it and fair play to all that do especially who have families!! Think i'll stay wit mammy for another while:cool:

    I know what you mean.
I am on the social right now but I am living at home. I cant even begin to think how people handle it.

My dad is right what he says "time to go out collecting jam jars" (oh and for anyone that doesnt get that :P It pretty much means go out and make some money. Like if you have a van advertise a vanman service. If you got a car do takeaway delieveries, if you're a handyman do nixers etc etc)

Currently taking home less than 20k a year in a job I fecking well hate. Working the night shift nearly all week, every week. I couldn't afford a drop.

My husband is on a decent wage, but is so unhappy. It's sucking the life out of him. I mean that seriously. If he can get a job for a similar wage to mine he's out of where he is now. Any other type of job would be preferable to where he's stuck atm. Nothing is worth your health. I often wonder if we'd be better off if the mortgage company just took the house and we could get on with our lives.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,115 ✭✭✭Pdfile

anything less then 34k won't cut it due to commitments ( no mortgage thank god ) Sounds alot more then it is but thats me living somewhat comfortably.

For the last year, I worked in a retail job where my average monthly wage was €800. Worked there for 11 months and between the irregular hours of retail and being so miserable in the job, there were a few times that I thought that it would be better to be on the dole.

I really learned how to stretch every euro but still there would be months that I would be living on beans, toast and pasta to be able to pay my rent and bills. I didn't go clothes shopping for most of the year, and there was nothing more depressing than showing up at my family's house at Christmas barely able to afford to buy anyone Christmas presents.

In a happy ending, I emigrated in August and now I'm earning twice that every month in a much better job.

If I cut down to the basics I could easily survive on 1k a month, get by on about 900 and struggle on 800.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭Sky King

I had a job with Irish Rail this one time. I wouldn't do that again for 100k a year take home. Fact.

I would happily work in forestry or on a tillage farm for minimum wage for a year though, provided i was my own boss.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,014 ✭✭✭Monife

20k take home. Currently living on that and with rent, bills, food, have a little bit left to live comfortably and can afford to go out maybe once a month.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,283 ✭✭✭Deedsie

€9777, €1 more than the dole.

I'm not on the dole thankfully, but I'd work anywhere to avoid going down that road!

  • Posts: 0 CMod ✭✭✭✭ Addilynn Flabby Dice

i started off below min wage, i think it was about 6 something or 7 something. that was liveable. But of course once your wage goes up you easily find things to spend it on, and make commitments, etc. I am doing a number of courses now which mean my current wage is just about enough to cover them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,420 ✭✭✭Lollipops23

I could get by on €18k. I was on €16-€17k this time last year and I really struggled. Am on a good bit more now (nothing major) and am comfy (and extremely grateful).
I hope the posters who are saying they could never get by on less than €27-€30k have mortgages/kids etc. Otherwise that be crazy talk.
