You currently have a Vitz (yaris) on 18" wheels? :pac:

lol yea its 1.5 tsport though and they really suit it :pac:

Its all to do with a lovely techy term called "Rotational Inertia"

Basically, The lighter the wheel, the lower the rotational inertia, the faster the acceleration;)

Hi OP... I would love to see picts of your car....

By the way your speedo may read differently when you change the overall rolling diameter of the wheel/tyres.

Have a look at this site for conversations etc.. it's an oldie but a good one:

    http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Don't know what the 0-60 will be like... you'll have to factor unsprung weight differences also...

Let me get this straight - you drive a 1.5 Yaris and you are wondering if getting smaller wheels will give you a faster 0 to 60 ???

Better idea - install small sail on roof and do your 0-60 with the prevailing winds

heres a picture an its not same as a 1.0 yaris its a sports car 0 to 60 in 8.6 seconds

No... it's a yaris not a sports car... it might be a fast yaris but LOL at calling it a sports car

so its the same speed as a turbo glanza and its not a sports car ?
also the big red TSPORT symbol indicates sports car

By that definition, a Range Rover Sport is also a sports car :pac:

No, because a glanza is also not a sports car. My diesel does 0-60 in 8.5 so....

I have to say, that pic doesn't make the car look as ridiculous as I was expecting. Jaysus I had 18s on a Lexus IS200 and they were too big for it, I can only imagine how horrible that Yaris must be to drive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,722 ✭✭✭Thud

Maybe he uses it for driving to "sports" i.e. a "sports" car...:D

A glanza is not a sports car, and neither is a Yaris. It doesn't even qualify as a hot hatch.

And the sport badge just means they fitted a skirt, and some different wheels.

no brake discs all round, different exhaust system, completely different engine, different clocks plus much more

Don't mind the guys on here.

Those TSport badges are good for 20bhp-30bhp over the Yaris without the badges.

    A bit like a tractor I guess.

As for a sports car op. No way dude but its a small nippy car.

here guys for those of you who obviously dont have a clue about the car have a read of this http://safetechtoyota.blogspot.com/2011/03/toyota-yaris-t-sport-2001.html mins standard at the moment but im planing to put some cash into it to get a 0 to 60 of 6 seconds if possible

Hey OP... I have to say I like that car! I wouldn't have guessed that 18" would have fit.. but there you go.

You'll probably notice a much less harsh ride with smaller diameter etc.

Best of luck with your new wheels.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 539 ✭✭✭Live4Ever

I don't know anything about the physics but I think the wheels look good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,906 ✭✭✭BronsonTB

OP...This is an argument I don't think you will win no matter how much you try...People's perception of your car is not one of a 'typical' sports car.
But if you enjoy it then don't mind anyone else.....

Back on topic...I'd imagine the feel with 15' would be improved from the 18' as tyres should have a higher profile. Not sdure about improving speed tho.

If you put smaller alloys onto it, be prepared for a possibly more wallowy ride. Fuel consumption should increase also.

lol very funny but without knowing it you make some sense for example the 1.0 yaris is 67bhp and mine the one with the tsport badge is 115bhp
also the corolla without the badge is 97bhp where as the one with the badge is 197bhp so you may have slightly underestimated the exact bhp of the badge but thank you for your input

Thanks most people that see it like it lol, ya I must say its an awful harsh ride because it lowered and on hardned cobra springs too so a lot of roar from the tyres

really I always thought I was burning more fuel with the larger alloys, this thing is an absolute miser anyways

0-60 is quoted as 8.7 on your car and tops out at 118

Also your mates Glanza is most likely a worn out sh1tbox

parkers says they are 103bhp. not a major difference do :D

car looks very well on the 18s. 16s would be the best bet imo. they will fill the arches and have enough wall on them to be comfortable on rough roads.

also good tyres will make a lot of differance in your 0-60 time. a set of sunny or some other crap chinese tyres wont get anywhere near the same grip as a set of michelin pilot sports for example..

also factory 0-60 times are done under differente conditions than you would be using the car for every day. not many everyday drivers would be able to get near them times..

Am I the only one thinking that fuel consumption will increase with smaller wheels?

Sure you'll have less rotational mass, but the smaller circumference will require more rotations for the same rolling distance, hence engine revolutions are higher and thus more fuel is used. No?

I would agree with you kinda. Remember during acceleration the engine will be under more load because of the massive alloys therefore he would be wasting petrol there but as soon as he is driving along nicely with little or no load he will be doing better on the fuel than being on the smaller alloys.

Only if the rolling circumference is smaller = higher revs at same speed.

My Toledo has 195/65/15 on at present
The plan in to put either
    225/45/17
    or
    235/40/18 on it
It would equal the same final drive
but, it would put more load on it thus soaking up the power on pickup which will most likely burn more fuel

Im really interesting in knowing how he is going to get an 8.6sec 0-60 car down to 6sec.. considering his first step is to change the wheels.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,090 ✭✭✭markc1184

I think your 6sec target is unrealistic unless your willing to pump plenty of money into it. If you could shave .5 -.8sec off you mould be doing well IMO. Good luck with that though.

found few like this on youtube show top speed is 125.9 mph

id say thats not too far off 0 to 60 in 6 secs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

Eerm, you can't even clearly see the numbers? It could be anything! certainly wouldn't say it's near 6s though.

Honestly, you're probably looking at pumping thousands into the car to try lose 1 second, nevermind 2.5s

And I know one thing for sure, I certainly wouldn't feel one bit safe in a yaris doing 120mph.
