It depends on your engine. You are taking over the motors forum...:pac:

Go on to www.castrol.co.uk and they should tell you the proper grade etc etc.

How long is a peace of string:)

Lay man here but depending on age of your car whether new or old . Is car a high performance car or an old banger.Full synthetic oil lasts a lot longer you can do more mileage on it than the other stuff.

^^^^^^ well that was an odd but amusing read. I reckon I might find the new "question" of the day thread quite amusing.

Op I challenge you to actually have at least one question per day here. EVERY day.

Make sure your battery is okay. If it dies after a couple of days being idle now, i wouldn't have much hope for it lasting the winter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 239 ✭✭thats not gone well

some form of peanut oil(?)* or similar on the door seals to stop them sticking is a lifesaver.

    * i think thats it anyway. i'm not entirely sure what works best but someone else can clarify.

Make sure ALL your lights are working

Carry spare lightbulbs (not just one, two. If one goes the other isn't far behind)

Check your coolant level and top up with the appropriate mixture (50:50 usually here)

Consider replacing you battery if it gives any hint that its on its way out. The cold likes to kill batteries.

    Carry a Hi-Vis jacket/vest and torch.

Change your wipers if there crap and fill the washer with something that won't freeze come the winter.

Ohh and have a sheet of cardboard/newspaper at the ready for those icy nights. Just pin it in place by the wipers and your windscreen is usually clear when you take it off in the morning

Any sort of washer treatment. I had tesco stuff in it last winter and it did the job. Some people say vinegar works too. Go into your local tesco and have a look.

Will do:) heard throwing in a small ammount of antifreeze works a treat too, but not too sure about it at all:)

Back to the oil thing, some older cars may need to go for a heavier oil as the engine wears the oil will run out quicker. So you might need to change from FS to SS...

    +1

2 tyres, one leaking shock (so you need 2 new ones anyway) & new discs and pads all round.

Ok, if they are that new, they mightn't have the balls to pull that one but you will most likely need a shock or two anyway according to them.

Not good for the paintwork ;)

Re Advance, I need my front wheels balanced so got a winter check groupon thing for €12 on the net, check of suspension, brakes, fluids etc and a wheel balance and rotate. Have yet to call into them though, defo discs and pads all round no doubt.

I'm half afraid to actually as I don't even have 100% faith that they'll remove the wheels etc and put them back on without chewing the lock nut. In fairness they can't be that bad I suppose.
