Racism is a no go but sexism is okay?

Why does this largely appear to be the case in Irish society? It seems okay to alot of people to ridicule one's gender but racism is a different kettle of fish and is treated much more seriously.

We often hear sexist jokes from men like 'get back in the kitchen' and 'make me a sandwich' and often a time you will hear women(who are the victim of cheating) tar all men with the same brush - ''Men, they're all the same'

To me, deriding one's gender is just as bad as ridiculing the colour of someone's skin. They are both forms of discrimination and neither should exist in 2011.

But for some reason one seems more accepted than the other, why is that?

Not in my book, both are as bad as one another to be fair. Racism has just been in the news more.

I'm not joking when I tell her to make me a sandwich.

Both are intolerable but I think everybody is guilty of both at times in their lives.

Sexism still gets a lot of news coverage........but only for women.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,041 ✭✭✭Seachmall

Because Irish people can give eachother **** and take it just as well. We know a kitchen joke or a Kerry man joke is just that, a joke.

Other cultures aren't necessarily as welcoming to that sense of humour, combine that with the PC craze that's sweeping the globe and jokes at the expense of foreigners are a no-go.

For the record I've made plenty of racist jokes around Irish people of non-Irish descent and they've never been taken the wrong way. As much as we complain about Irish culture that's one thing we do well, we've got a great sense of humour.

Ultimately though it comes down to the Jews and their attempts at world domination.

As with many of these threads, I do not see this being particular to Ireland, first time I ever heard the "make me a sandwich" thing was in the US tv show everybody loves raymond. I think I hear about as many racist jokes/comments as sexist ones, from both sexes and from other racists, like the cliche black comedian "black man goes like this, whiteman goes like this".
They are both forms of discrimination and neither should exist in 2011.
I am glad they do exist TBH, I would hate to see people taking themselves too seriously and be humourless PC drones. A lot of jokes are based on differences of some physicality.

I don't think joke making should be seen as similiar to actual racism or sexism.

Racism: not giving a woman a job, because she is a woman
Not racism: 'get back in the kitchen' (even though it's unfunny and overused)

    Racism, sexism, orgasm.

    2 out of 3 eint bad :(

People are way too PC and need to lighten the fúck up. Im not talking taking the piss out of everyone that passes you on the street but come on, "shouldint exist"?

Laugh at yourself first, and i think thats the huge problem here, people take themselves far too seriously.

    I'm with you OP.

It's about time us decent upper and middle class folk put aside our differences and focused on the real enemy: those tracksuit wearing scum who assault our senses with their alternative culture .

They are completely different mainly because there are plenty of men and women around to back themselves up when sexist jokes are told but that cant be said for minority groups. Hmm I thought this would be a long post but I guess not. Stupid question OP.

I know women are from Venus and men are from Mars, but they're actually still the same race.

I really think we all need to lighten up.

"Neither should exist in 2011" .

So in 5 years time we will all be boring mindless drones who cant have a laugh.

I don't want to live in that world!

No racism is ok too, judging by the black 'comedian' I just saw heckled to fück on The Roast of Charlie Sheen

but he was just overly sensitive. and tbh, even the women were funnier

Whats's needed here is some sexy racism. Or some racy sexism.

I remember one time you had to pay for sexism, the fact that we use it so freely now surely shows how progressive we have become as a society, no?

I'm not racist. Racism is a crime, and crime is for black people.

    Alternatively:

I'm not sexist. Sexism is wrong, and being wrong is for women.

A black man and a women are knocked down and go flying through the air about 20 yards, the police charged the black man with attempted breaking and entering a fleeing the scene and told the woman to make them a cup of tea and a sandwich.

Life would be so much duller without these kinds of jokes. When we would be ashamed of cracking a joke about our differences that aren't malicious or personal.

I love our dark sense of humour. We don't just take the piss out of others, we utterly destroy ourselves and crack jokes at our own expense to get a laugh.

I agree and myself and my mates are constantly making messed up jokes. Thing is theres nothing really that can be said at the expense of white, hetrosexual, males.

I don't find sexist stuff funny at all. I mean I hope I have a sense of humour but it's just not that funny. I suppose it's different when you're on the other end of it. It's difficult not to look at the men who do find it funny and think they're mammies are probably still making them dinner and tucking them into bed at night. Which I suppose is grand if that's what you're into. And then I don't really listen to what women have to say on the subject.

nah i do both in fairly equal proportions, their part of daily life , the difference is if your racist you might piss off some big black or polish lads , and with sexism worst case youve pissed off some women , but their in the kitchen so cant do anything to you
