anti virus software

hi

I just bought a new laptop there and have downloaded Microsoft security essentials, do I need to download anything else.

Sorry about this its my first laptop so im not sure what I should get or remove from it

If you want I'm sure you could find a good deal on Norton or something, but other than that just be careful what sites you are going on and what you are downloading

You are fine with MSE, no need to buy an Anti Virus especially Norton, yes its improved lately and no longer as much a resource hog, but common sense with mse is all you need!

Though, if you ever did feel nervous, I thoroughly recommend Eset. I've used it for years and have been delighted with it.

Use this link to get the following:
MalwareBytes Anti-Malware - Free spyware scanner; update and click run a full scan monthly (decline the trial of the full version if it offers)
Spybot Search and Destroy - Free spyware scanner; update and immunize monthly (you can run a scan if you feel like it but Malwarebytes has a better scanner), immunization is all you want it for
CCleaner - Crap cleaner; run monthly (it will empty the recycle bin) to delete crap, temp files, browser histories etc.
Defraggler - Defragmenter; much better than the default windows one, set a schedule to run monthly

thats interesting I wasn't aware of that. Must try the Defraggler you mentioned. Googling around this one seems highly recommended.

i have Auslogic and Smart defrag on board although i mainly use Auslogic as imo its better. Both are good though...tend to avoid anything that Microsoft supplies, out of habit more than anything else really - tend not to trust what they produce...my opinion, nothing more so keep your lawyers away from me Bill!!!

I've used MSE since it was launched and haven't had a problem since. I don't use any other program and there's a thread over in virus and malware where it scored the highest of all AV programs.

running avast free version on my new PC and pretty happy with it. cnet rates it pretty highly and i tend to trust their reviews. used AVG paid version on my old laptop and again never had any problems with it. guess they're all great until a trojan sneaks in the back door and crashes the lot!

I will admit that it's a personal preference regarding anti virus. But I had a recent hiccup with AVG (pro) where it kept finding (but not healing) a worm. Installed MSE and got rid of it fine.

Just take a look at the poll link I posted earlier to see comparisons and which is better for you.

Move everything to another drive, then move it back. Does the same thing as a defrag.

I'm just going what my friend got me to do, He has a degree in something computery and repairs them in the summer, Its not really something id be %100 able to give advice on tbh, But AVG Free never gave me a problem

I've switched from AVG to MSE. You'll find a lot of people have. AVG got very slow for me especially on older machines.

His knowledge is a bit out of date

AVG used to be good, but over the past few years it has become bloated. Avast and MSE are the best free anti virus packages out there that aren't resource hungry imho

Yeah its been about 4 or 5 years since AVG was any good, its one of the worst now and yes worse than McAffee even. Stick with MSE, if you want to buy get something like Eset but why bother as the free ones are alrite? Avast is another decent free one, maybe slightly lighter than MSE on older hardware I've found
