Classic channels we got  but i'm sure we were told 5 new channels?? NO??

Food channel is grand always makes me hungry though :D but true movies is quite a sick station, every movie is either about rape or incest, very wierd indeed.

Sure, it's UPC why would what the customer wants come in the equation?

Some Free to Air channels UPC don't currently carry that I'm sure could be easily added to there line-up.......

I tweeted their "weareupc" twitter account months ago then the other day again, they reply with " there are a number of options we are looking at so watch this space"

They don't care about TV anymore, there won't be any new channels, that's just nonsense to keep you following their twitter feed.

If Channel 5 could be "easily added" to their line up, they would have added it back in 1997. They can't just add channels, they need to negotiate a carriage deal. What the problem with having the UKTV channels they don't already have is I don't know, they obviously can work with UKTV given the channels they do have so it is possibly just a matter of price. I miss the non-comedy programmes that used to be on UKTV Gold and have moved to Watch.

    Still waiting!!!

Have you not heard the "great news" - UPC have launched Oireachtas TV on 801 from today.

Obviously one of the replacements for ITV.......

Wonder will there be the annual price increase from Jan 1.......carriage costs for free to air Food Network & True Movies are high.....

Surely this should have been added to the 200's, say 224 instead of the 800's.......

Also I wonder if they will added RTE2 HD and RTE News Now?

I wouldn't mind having that channel via DTT. But the email I got back from those running the channel suggests they expect to be carried for free. Some joke.

I left UPC about a year ago. The weekend before last I had a call from a Marketing Company on behalf of UPC enquiring if I would consider going back to UPC if they added certain channels to their package. I was asked to give an answer between 1 and 10 (1 - not interested, 10 - very interested) for channels such as Channel 4 HD, ITV HD (1,2,3 &4) channels, Sky Sports HD channels, Channel 5, CBS channels, Sky Atlantic, Eden – and many more that I can't recall just now. Also, wanted to know if I would be tempted by a UPC service similar to Sky Go. I don't know the likelihood of these channels being added to the UPC package but it looks like it's something they're working on.

This is more a marketing ploy imho. I know of situations in the past where viewers dropped UPC eg because Eurosport was dropped from analogue (and informed UPC of the reason) , and then (many) years later when Eurosport was added back to the digital line up they received a call inviting them back to UPC.
If eg you said Ch4HD was a must, if its ever added to UPC expect a phone call !
(an aside - did UPC not get their hands slapped last year for their aggresive marketing and unprompted phone calls)

They were on the EPG trust me this morning.

Just noticed this morning that MGM HD is gone from the EPG, I'm in D24. So much for the new channels.

@Badabing what number? I can't see them in the 100s.

When i turned on the telly this morning ITV 2 3 4 where on the EPG but where blank or had ads on them, Sky Arts2 was on on 142. There gone now tho

Was on the phone to them a few days ago about the disappearence of setanta hd (its been replaced with setanta SD) and the woman told me their adding standard and high def channels in january.

As upc's policy is to lie and treat their customers like idiots i'll believe it when i see it.

I have given up waiting for replacements to ITV 2, 3, & 4. I signed up with Sky yesterday and cancelled my UPC TV service.

I suppose I will be on the Sky forum shortly complaining about Sky.

That would explain why the channel count is up today (and yes I know I am simplifying the meaning of the count but its up 7 from yesterday)

This time of the year a price increase announcement would be expected - so new quality channels would be a welcome deflection

What about all those non channels in 700's such as FilmFour +1?
    They have never been explained.
My guess was that possibly they wanted to introduce a HD EPG and a SD EPG like skys, but are waiting to see what happens to Irelands economy and the Eurozone in general.

they may decide to invest no more until things are more clear?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,574 ✭✭✭dharn

is it possible to supply hd chanells over mmds or does anyone know if upc intend to provide hd for people not on cable

They were left on the EPG so people could still have access to recordings they had under those channel ID's. If a channel was removed or the name changed you couldn't watch recordings on the DVR boxes.

If you look closely at the channels in the 700's that are still available on the normal numbers, you'll notice slight differences in the spelling/spacing of the channel names. Don't ask me about National Geographic I can't spot any change but it's up there for some reason.

Hi the tax man there are many channels there that still exist.

The ITV's and others are still there so people can watch shows they recorded after the channels left the EPG or changed name.

I did notice diffrient spelling for channels that still exist and i would still go with the idea that it may have been a beginning to an SD&HD EPG that is now on hold on account of the fact the parent company are in the Eurozone also.
Who knows may'be ALL channels might leave the EPG............... any day now!:)

The big holes in that theory are:
    (a) HD channels don't appear on the SD EPG. At all.
    (b) None of the blank channels in the 700s actually have a HD variant on UPC.

The reason for the different SD and HD EPGs on Sky is purely to get Sky's own HD channels at the top of the relevant sections of the EPG. This is so viewers see them before the SD variants, which are further down. This incentive doesn't exist for UPC.

Anyway, if the ITVs come back, it would be very good news. Given UPC's statement that ITV would not allow them carriage at any price before, my instinct was that TV3 had more than a hand in their departure, but maybe TV3 have learnt not to bite the hand that feeds them.

Ziggyman17 do you have a link for that?(that can often sound aggressive,i do not mean it that way)

It would be a fascinating change if it happens.
i imagine it would lead to a price increase as well as the increase in VAT will do.:(

Well it was only a theory, what is the best guess for channels that have not closed down or changed names being there:confused:,it is a bit of a headscratcing.

i am not sure who you mean by the hand that feeds TV3 ICDG ?

A friend of mine works for UPC.. He's very high up in the company.. He told me all the legal issue's with TV3 stopping Upc from having the ITV'S have been sorted out.. Its with the legal department now and upc will have the ITV'S and sky arts 2 either december or january...

There are 20 channels in question from 778 to 798. 7 of them are gone from the normal EPG, 1 is a seasonal channel so it comes and goes and 11 have changed names or the spelling is slightly different to the channel that STILL exists on the EPG.

That's 19 out of 20 channels explained. I already said I don't know why National Geographic is there but it's there for a reason.

Why do I need to be repeating this?

I mean that TV3 shouldn't be so hasty to annoy (and in particular, to take the legal route against) their biggest supplier of programming. ITV plc might one day decide that TV3 are more hastle than they are worth and that they would make more money out of the Irish market (and have less legal hastle) offering opt out advertising on their own channels. Remember ITV plc no longer have a stake in TV3.

Exactly - without ITV programming TV3 schedule becomes fairly empty. They have also upset Sky - annoy Sky too much and EPG positions can get changed - why is 3e on 105 ?! ....and Skys future is with ITV re the subscription HD channels.

I would imagine UTV are also making noises as advertising is drying up and at the end of the day they are part of the ITV family.

And if UPC wanted to they move from 3e to the 800's - a lot of negativity publicity for UPC this year thanks to TV3........as they say what goes around...

    Yes, that's what I said.

indeed you did, when responding i repeated some of what you said by mistake.

Please tell me what channels are you referring to with that statement.

    Sky Premier 790
    its plus 1 789
    BBC 4 791
    BBC 3 792
    CNBC 794
    Film 4 +1 795
    E4+1 798
    Atheraces 798.

Slightly different ID's but the channels never left or changed names.
    why?

Eg if you recorded a program from BBC3 - that would no longer play as 'BBC3' now displays as 'BBC Three'.

To allow subscibers to view these recording a 'dummy' channel BBC3 exists on the EPG

Surely there is a better way than that?.it is so messy.
i am not trying to stir anybody up here,it is more that the UPC EPG is already such a wreck.:(

also CNBC never changed name for one AFAIK?

    CNBC Europe is the change.

Is there a better way - No is the answer regards UPC, 700s is the best place to put these channels.
Don't think it bothers anybody -more the line up in eg Entertainment is a mess and annoys viewers (and the way you access the radio channels on the newer boxes)
    Sky EPG is worse btw

Lets hope ALL the channels do not change their names,it would take up all of the 700's!:)

If the ITV's do come back i guess they will fill in the gaps on the low 100's(might explain why the +1's were never restored from the 150's)

it shows the level of trust that exists about UPC that we all only believe it when we see it though.

and BTW how is City Channel STILL there?

Scratch that i should not even ask, for UPC works in weird ways!:)

That one is puzzling me. City Channel Limited is in liquidation so I don't know who or what is keeping the channel in operation. Unless the liquidator feels that playing out the remaining programming will give more money to repay the creditors than a sudden closure.

The liquidator is probably trying to sell the channel as a going concern or has calculated that it is better (cash wise) to keep the channel on air. afaik if it would cost more to keep the channel on air then the liquidator would have to cease operations immediately.

As an aside apparently the 'info' channel playout equipment is situated in City Channels premises

A tweet from UPC this evening when asked if the ITV's where returning:

Query : "ITV is coming back I hear?,any truth in it?"

UPC reply : "Any new channel(s) can only be communicated when contracts have been signed by both sides. Otherwise it is speculative.Suffice to say,we'll let you know as soon as we can when we will be making changes to our line up"

Make what you may of that reply - not the standard response...
