the aim is to get the engine/running gear without the name on the back...

like what daihatsu did with the charade GTTI or is300 sportsback ( but class it as commerial or similar )

You can drive them at any time if you're prepared to pay the premium..

as for when you can drive a decent engined car in this country for a reasonable premium? The answer to that is never.

It is illegal for an insurance company not to quote you.

    They must quote you.

Please remember that engine sizes and TAX bands are not to be forgotton about.

Most young people forget that a 2 litre and over 2 litre will be a financial killer each year.

Is this correct? I thought the law was that you were entitled to be insured. So if you were refused insurance, you could go to the IIF who would tell you how to go about obtaining a quote. But that any individual insurance company was entitled to refuse to quote you.

I'm afraid I don't have any literature to back that up, so I'm open to correction.

Out of curiosity, how much are you paying on the Clio? And did you claim for the old one?

I dont mind paying up to 3k for insurance currently 1750 on a fiesta. Will ring around in jan when ive got renewal coming.

    thanks guys

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,157 ✭✭✭Compton

I dont mind the tax or running costs either.. I only do around 12k km/s a year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,620 ✭✭✭Graham_B18C

I couldn't get quotes on anything fast until I was about 22, at the time 123 were quoting Tegs and the like. They told me last year they weren't anymore.

I paid 1850 when I was 22 on my DC2 fully comp, when i was 23 it jumped to 1950 so I got tpft for 1450 then this year it dropped to 650.

Paddy, I do think that the whole illegal thing is rubbish, I rang virtually every insurance company in the phone book last year and I managed to get 2 quotes, one from First Ireland and one from britton, both of which were extortionate. If an insurance thinks a person is too high a risk, then why should they have to quote them? If this was illegal, I'm sure more than 2 companies would of quoted me

Interesting, will most likely have to wait another few years.. Are there any fast enough cars that are insurable?? and btw, the golf gt tdi isnt the answer :P Not mad about hatchbacks tbh

The regulator and also the EU states that you must be given a quote.

Most of the insurance companies just play dumb on this and try to fob you off.

Now even if the quote was a stupidly high quote of 5,000 euro (as an example),you must be given a quote as thats your legal right.

Dude, I won't be recommending TDIs anytime soon.

106 GTI or a Saxo VTS might be worth a look, much less stigma attached to em compared to the Japan stuff. Although, as much as I dont like to admit it, a mapped Golf would probably be quicker on the straights though

I'm not the one stating that this is illegal on a public forum with no proof, you are.

Why is it that the the Insurance Regulator force a company to quote if you show them three letters of refusal if its illegal for one company to refuse? If it was illegal, shouldn't you just need to provide them with one refusal letter?

I don't work in insurance, nor do I claim to know very much about it. You do, that's why I'm asking you

Ive just told you that you have to be legally quoted, when you ask for a quote. Its part of EU law and also with the insurance regulator and Federation of Insurance Companies.
I know my legal rights and my consumer rights too in this country.

    Do you???

Clearly not, as said its a public forum, for all I know you're making all this up. You don't seem to have proof, a link to this said law would he sufficient for me anyways.

If you provide it you will get an apology from me for doubting you :)

Accord Type R is a big car with power but your age prevents it, as it would with a 6 MPS. Have you ever tried get a quote on BMW 320 or the like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,157 ✭✭✭Compton

Nope not yet. I wouldnt even want the mps, just the normal 1.8. Im gonna seriously ring around in Jan. thanks for the help

Ah ok, when i saw Legacy in your OP, I assumed you wanted bigger power. I can't imagine a 1.8 Mazda 6 would be overly expensive. Nice looking car too :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

I'm not going to claim it's lightning quick or anything, but it's certainly better than the usual run of the mill.

    320d Coupé, 150bhp/330nm, I'm 20 with 3 years NCB and TPFT is 1100.

The 0-60 isn't hugely impressive at 8.5s, but it's a turbo diesel, the acceleration in 3rd/4th is the good part :) Top speed of 137mph and easily capable of 50mpg... And there's oodles of space inside the car (and in the boot)

I know its a different class of car.. but doesnt look like its possible to get insure til at least 20+ so will have to look at something slower..

max speed limit is only 120km/h anyway which is easily achievable in most cars :)

    2005 :)

Theres a lot of issues (mainly turbo) to look out for before 04/05, do your homework! :)

Paying 1900 fully comp on this one, didn't claim on the old one as I only had tpft on it anyway.

Interesting to know that insurance on a 350z is actually less than what it would be on this Clio coming in at 1800 fully comp..

    Insurance info on citizens advice

    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/travel_and_recreation/motoring_1/motor_tax_and_insurance/motor_insurance.html

"If you are refused motor insurance

Individual insurers have the right to refuse you cover, but they must provide you with a reason for the refusal should you ask for one. However, even though you have been refused cover, you are entitled to go to the Declined Cases Committee of the Irish Insurance Federation who will obtain an insurance quotation for you. In order for the Committee to consider your case you must first have sought and been refused quotations in writing from at least three insurers. (See 'Further information' below)."

Above link provides further info .

I got decent quotes on an Altezza before I bought the SiR...I think it was €1800 or so fully comp. I'm paying €1750 fully comp now on the SiR with all modifications declared...20 on Thursday so not too far away in age terms

He's insured with Aviva so I'm guessing they quoted him on the tezza, they wouldn't even consider me on anything over a 1.6 when I tried them, I was 22

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,157 ✭✭✭Compton

Interesting... When I rang Aviva I got a quote of 4950 on the fiesta..? Is it through a broker or has he been driving since he was 10 haha

Buy a DA6 Integra or a DC1 with a conversion, just swap your insurance from fiesta over to the car you buy and when the renewal comes in there gonna be more likely to insure you.

But insuring an car with a conversion is generally more expensive than insuring the real thing.

Someone posted in a different thread recently that he was quoted more on a B18 EG Civic than an M5

Hardly surprising - how many M5's are written off every year vs how many civics? Stuff that has feic all claims against it isn't going to be loaded from the start, despite falling into a higher risk category due to performance. That and engine swaps are like red to a bull for insurers... they start acting like the nononsense ad

I know this might sound silly but...<Mod Snip> I assumed that's what you meant earlier but I gave the benefit of the doubt, don't post stuff about insuring cars in dodgy ways in here again. Please and Thanks

If you're after a "performance" car that might be insurance friendly, have a look at the golf 1.4 TFSI the 170bhp version, for a truly rapid car i'd say 35+ before the insurance starts really dropping.

Mine dropped to a very reasonable amount when I turned 24.

EDIT: only noticed the "truly rapid" part there. You mean the likes of highly modified Evos and the like?
