Saudi woman to get ten lashes for driving

    Disgusting

    http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2011/0927/breaking47.html
A Saudi woman has been sentenced to 10 lashes for defying the kingdom’s ban on female drivers.

Shaima Ghassaniya was found guilty of driving without the government’s permission.

No laws prohibit women from driving, but conservative religious edicts have banned it.

The ruling comes just two days after Saudi King Abdullah announced that, for the first time, women have the right to vote and run in the country’s 2015 local elections.

Najalaa Harriri, who is also facing court for driving, said she needed to drive to take better care of her children.

The verdict is the first of its kind in Saudi Arabia. Other women were detained for several days, but had not been sentenced by a court.
How any country can get away this is beyond belief.

It's not right full stop - the forbidding of women driving, and the 10 lashes. But yes, she would have known there'd be consequences.

Not really "us" though. And it doesn't for one second mean we don't have a right to criticise Saudi, just like we criticise the catholic church here.

I cannot understand the logic of the usual "Awful stuff happened in our country, therefore we can't criticise other countries" stuff. As if we hold responsibility for the awful stuff that happened in our country up to 40 years ago...

And if anyone defends this because "it's their culture", you're a twat...

It isn't actually against the law. It's a religious edict. But anyway, sometimes laws are better broken than accepted.

Sure they only got the right to vote... She probably got really excited and drove down the polling station a few years too early.

I think we have enough of our own problems without needing to worry about a Saudi woman breaking her country's laws.

No laws prohibit women from driving, but conservative religious edicts have banned it.

This unecessary violence is doled out due to religious edict is just plain discriminatory against half the population of that country.

Religion has stupid laws that effect people everywhere in the world. Here even today to a lesser extent. Religion should have no effect on anyone's day to day life with laws or rules that don't want it to regardless. But it does.

Meh, I could cherry-pick an atrocity done in the name of christianity and write "Christianity, the religion of peace and tolerance ".

Give me a moderate muslim before a fundamentalist christian any day... and vice versa.

Shur you could say that about anything ever.

There's a building going up in the playing field in my neighbourhood - I'd better worry about that rather than worrying about anything at a national level...

I wasn't even hitting at that, I was hitting at stupid stuff that effects us because of religion, because the poster I quoted said that religion should not have any say in the laws of a country.

It does here with, education, marriage, alcohol, trivial but still effects the average pleb.

It's a bit dangerous giving her 10 lashes to stick on in traffic. Hard enough to use mascara while driving.

I seen a programme about Sharea law, I was expecting to be horrified, but no, the system actually works and in some case better then our system.

In the case of lashes it wasn't cat of nine tales stuff, it was more a symbolic public humiliation.

In saying that the programme I seen was filmed in a part of Nigeria and not Saudi.

Because we all know what a progressive and fair country that is (not) Saudi even makes Nigeria seem like a shining beacon of the free world.

Who says we are trying to change it? Surely the women who are pissed off in Saudi have a right to at least try.

Fair fecks to her. Hope more and more stand up the the scumbags now as a result.

Women know the law in that country. If you aren't allowed to drive, don't drive. Better "human rights" didn't happen over night in the western world.

I have and its not as simple as a you think you know it.

I know how this sounds but it was done gently and with the public, it was a shaming and humiliation for their actions of offending the community.

It was more communal justice then state out of touch justice.

Like American Judges making offenders wear signs.

But it worked levels of crime were greatly reduced although you could get a hand amputated, it only happened once and that guy asked for that sentence so he would be forgiven by god for his crime.

Not at all. This is a different country and a different culture and religion. They take religion more seriously in that part of the world. The Qur'an is literally the truth to most of the people in these countries. It isn't like our part of the world.
