I think other countries have similar competitions too - I could be wrong.
Either way, I see no harm in it.
Every country has its unique competition and/or sports anyway and if it goes to making us different sometimes and makes us characteristically what we are, fair enough!

I am a City lad from the North so do not understand the actual ploughing but I think that that is just a side show. The main reason is business deals, buying and selling tractors and drinking pints.

I remember a friend used to go to the RUAS in Belfast. I didn't understand the attraction but he loved to get hammered on pints and forget about the sheep and tractors.

Ah sure what is there to driving but staying on the road...Ploughing is a highly skilled craft.

Expect alot of people not to have a clue of what goes on or anything, it's a big thing for farmers, a good day out, to see all different tractors and machinery. See the new models of tractors and the best breeds of cattle in the country.

it would be worth it just to see one of the weather girls in the flesh broadcasting from there in about 5 minutes

jean, the spanish one and the one who was preggers Im looking at you..

They'll be watching you slick city boys.

    <_<
    >_>

You'd be surprised the amount of moolah that will change hands during this competition. Not all big business needs to be done in a boardroom.

And yes, pints, many many pints will be consumed. Less of the watered down ****e you get at music festivals. Coupla bottles of the local firewater might make an appearance too.

Tis luvverly stuff. Prefer plum, but the regular oul spud flavoured stuff is grand too. Bit of OJ, take some of the alcohol sharpness of it, you're grand.

If you're dosed with a cold, a hot one, with lemon and cloves is guarenteed to scare the germs right out of you.

By all means have a national championship, but for god sake, why is it on the news? Anyone who cares already knows because they were there!

Why not have it on the news?

By that token, why have any news from Dublin on, because anyone who cares was already there.

Don't be daft. There's what, 5 million people in the country, say 10% of that care about this. That's 500,000 people. It was attended by 180,000 people in 2010. The other 320,000 might not be able to attend, due to actually having to look after farms and businesses and shít. It's possibly Europes larges open air Agri & Trade show, so why the fúck would it not be national news.

PS: On another note, I've noticed I'm very angry today.

Same could be said of the Dublin/Kerry game yesterday....
FFS... It is a huge event within the largest business sector in the country.

Yup - you should expect that because of the name - 'The National Ploughing Championship.' People will expect, understandably, that what takes place is in fact a national ploughing championship and not what actually takes place - a national ploughing championship tied alongside an agricultural fair.

Oh, and you're right - it is a big thing for farmers but other than that no one really cares, nor should they; and they certainly shouldn't be expected to know anything about it!

They always look like they're having a hoot at the ploughing championship so they do.

Fair play - wouldn't mind going some time.

As a non-culchie culchie I had to go there when working with a national sporting organisation for 2 years in a row and really enjoyed it.

Its so funny and typically Irish and just a great few days out. Everyone should go at least once!

    Everyone should attend once
They're brilliant and the pints are flowing
Sure the locations are picked to be pretty central, usually around Tipp, Offaly, Carlow, Kildare, that general area. Easy to drive to

Lots to see, people to talk to and if you want, take away leaflets, DVD's and brochures for machinery

And as said, this is a huge sector for Ireland and lots of deals get done, you don't need to go to a boardroom to do a business deal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

It's a huge event, it's like a festival crossed with the Ideal homes show, crossed with, well, a ploughing competition.

I'm not a farmer and I'm going-it's a good day out.Been a few times and have only looked at about 10 minutes of ploughing altogether at it.So much else to see and do.
Some damn fine ladies around too.

You're mad for a bit of the aul ploughing are ya? :D

I've been to a couple of agricultural fairs myself. We have a big one here in Toronto every year; one of the GF's relatives enters his Clydesdales (ahem) in the horse show - enormous feckin' things. We'll go and watch him compete again this year. Lots of pigs and cows and all sorts of shit. Tractors - trucks. Farm shit.

Why have the Dublin City Marathon on the news? Anyone who cares already knows because they were there!

Why have the Patrick's Day Parade on the news? Anyone who cares already knows because they were there!

And I've known a fair few come back from the championships having ploughed more than the greensward. I've know people come back bowlegged from the Dublin City Marathon as well, but seldom for as good a reason.

The NPC is something which doesn't, in fairness, sound like much fun in theory. But if you have any bit of go in you, and a few mates around you, it usually is!

I've been plenty of times and never actually seen any ploughing! It's a great day out. There are hundreds of stands and stalls selling something for all ages! There's food stands, fashion shows, music tents, stuff for kids to do, amusements and of course all the stands for farmers/builders. It's actually a lot of fun. To be honest its just like any trade show except for it targets pretty much all age grades.

How does this work, I've never been and have no idea about it. How much would tickets cost? If you go for the weekend, is there a camping place? Is there a stand overlooking the field that they plough or how do you watch what's going on? Is it only tractors, any horses/donkeys ploughing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 630 ✭✭✭Claasman

Most people go for a day, well most people i know anyway. Not sure what the craic would be with staying overnight. The actual ploughing is now a side show to the whole event. Its mainly full of trade stands, with some live demonstrations through out the day. There are pubs on-site aswell, but id say it would pretty much be a sausage fest.

You can walk around each plot individually an see the ploughing, there is different competitions for the ploughing, different plough sizes, reversible etc. There are usually a few horses ploughing aswell.

Whatever about the tractors, I would say the horses ploughing would be interesting to watch.

Great place, good grub and crackin' women.

Was worrying a burger at the John Deere stand, about two years ago, when this stout farmerette started circling.

Well ripened buns and good pressure on the camel area. Promising ,in other words.

What do you think of the driveshaft on that machine, says I ,by way of conversation.

She cocked her head and says" "If I saw a shaft like that approaching me I'd spread the thighs kinda rapido, bung buster for sure".

"Foo me" says I "You like it thick with plenty of oil" I could supply a lad like that.
"Well don't fcuk about then" says she, book us into the Keadeen and we'll see.

We did, and she took the best knotty I could offer, pink and stink... no hold back in fairness.

Went home with a wrinkled ballsack.
