    Hey there!!

So from starting today Mango is starting to be pushed out accross all network across the whole world.

This doesnt meant that you will get it instantly. The notification will probably pop up within the week as they gradually roll it out.

Some people are updating as i write this :)

    __________________________________________

Certain handsets are emitted. But it doesnt look like there is any in Ireland :)

Either way heres the schedule :)

    _________________________________________

Any one on Mango Beta should also get a notification get a clean up update to put them back on track onto an official update track. That means you wont have to revert back to NoDo.

It will also work for the unofficial beta's :)

    ________________________________________

Whats new in Windows Phone 7.5 or aka Mango

    Threads

Got lots to say? Start with a text and finish in Facebook or Messenger chat (or vice versa). With Threads, you can switch instantly between texting and IM within a single conversation. You can also send a text with just your voice – totally hands-free – or text and chat with multiple contacts in a single thread.

    Groups

Groups help you focus on the contacts that matter. Organise your favourite people into groups – family, friends from the local area, football parents. Then you can email, text or chat with a whole group at once. Pin a group to Start and you’ll see missed calls, new messages and social networking updates from the group members.

    Email featuring Outlook Mobile

Stay on top of that torrent of email — with Outlook Mobile, you can view only unread, urgent or flagged messages, or use conversation view to group messages by subject. If you’ve got lots of accounts, you can create linked inboxes to streamline things – like one for personal mail and one for work (the accounts stay separate). Then pin them to Start to keep tabs on the incoming mail.

    Peoples Hub

Only Windows Phone has a People Hub with one-touch access to Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, so you’ll always be in the loop. Skim the latest posts and pictures from your friends. Dial, text or IM your contacts, one at a time or in groups. Or use the Me card to post your status, see who’s writing on your Wall or change your profile pictures, right from your phone.

    Picture Hub + Camera

Press the camera button to quickly take photos, even when your phone is locked. Then you can share, tweet, text or email it, all from one place. You can even tag a picture as you upload it to Facebook – your phone detects the faces automatically. The Pictures Hub houses your entire collection — including online albums — and even shows a feed of your friends’ latest pics.

    Application Connect

Application Connect serves up the application you need – sometimes before you even know you need it. Looking for film times? Search with Bing and alongside the usual web results you might see applications to buy tickets or read reviews, whether they’re on your phone already or available for download in Marketplace. You’ll also bump into your applications where you’ll find them most useful: photo applications show up in the Pictures Hub and music applications in Music + Videos.

    Start Screen + Live Tiles

The Live Tiles on Start show you what’s happening with your applications, your upcoming appointments, your social networks and more. Get a quick weather update, find out when someone likes your Facebook post and see how many calls you missed during your afternoon run. You can pin more things to Start to keep them handy: applications, contact groups, a mapped location, a song or album, your best snapshots, a webpage… too many to list here!

    Music + Video Hub

The Music + Videos Hub is your anytime entertainment centre. Play your music collection — synchronised wirelessly from your PC — or stream or download new tunes from Marketplace. Watch TV programmes, films or your own video clips on the high-resolution screen and listen to custom playlists, radio and more on your phone. Add an optional Zune Music Pass to get unlimited music for one low monthly fee.

    Office Hub

No more need to be chained to your desk — Windows Phone has mobile versions of Word, Excel, OneNote and PowerPoint for working on the go. Start a Word document or Excel workbook on your phone, then synchronise it to SkyDrive so you can write or edit some more on your computer later. And SharePoint Workspace Mobile makes it easier to collaborate with your coworkers when you’re out and about.

    Internet Explorer 9

Internet Explorer Mobile puts the web in your pocket, harnessing the power of your phone’s hardware for faster, smoother web browsing. Open multiple tabs, get search suggestions as you type in the address bar and press phone numbers and addresses on webpages to call or map them. Internet Explorer is social too: you can share web links in email or with your social networks, right from your phone’s browser.

    One Button to Bing!

Where can we eat? When is the film? How do I get there? What’s that song? Press the Search button to get answers from Bing or use Bing Maps to find an address or get directions. You can also search with your voice, take a photo to get results with Vision search or find out what song is playing with Music search — your phone “listens” and then finds the name, artist, album and even where you can hear or buy it.

    _______________________

And those are a few of the 500 new features that Windows Phone 7.5 bring to the table :)

You can find more on http://www.windowsphone.com

No mango update on my optimus 7 yet :o(Vodafone Germany)
Edit: just tried the method on the other windows phone 7 topic and got it to work. Flashing to mango as we speak

I flashed to the open Eu version first then followed the instruction on the XDA forum. Updated to mango, now I can put on custom ringtones using Zune and I can send and receive MMS messages on o2 :D.

Mine was one of the german Vodafone branded ones too.

Teach me your ways master. I too would love to be able to send mms. I'll probably never send any but I'd like the option :D

I also have a German Optimus 7 however I have already updated to mango.

Hello, I have one of the German LG Optimus 7 phones and am hoping to update to Mango. It hasn't appeared automatically yet but found this info on a site which shows how to force the update.
    http://www.wpcentral.com/force-mango-update-early-through-zune-software

I also found this info. Wondering if anyone has experienced this problem.

    http://www.wpcentral.com/lg-optimus-7-e-900-update-error

I'm trying to decide on whether to go ahead and try update or wait until solution is found to this problem. If worse comes to worse, can I restore to my current version of 7392.

It appears I have spoken too soon. I can send and receive MMS messages and not access the web or Vice versa. BAH!

    LOOOL. Got it :D.

Here is how I got it working or what I did at least.

I installed a vanilla ROM (no manufacturer) over the vodafone German NnDo version. Info here

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=935578&page=1

After setting it up, I enabled ADC in the engineers menu
    Info here,

    http://japrogbits.blogspot.com/2010/11/enable-adc-on-your-windows-phone-7.html

and installed the LG network app from the marketplace. This did not get MMS working, could surf the web though.

Now, after this I could not get the phone to update to NoDo again as Zune was being as ass. So tricked it into giving it to me.
    Info here,

    http://www.winrumors.com/still-waiting-on-nodo-easy-workaround-enables-quick-delivery/

Afterwards I followed the guide to move my phone to Mango. Found here,

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1215501

I did not need to run steps 16 onwards.

I had ADC enabled the whole time and after the update I can now send MMS to get the internet working at the same time I changed the internet connection to the one that says internet in the engineers menu.

I managed to get mms working on my optimus 7(Germany) with mango fw.

Simply download the Network setup app from LG App store.
    (ADC cannot be enabled)
Run the App. It will restart your phone and set it to Vodafone Ireland(272)
Set your Apn in Settings>mobile Network to live.vodafone.com
    Done.

The Music + Videos Hub is your anytime entertainment centre. Play your music collection — synchronised wirelessly from your PC

i find bizarre that your PC has to be connected wirelessly to your home network for this to work

No it doesnt. My PC is connected to my network with Ethernet, and syncs to my WP7 wirelessly.

Willnae work for me full stop and all the documentation seems to make the assumption that the PC is connected to the same ssid

    Setup

When you set up wireless sync, the Zune software searches your computer for a wireless profile. Zune will automatically locate the network name and network key used by your computer to connect to the network if:

You're using Windows 7 or Windows Vista

Your computer is wirelessly connected to the network

Exactly what won't work for you?

Wireless synchronisation? Of course this needs wireless ... it is wireless.

Or did you mean synchronisation in general? You can sync with cable too.

Or did you mean you can't play music? Did you sync music to the phone yet using the cable?

Wireless synchronisation is only to allow you to add new music to zune and then it will wireless sync to your phone while you are charging over night.

The update schedule is confusing me.

Odd situation. I have a Samsung Omnia 7 model. It was originally Three, and has been unlocked, and I'm now using it on Meteor. Anyone have any ideas which operator I'll be waiting on for the update? Surely it would be Meteor?

How can I force the update?

    Cheers!
    Mick.

EDIT:Just found out how to force it. Might try this tonight and report back.

Check in settings and about to see which carrier the phone's firmware is. I'd say its Three.

Try this to force and update to Mango it's worked for most people in the other thread

    1. Start Zune
    2. Turn off Data connection and Wifi on the Phone
    3. Connect the Phone with the PC (USB)
    4. Start the update search in Zune
    5. About 3 seconds later, disconnect your PC from the internet (Turn WLAN off).
    6. Zune finds Update. Press OK.
    7. Connect to the internet again and install the update.

Can we try to get a list of Mango features that have either been crippled by Irish Carriers or are not available due to Region Locking?

Got Mango last night on Samsung Omnia 7 (carrier is Three).

    So far...

    Crippled By Three
    Visual Voicemail
    Internet Sharing

    Unavailable/Unusable Due To Region
    Local Scout

Can be enabled by changing Browser and Search Region to English(United Kingdom)
    Navigation

    Crippled By ?????
    Bing Audio Search
    Bing Visual Search

The crippling of Visual Voicemail and Tethering are a serious problem for me, and will mean I'll be giving up on Windows Phone. Anyone want to buy a barely used Samsung Omnia 7?

Lol which company has visual voicemail in Ireland?

Internet Sharing Can be enabled on the Omnia 7. I have it set up. Its only 5 mins to do it if you have a dev unlocked device.

Otherwise just need to wait till OEM's (Yes Samsung, HTC, LG and other to give you an update, because internet sharing already exists in WP7.5

Local Scout is not available cause Bing is still in Beta
    Same for maps, vision, audio.

(Set your locale of your phone to the US and you suddengly unlock all of them except Local Scout. There are gMaps alternatives on the Marketpalce that are free to retain local search.)

Youll get these problems on all platforms. But thats why you got a marketplace. To extend the functionallity of the phone from stock

Lol which company has visual voicemail in Ireland?

I had Visual Voicemail on Android thanks to Hullomail. Since they don't support WP7 that's a problem, particularly when Three cripple this feature when Microsoft actually implement it.
Internet Sharing Can be enabled on the Omnia 7. I have it set up. Its only 5 mins to do it if you have a dev unlocked device.

Again, I had this feature out of the box on Android. I'm not going down the road of hacking WP7 to enable features that should work out of the box. On one hand you have carriers forcing users to hack phones to enable features, and on the other you have Microsoft making threats about hacking the phones. They can argue about that, I'll just move on.
Otherwise just need to wait till OEM's (Yes Samsung, HTC, LG and other to give you an update, because internet sharing already exists in WP7.5

No need for an OEM update, this and Visual Voicemail are crippled by the carrier. An OEM update won't change that.
Youll get these problems on all platforms. But thats why you got a marketplace. To extend the functionallity of the phone from stock

That's fine, but I think I'll pass on paying for apps to help WP7 play catch-up.

How do you know it's the carriers? If it's the carriers then my LG Optimus 7 with the European open firmware should have it enabled, but I don't. Same with visual voicemail (whatever that is).

I know it's the carriers because Microsoft have said all along that Tethering and VVM are there for the carriers to implement.

It doesn't matter what firmware your phone has if it's connected to a carrier that tells the phone to hide the feature.

If Three came out and said, we don't have the ability to support VVM right now, but we're working on it, that would be fine.

I suspect the truth is they charge for access to voice mail and they don't want to lose cash that by allowing people access to this useful feature, so we'll never see it.

Of course they'll never just say that and give people clarity.

The tethering issue is less excusable, they don't need to do anything for this, it's already possible on other phones, they seem to be just jumping on the chance to make it difficult for people to get full value out of that All You Can Eat Data.

Between Carrier blocking and regional Issues, Windows Phone feels like something dated from about 2009, even with Mango installed.

I've tried getting a definitive list of the 500 new features that Microsoft claimed were in Mango, to see how many we actually got. It looks like Microsoft have been VERY liberal in their definition of a 'feature'.

Like no other company does that. Its marketing like everything else. You being with three should know that the best.

Apple and google does it as well. Every company does it. You might not see the feature. It just might be a process that does something in the background. But it's still a feature.

All you can eat data is not all you fan eat data.

Its an assumption that for majority of people 15gb of allowance is all they could use. But 15GB for some is not all you want.

Either way no one forced u to go with wp7 or to stay with it.

Me and alot of other people that went with wp7 are quite happy with it.

It has all the feature we want and like any other platform if it's not there. Get an app.

    Everyone had different preferences :)

To me android and ios interface is absolutely boring. Only time i go on my SGS2 time is to demo it to people that want to buy it or to watch movies on a bigger screen.

I don't see a massive difference between the two in terms of features.

Especially since i enabled tethering I'm completely happy with it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 55 ✭✭daltonr

You might not see the feature. It just might be a process that does something in the background. But it's still a feature.

The point you're missing is that most of the major features are not available to Irish users. Here's The features matrix.

    http://www.andrewtechhelp.com/andrews-tech-opinions/126-windows-phone-7-feature-availability-matrix-the-mango-edition

Read it carefully. Virtually nothing new for Irish Users in terms of Bing or Zune, and with VVM and Tethering also crippled, that's the heart of Mango gone.
Either way no one forced u to go with wp7 or to stay with it.

I never said anyone did. I'm just here to make sure that anyone else thinking of buying a WP7 phone knows that the Irish experience is severely limited as compared with the claims by Microsoft (which only apply in the US).
Me and alot of other people that went with wp7 are quite happy with it.

    Great.

Not ture, the OEM's have to release drivers for the internet sharing/tethering

    http://msicc.net/?p=679

As for Visual Voice mail, no carriers offer this in Ireland. You can use hullo I use blueface for my visual voice mail, but no carriers offer visual voice mail in Ireland yet.

Interesting. I was under the impression that Mango was going through rigorous testing with the manufacturers and Carriers precisely to make sure that the advertised features were available.

Handy to leave talk about particular features out there and only admit at the last minute that actually, no, that'll require some other future unspecified update that you may or may not get. NICE!!!
    AntiVirus wrote: »

Yep, but as I mentioned before If I have to go back to Hullomail, then I have to throw the Windows Phone in a drawer and go back to Android.

Really don't understand why Microsoft risks leaving features like Visual Voicemail in the Hands of carriers. Apple did the same. Go out and buy HulloMail or build a similar project and just do it. You don't need carriers, Hullomail have proven this.

Leaving things up to the carriers just means guaranteed pissed off customers who have no confidence that a phone/os will work as expected.

    On the bright side.....

If you are a Windows Phone User, make sure to completely reset your phone after the Mango Install, and choose English(US) on initial startup This enables more features than simply updating the phone and changing the region.

I've managed to get barcode scan of books working.

Fills you with confidence doesn't it???

Do not reset your phones!!!! Go into region+language and change the Browser & search language to United States. Thats all you need to do and bar code scaning will work.

Just on the Visual Voice mail, did you think by buying a windows phone the mobile operators in Ireland would just enable visual voice mail? Thats whats coming across from your posts?

Not ture, the OEM's have to release drivers for the internet sharing/tethering

Interesting. I was under the impression that Mango was going through rigorous testing with the manufacturers and Carriers precisely to make sure that the advertised features were available.

Handy to leave talk about particular features out there and only admit at the last minute that actually, no, that'll require some other future unspecified update that you may or may not get. NICE!!!

As for Visual Voice mail, no carriers offer this in Ireland. You can use hullo I use blueface for my visual voice mail, but no carriers offer visual voice mail in Ireland yet.

Tbh nobody cares about visual voicemail. Its only a couple of power users usually. Unless its my area only that doesn't use it?

You don't need to do a complete reset to enable Bing vision or music or navigation.

All you need to do is change locale to US from settings. Restart the phone and your done.

Barcode scanner and translator works perfect for me

Read it carefully. Virtually nothing new for Irish Users in terms of Bing or Zune, and with VVM and Tethering also crippled, that's the heart of Mango gone.

I think you're quite misguided to call those four features the "heart" of Mango. The new features in Bing and a Zune Pass would be very nice to have, but they hardly make the update useless. I've never used voicemail or tethering, but I have used linked e-mails, the Facebook/Windows Live Messenger chat, Internet Explorer 9, the battery saver, improved Find My Phone, custom ringtones, pinned ShellTiles, BackgroundAgents, groups... the list goes on.

Microsoft never announced tethering or visual voice mail as new features in Mango. Visual voice mail was never announced, and the first official word about tethering was from the Windows Phone Blog which stated that it would only be available on newer devices. Joe Belfiore's tweet that AntiVirus linked to also gave the same caveats.

So I don't see how you can feel cheated about a feature that was only announced the same day that the Mango rollout began, and that Microsoft have always said was subject to the hardware being able to support it.

And the blog and tweet also state that the lack of tethering support is a device driver issue; not a carrier issue like you stated before:

I know it's the carriers because Microsoft have said all along that Tethering and VVM are there for the carriers to implement.

It doesn't matter what firmware your phone has if it's connected to a carrier that tells the phone to hide the feature.

Did that. Didn't work. Started working after Reset. Obviously try changing the settings first, but if like me you find it doesn't work, then a reset seems to do the trick.

No. I figured that either the platform would mature sufficiently for someone like HulloMail to provide an app, or, the VVM promised by Microsoft wouldn't rely on carriers. Wrong on both points and I should have stayed with Android until WP7 came up to scratch.

Earlier you said you didn't know what it is, and now you know that nobody cares about it!

Anyone paying Three to listen to their voicemails cares about Visual Voicemail, or should do.

So I don't see how you can feel cheated

I don't feel cheated. I said above, I'm posting here to warn people that the Windows Phone experience that they may hear about from Microsoft, does not exist in Ireland, or in virtually any country outside the US.

So, now we begin the wait for Tango, ... I'm bored already.
