Coffee in Waterford

I moved to Waterford a few weeks ago, and am looking for somewhere that serves a good Cafe Latte.
The cafe by Superquinn used to be good a few years ago, but seems to have gone downhill. Lily O' Briens is very hit and miss.
Tried many more but it seems nobody knows how to steam milk / cares to do it properly.
Can someone point me in the right direction?

Anyone who mentions O' Briens or similar will be severely punished!

Latitude in Michael Street seems to be popular enough.
Or that cafe on the quay next to where Hearnes used to be? (can never remember its name)

    I miss Johnny Hearnes :(

Ber franks is the name, very nice place too. Latitude is good to, now called Adele's

New cafe is opening up inside The Book Centre on October 3rd-- Cafe Libro. They have a couple other coffee shops with very good reputations.

Otherwise, I'd suggest hitting the market on Saturday and getting some badger and dodo.

    051 317002, Mon-Sat: 9.00am–5.00pm, Sun: 9.30am–5.00pm

I wouldn't bother mentioning some of the above as cafes but people's definition of a cafe varies.

    Missing from the list are:
    - Cafe Karma (The Quay)
    - Amandine Confectionery (Coffee to go) (City Square)
    - Debenhams Cafe (City Square)
    - Book Centre (John Robert's sq.)
    - Sweet Corner Traditional Sweet Shop & Tea Rooms (Patrick st.)

    Recent closures:
    - Lattetude (Michael st.)
    - Orange Cafe (The Quay)

The best, 'pure' cafes in Waterford, in my opinion are (in no particular order),
    - Gallweys
    - Bishop's palace
    - Park lodge
    - The Granary
    - Berfranks

I know some of you will be wondering why Cafe Luna is not on the list...

I'm not sure which has the best coffee in Waterford, probably a matter of personal taste.

Ber franks is a clear winner here IMHO. One off the beaten track a little bit is the café in the granary and I also like the ones in BB's but it's Ber franks all day long for me.

Kafe Karma on the Quay does good coffee/hot choc etc. Seems cheap enough also

Berfranks has above and beyond the best coffee in waterford

Thanks all, lots of great suggestions here. I tried Adele's today and got a very nice cup, not to mention the nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Reckon I'll hit Berfranks next.

What's wrong with a nice cuppa and a blaas? Coffee is for the Guineas! Pinkies up!

Is lattetude still out in WRH? I love the little cafe in the park, to me that's a real cafe. I'm not a big coffee drinker so I don't know how it would rate for coffee but it is very cosy. The only thing is that their cakes are a bit over priced but maybe rent is high and they need to cover their costs. I got a fairy cake there twice and it was definitely stale both times but other than that its a lovely place.

That building is great but the food is terrible. All defrosted, only it isnt. The coffee is OK but The New York Burger Co, does better coffee!

The coffee (and staff) down in the old Instore is just lovely. Pleasant place to watch the world go by.
Passed today think more household stuff gone in on ground floor . . . Different name of shop. Hook & something I think.

The Cafe Royal in the Theatre Royal would be my favourite.
the have a beautiful coffee and they do free refills what I find amaizing, me as a coffee junky :)
Plus the view is really worth while.
For me that's the spot to go

I don't drink coffee so I wouldn't make a point of visiting lots of different coffee places but I'm just wondering what percentage of them offer free wi-fi?

    I know of two places,
    Granary cafe, Hanover street
And Cafe Royal, at the theatre royal
    Offering free wi-fi.

So six places. That isn't too bad but I would have thought it's a fairly basic requirement for a coffee shop. If I was out on my own, it'd be nice to go in for a cup of tea or whatever but, given the choice between wi-fi and no wi-fi, I know where I'd be going.

Java republic is outdated in my and many other opinions, they used to be good, but now, there are far more better choice of coffee out there.

And about the Mint Cafe, it is a really nice spot, but by the time u get ur coffee it's cold already, the coffees look superb, the layer lattes etc. but I want a hot cup and they just can't deliver.
looks like if u want a good looking coffee u have to compromise somewhere :)

Gonz, would you not bring this to the attention of the management?

That's the same story as with the preveos post about the Park Cafe, the person liked the place and the coffee and didn't mind the stale pastry, same here, if u looking for a art work coffee, u have to include, it takes longer to make, and the milk has to be cooled down to get the layers perfect.
I'm a take away americano person, like it hot and fast. The mint cafe couldn't do ether, twice. Ps. Large TA coffee to weak, and I'm not used to strong coffee, so no exuse there :)
I'm not telling it's a bad place to go, quite
Oposite, it's stylish and has a good quality coffee bean and they do magic with the latte.
I'm not asking about much, just a good hot standard americano TA served fast. Can't get it there. Sorry.

Have tried a few other blends too such as illy and ponticelli and of course costa which i think nice but far too expensive, would always go for java republic if a had the option.... as a matter of interest what are the better choice of coffee out there?

I won't go anywhere that serves Java Republic the quality of the coffee compared the other brand is just not as good at all to me it always tastes burnt. The coffee in Gallaweys has always being very good when ive had it both in Waterford and Tramore

U have Lavazza - rich roast taste, matthew algie very nice coffee, united coffee/ Grand coffee very nice organic triple cert coffee. Java is a relic of the Irish coffee boom back in the day strong and herb, the coffee now have to be nice, mild, full flavour.

Sounds like some people would be better off posting to the County Waterford board for all the time they spend in the city. ;)

Is the Dunmore rd. city or county for example? ;)

The problem with Aoifes is the staff are just TOO in your face and friendly (yes, its possible to be too friendly). There is nothing wrong with the food and the options are very good but theres a lot to be said for just leaving people in peace to enjoy their lunch and move on. In the 3 times I was in here, I was bombarded with questions mid-lunch like "is everything ok", "hows the chicken", "are you enjoying that" etc. Again, once is a nice touch but any more that that and frankly you are annoying me. Its not a 5 star restaurant where detail is everything, its a cafe where people go for a quick lunch and move on, no need for the false merriment.

I dont mean the above to be nasty its genuinely constructive criticism, I had no issue with the food but because of the staff who spend the whole time singing and in your face about the food I wouldnt go back there.

Another +1 for Portico. If your interested in actual coffee, go in and have a pour over of one of their single origins. Consistently good coffee, friendly and knowledgeable staff and cheaper than costa!

In fairness a 2 year old thread was resurrected :), so Aoifes wasn't even open when most of the previous comments were made. Agree though it's a lovely place and the building is unique too.
