Anyone planning on watching this, pretty sure it's going to act out like any other snuff film would...

I don't rate Barker at all. I rate Andy Lee much higher and anyone following my posts over the last year will know that's saying a lot.

Can't believe Barker has gone straight in for Martinez, he hasn't fought anyone even near World class level, he's in for a big shock and a good few big punches to the head.
I think Barker has a decent engine but that's about it, this could be nasty on Saturday night.

Paul Williams is about ten times better than him... and we all know how that ended...

Not really expecting a huge amount from this fight but gonna watch just to hopefully see Martinez put in a clinical performance like he did against Dzinzurik.

Speaking of Paul Williams we've seen some iffy decisions in recent times, but his last "win" was the worst decision I've ever seen. The judges must have been on the take.

As for the Martinez- Barker fight, i'm going to give it a miss as the Ireland v Italy game is on at 8 am.

Barker is going to get a hiding. KO'd in the first few rounds, Martinez rounds 1-3 at 5/1 for me. And a bit on rounds 4-6 at 10/3.

His first fight with Martinez, fair enough. That fight with Lara was a joke, one of the worst decisions I've ever seen.

I think Sergio ruined him, since that fight he's all talk about retiring and he apparently hasn't been training well...

Oh there was no real dispute about his win over Martinez, i meant about boxing adjudication in general in recent times, culminating with the decision in the Lara fight. I wouldn't have blamed Lara for contemplating walking away from Boxing after that happened.

I heard that about Williams too. He'll hopefully call it quits. As he should not be in ring again with the likes of Martinez again if the desire to compete is gone.

I backed Martinez by stoppage at 4/9.

It was 15/8 on Ladbrokes a few weeks back but they had corrected the error before I found out. That would have been a steal. I see it going similar to the Martinez/Dzinziruk fight.

Martinez stoppage at 4/9 is like buying money.

You wouldn't have got paid on it, they had mayweather to beat baldomir up at 4/1 i got 800 on it and then they gave me the 1/7 payout.

I don't think a knockout is as much on the cards as people think, barker naturally much bigger, solid beard solid credentials and martinez isn't a one punch ko guy, williams is a welter it's more an accumulation but i wouldn't be at all supried if barker took him the distance

That's exactly how i see it but i think Dzinziruk is better than Barker, i really don't think barker knows what he's let himself in for.

I've been eyeing up that 4/9 as well, i'm going to put a couple of euros on that as well. I do think Barker has a decent engine but as i've said this is World class level he's fighting now.

That engine will be no good to him if he's missing his head. That is easy money...

    Paddypower or betfair?

Just seen the total rounds is 1.90 for Under 8.5 rounds... He'll surely have him out of there by then

I think this wil be aclear win for Martinez.

Sergio is taliking about dropping to 150 lbs to meet either Manny or Floyd.
    Wow!

    I seen Ladbrokes prices .
They were amongst the first to give prices .
    I got a few hundred on Sergio by KO/TKO/DSQ @ 15/8

I got a few hundred on the fight not to go the distance @ 13/8

and a hundred on the fight to finish between rounds 6 -12 @ 4/1

About 10 days later , I get an email to say the prices were misquoted , and asked if i'd like to accept @ 4/9 instead .

I really think Ladbrokes just got their odds wrong , and noticed a heavy wedge going on a lobsided Martinez KO !

It certainly wasn't a typo . And then you look at Barkers undefeated record , and Sergio's 50% KO rate and you can understand why somebody in Ladbrokes had got it wrong (on paper) .

However , they said that they were happy to keep my 'fight to finish between rounds 6-12' bet @ 4/1
    (the current price is 7/4)

Ladbrokes aren't the worst , they been good with issues like that over the years .
This time , I didnt kick up a fuss over them cancelling the prices . Fair is fair.

No chance Mayweather would accept this fight . But I'd give him the solid respect if he did .
    It's a chance he dosen't have to take .

Sergio beats both , especially Mayweather .

Sergio Martinez is like a mongoose

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,825 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Dropping to 150 lbs I would give Manny a decent chance. Manny's toughness could allow him to make t 12, and his work rate, speed, feet and power could trouble Sergio. I thibk Floyd would find it a step too far. Stles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,023 ✭✭✭colly10

I'd be surprised if Martinez had anything to offer at 150. Martinez is a great fighter to watch and I'd prefer not to see him destroyed by the weight, I'd like him to get a good payday but these fights shouldn't happen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,426 ✭✭✭clubwelly

Sergio is very unlucky there's no one in his division, I doubt Cotto would fight him if he moved down to 150 and they wouldn't let Alvarez near him. Margarito would fight him but if he losses to Cotto he'll prob retire.

If he moved up to Supermiddle he could face Ward, Froch, Bute or Kessler.

I think Barker will last for 6 rounds

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,825 ✭✭✭✭walshb

I'm with Colly. Dropping to 150 for Sergio cannot be all that healthy. He is a big lad now. 36, and the drop may weaken him quite a bit. Ok, he can rehydrate, but I reckon a max weight on fight night will be installed on fight night. A fighter like Manny, so quick, alert, aggressive and fast could make it a tough night for a weakened Martinez.

Margarito was 160 I think on fight night, and Manny obliterated him. I know, Sergio right now is a whole lot better, but Sergio would still have to drop to 150; how good will he be then?

I still think Floyd finds it the tougher match because Floyd isn't as ferocious or as busy as Manny. Sergio won't have to worry aboyt 3 mins solid of fighting. With Manny, he will be kept on high alert for every second of every round.

Martinez by stoppage. Barker is pretty overrated in my opinion. He hasn't beaten anyone relevant to warrant the shot and the fact he is British, really got him the fight.

Macklin / Martinez would have been without a doubt better because at least Macklin would have a chance unlike Barker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,825 ✭✭✭✭walshb

I wouldn't give Mackilin much hope at all. Too feather fisted, and he can be hit easily enough. I don't think he'd make it beyond the mid rds.

Martinez is leagues ahead of Sturm, and we saw when Sturm opened up that Matthew can be shown up quite a bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,625 ✭✭✭✭Johner

Macklin would do worse than Barker I'd say!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,986 ✭✭✭Spazdarn

Lee, Macklin, Barker are all in and around the same level. There's only one result.

The more i think about this the more money i want to put on Martinez at 1-2, it just has a slaughtering all over it.

That 1/2 is to win by KO/TKO etc?

    Fight to finish between round 6 - 12 .
    thats what i'm on .

On a side note , jackos doctor looks like tiger woods ..... ( just sayin')

I think people are underestimating Barker a little. Martinez certainly is anyway.

Barker has good skills, he is untested at this level but he does the fundamentals very well. He will not be playing into the hands of Martinez by trying to make it exciting thats for sure. Something Macklin would try i'd imagine and there would only be one outcome there.

I honestly think Macklin is an easier fight for Martinez than Barker is.

I reckon Barker will give a decent account of himself, losing it on points or else a late stoppage. But I don't expect Martinez to look as impressive as he has done in his last few fights.

We have grounds to underestimate Barker. Look at the records of both:

    Martinez 3 best wins
    1. Williams
    2. Pavlik
    3. Dzinzurk
    Also drew with Kermit Cintron

    Barker's 3 best wins
    1. Spada
    2. Belghecham
    3. Mc Dermott

Sorry but Barker's three wins don't warrant him a shot a Martinez.

I was kinda referring to him in relation to Macklin. Who has Macklin beaten to warrant a world title shot against Sturm?

Macklin and Barker are on the same level I reckon, only Barker out boxes Macklin 9 times out of 10. Thats a contentious thing to say, but I think its a fair statement.

Now Martinez is on another level totally, but it doesn't mean it will be an easy night for him. I think it will be a sticky one for him, and I don't expect him to look good.

Another controversial thing i will say is that I do think Martinez is slightly overrated. He has good variation to his shots but he also did it the hard way and had alot of miles on the clock also.

He caught Williams cold in that second fight, he beat a mentally fragile Kelly Pavlik and Dzinzurk was game but really not even a real middleweight

Asikainen, Varon and Yori Boy Campas. Better names than the ones Barker has beaten particularly Asikainen, he was still a very good fighter when Macklin blasted him to the EBU title for the first time.

Doing well so far. Barker has feck all power. Needs to be first a bit more. Litle hesitant at times when in range.

They said tremendous rd for Barker, but still, Martinez outscored him there.
