    2nd Trailer

Neeson seems to be Hollywood's new action star

Here's a trailer for this. Could be a decent man vs wild movie. It looks like he's about to punch a wolf at the end of it, now who doesn't want to see that?

Its directed by Joe Carnahan that made THe A-Team, Narc and Smokin' Aces. I enjoyed A-Team and Narc not seen the other, will probably see this over the christmas.

Another Neeson paycheck film. I expect the last 30 minutes will be just be him all alone fighting a bunch of CGI wolves. Ah what the hell, Taken and Unknown were entertaining.

Hope to Jaysus it's the crowd from Twilight. Liam'd batter them.

I really excited for this... especially the bit where he goes "wolverine" with the bottles taped to his knuckles! :)

The courageous story of a wolf pack trying to survive Liam Neeson

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 504 ✭✭✭SVG

I'm really looking forward to this!

Apparently the ads are mis-selling it a bit as it's more of a survival story than a Liam Neeson punches wolves story (tbh I'd be happy with either version:)). What really got me interested though is that Neeson has said it's in the top 3 roles of his career- he put it below Michael Collins but above Schindler's List:eek:.

Bradley Cooper was originally supposed to play the lead- can you imagine all the lazy wolf-pack headlines?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,295 ✭✭✭✭Duggy747

I'd be happy if it was just 2 hours of Neeson having a scrap with wolves.

Turns out the wolves are more human than the humans.

And we all learn a valuable lesson about something or other.

He's a Jedi, Zeus, leader of the A-Team, trained Batman, murdered anyone who looked sideways at his daughter, saved a few thousand jews, is a god of Narnia and has aquired many skills.

    go wrong?

Heh heh heh. Most of those films were pretty awful though, besides Batman and Schindler's List (though I was more talking about his post-2000 career).

Punching a wolf... could be good..

The question on everybodies mind i know is, will it be better than Arnie punching a camel???

I think with Neeson's career in recent years it started as him taking any role offered him in the months after his wife's death in order to keep busy. He seemed to enjoy doing them and has continued to take roles where he gets to have a little fun and kick some serious ass.

Me too. My only concern is that one or two glimpses of the wolves in the trailer look overly CGI... almost like the wolf in 300. Small niggle I suppose. I have the feeling that this may not be as action-packed as some are anticipating, but I'm looking forward to it.

Wolves can't really be trained, so I'd imagine there's going to be a lot of CGI and animatronics in the film.

    Wolves can't really be trained
    Do please elaborate?
I'd imagine there's going to be a lot of CGI and animatronics in the film.
My point was badly made. I have no problem with well-implemented CGI per sé, but one or two shots in the trailer reminded me of the tacky-looking wolf in 300.

I wasn't disputing what you said. I was just saying that there's likely to be a lot of fake wolves in the film. You can't train a wolf the way you would a dog. It would be a nightmare trying to film them. And I doubt they'd be allowed anywhere near the actors. I'm sure there's probably some real wolf footage in the film, but probably very little.

Saw it tonight and it was excellent. Has a lot more depth than you would expect from the trailer and not nearly as much CGI. Return to form for Carnahan.

Saw this yesterday and thought it was awful. Nice scenery and the wolf scenes are good but other than that the acting is atrocious and as for the script? Parts of it really made me cringe and I was tempted to leave early I was so bored - but stuck it out to the end.

Saw this today, really enjoyed it. Not a stretch for Neeson character wise, but he was class as usual. Having said that I went with 3 other people and none of them enjoyed it.

Nothing like watching a film with an American audience
There was literally uproar at the end of the movie, personally I thought it was well handled but the entire movie eludes to a showdown we never actually see

I think there's an extra bit at the end I heard

I went to see this on Saturday night and I was pleasently surprised. I was expecting a movie along the line of the Alec Baldwin, Anthony Hopkins one "The Edge" where the guys are stalked by a grissly in the wilds. This was slightly different but equally entertaining.

Is it true that the director had 4 wolves killed for the making of the film or something? I read there are people trying the boycott it or something because of it.

In before the "Down with this sort of thing" "Careful Now" comments.

apparently the cast ate wolf meat during filming or something. Most of the uproar appears to be about the unrealistic portrayal of wolves in the film. They don't generally hunt people in reality.

The whole "they killed a wolf" and "wolfs don't really hunt people" so lets protest the film is beyond ridiculous. I noticed though that they none of the people complaining protested over Alpha and Omega which had talking wolves which to me is a far more unrealistic portrayal of wolves.

Well, this was a very pleasant surprise. I was expecting Taken-with-wolves, but it's not. In fact, the trailer lies! This isn't even an action film, and anyone who goes in expecting an action film is going to be mighty pissed off by the ending. I'm usually the kind of person who leaps up at the end of a movie and runs out the exit. But with this film I just sat staring at the screen in bewilderment for about a minute before starting to quietly giggle in disbelief at how Carnahan decided to end it.

This is not a man-versus-wolf film, it's a man-versus-nature/survival thriller with existential undertones. It's the kind of film that would have been considered mainstream in the '70s. I do have some nitpicks with the dodgy CGI and sound design, but over all I really enjoyed it.

Contender for my favourite movie quote of the year:

"F**k it, I'll do it myself!"

I think the protests are silly, it'll blow over pretty quick. Having said that, talking wolves, though unrealistic, are not going to encourage people to go shooting wolves (although arguably it depends on what they're saying :D) where as portraying them as man eaters might(probably won't though) and can make life difficult for those trying to educate people on why they should be protected. So the comparison with Alpha & Omega doesn't really hold up.

Going to see this tonight, really looking forward to it after the reactions some people on here have been having :)

I wonder if the people who are protesting the film have actually seen it. I thought the wolves were presented in a very elemental way, not as animals but as forces of nature. I never once felt that Carnahan was trying to suggest that this is what wolves are really like. Unlike Jaws, which really is about a shark eating people, Carnahan is just using the wolves as a metaphor for death.

They protested the opening night and were up in arms over it well before it was screened for anyone. Another case of idiots jumping the gun.

Just back from it and thats pretty much what I took from it too.

Thought it was brilliant and I was absolutley delighted with how it steered away from cliches and predictability. There was a lot more depth than I was expecting too. It was a very refreshing take on the man vs. wild movie and I loved how dark it was, plus the ending was great. I'm going to try and get as many people as I can to go and see this just to hear them grumble about the ending :P

Anyone else think the score sounded awfully like the one from Sunshine?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 22,693 CMod ✭✭✭✭Sad Professor

Yeah, the track used in the final scene is left over temp track taken from the score of another film called Ink, which itself was a "clone track" of Adagio in D Minor from John Murphy's Sunshine soundtrack. I'm sure the rest of the score was probably modelled on that as well.

Film soundtracks are so heavily derivative now days that you can pretty much guess what the temp track was by listening to the final score. Like I just know Steve McQueen used Hans Zimmer's Journey to Line in the temp track of Shame because the final score used in the film sounds just like it.

I'm only after finding out there was a clip after the credits, had to track it down on youtube.....not sure what to make of it I think
he may have won the fight, killed the alpha at least
. Could have been shoe-horned in by the studio.

Just watched the trailer there again, its very misleading
some of the footage is not even in the final cut
    .

The trailer was very misleading alright. It's a classic case of the studio getting a film that they didn't how to sell and deciding to do whatever they had to to get bums on seats. The film is positively Bergmanesque in its themes, which is the very last thing I expected. I admire Carnahan for slipping this stuff into what is basically a mainstream survival thriller and that he had the balls to end it in such a way as to emphasis those themes.

its funny how at the beginning of this thread people thought it was going to be a silly film about men fighting wolves, and by the time the movie came out its a lot more than that, and really good to boot, but the misleading trailers meants people who actually expected it to be stupid are finding it dull once it turns out to be a decent movie.
