Looks like a great game, I especially like the concept of it playing like a 2D Mario game whilst being in 3D.
What I've seen so far makes me excited for the game especially since there's precisley zero games for 3DS right now, this game and MK7 is exactly what the 3Ds is screaming out for to get the console started.

I have this pre-ordered on Amazon. It will finally give me a reason to use the 3DS.

I exclusively use my 3DS to play DS games, it's a crying shame because the machine itself is amazing but is being let down by incredibly poor software. Hopefully with the upcoming releases such as MarioKart and Land amongst others the auld 3DS will get the push it needs.

MK7? Am I missing something here, or would that mean Mortal Kombat: Armageddon?

Anyways, this game looks like great fun, as most Mario games are. I don't have a 3DS, but if I did, this would certainly be on my to-buy list. Also, I'm gonna have that music stuck in my head all damn day now, lol.

MK7 = MarioKart 7, thats what they're calling it. another misleading title from Nintendo.

Ah, I see. I spotted a pre-order case for that (and MarioLand 3D) in HMV a few days ago, but the title on it was just Mario Kart 3D as far as I can recall.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,041 ✭✭✭pdbhp

Well MarioKart 7 is the official name, seen a few pre order cases around myself but I'm sure there'll be enough copies to go around

Girlfriend is buying it for the 3DS we share, I'm getting her MK7 for Xmas and she is getting me Skyward Sword for xmas:)

there are a lot of games demanding my money right now but this is really high on my list. which is especially difficult as I will also have to buy a 3DS to play the flipping thing.

getting to play this and skyward sword next wednesday, looking forward to it

And Mario Kart 7 is out two weeks later! :(

Played this a few months ago and it didn't give me a wow factor that would make me want to buy it, let alone play it all the way through. Sure, it's good old Mario platforming but it didn't beat either Galaxy games on the Wii.

Really enjoyed MK7, though. It had some cool tracks with crazy shortcuts which I'd love to play with friends but I don't know anyone else with a 3DS :(

    That's because it's a 2D platformer, not 3D like galaxy.

Compare it with New Super Mario Bros. Wii or DS.

You're saying Super Mario Land 3D is 2D?

You're saying Super Mario Land 3D is 2D?

3d backrounds etc, 2d platforming , like super mario world on the snes, but now the mountains you run past in the distance seem in 3d i would imagine

edit: ignore the above rubbish !! from what i had seen of it i thought it was a 2d platformer. just looked at the opening video and its a whole lot more. looks very interesting indeed

Glad you checked it out. Was only messing with /\/ollag because he didn't. I wanted to like the demo but I just prefer 3D Mario with Wii controls/ big screen TV.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,614 ✭✭✭Nollog

    It's hard to explain.
The platforms are 3D, in 3D, etc., but the platforming is very much left-to-right, or down-to-up, rather than what you'd get in the 3D games.

I was partly paraphrasing what Miyamoto said about the game at TGS.

Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 are probably the only games I'd ever play on a 3DS. So I'm not sure whether to actually get one or not. Still have a DS Lite.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

First review is out - Edge gave it
    8/10
    .
It's the best handheld Mario game in years, but negatives include the tanooki suit (available or can be brought into almost every level) makes the game too easy, it is only 7-8 hours long, and the levels are conservative and linear (rather than encouraging exploration).

Still a day 1 buy for me, though.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,041 ✭✭✭pdbhp

Both new Mario games on 3DS look great, there seems to be a bit of a cloud over the console the last while mainly due to a serious lack of games but that looks like it's going to end soon.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,661 ✭✭✭✭Helix

Just has a play of this and mario kart. Mario is a little disappointing, tjough its mainly due to the 3ds thumb stick being awful. Far too much time wasted and jumps missed due to poor controls. The 3d is much the same as any other 3ds title, in that its best left well alone. The game itself is kind of a mario 64 lite, without being anywhere near as fun from the 4 levels i played. From my hands on its definitely the weakest Mario platformer nintendo has ever made. Im a little bit gutted to be honest.

Mk7 fares a little better in that its mario kart, and pretty much impossible to mess up. Surprisingly the 3d actually works, mainly because its subtle even at the mac settings. The gliders work well abd the tracks on show were quite varied ranging from land to sea with plenty of airborne bits. Basically its mario kart. Same as it ever was

The problem i had with mario kart on ds was it didnt feel like you were going very fast , hopfully with the 3ds being more powerful it feel alot better

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,661 ✭✭✭✭Helix

I didnt get the chance to change cc, so i was stuck on the slowest, which isnt very fast. Cant speak for the faster ones

    They're Go-Karts, not f1 racing cars.

i havent played the ds version so I dunno what its like but mario kart snes, 64, double dash and wii all had a pretty good sensation of speed so it's a reasonable complaint to make.

EDIT: Seems the review has been taken down on NWR. But I am sure there are other reviews floating around...

Just read my first (no spoilers) review over on NWR.

Sounds brilliant for a portable Mario game. Day 1 buy for me!
    Anyone else getting it?

Are there any shops around dublin doing per-order special with the game or anything like that?
Hope its no more than €45.99, that is the max I would pay... thats a lie :P

    Yay Mario!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,131 ✭✭✭Azure_sky

Definitely. That, Zelda and UMVSC3 all released on the same day. Time to start scrimping. I heard from Nintendo life that if you pre-order it from Game you get a free Mario pouch, the same with Mario Kart 7.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Happy with Joystiq's review too. Looking forward to it. :)

I'm going to move this to the Games forum for general discussion.

That seems a bit high to pay for a 3DS game. I have it pre-ordered on Amazon for €34.77.

Mario Kart 64 and Mario Kart Wii gave a brilliant feel and sensation of speed. Especially on the Wii. On some courses you would fly along at breakneck speed. It's important in a racing game. MK DS did feel a little slow at times. I would agree with him.

yeah I know, but in Game and gamestop most 3ds games are prices at €45, no wonder no one is buying them. HMV are always cheaper.

Bag pouch with pre orders? thats kinda mah. I hear everywhere else in the world are getting all sorts and we get a crap bag. Oh well.

    Cant wait it!

Wont be getting Zelda the same day. Kinda sick of Zelda at the moment, overload. So will get that at xmas or the new year, dont think they will run out of copies.

Definately picking this up - great month altogether [Sonic and Mario within weeks.... :)]

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Eurogamer's review is pretty gushing about the game (and I'm intrigued about the idea of a
mystery second campaign that's much harder and more than doubles the length of the game
    ).

IGN were pretty positive too (
    9.5
    !)

Day 1 for me. I'm beginning to wonder if the early reviews actually got to see the second half of the game, or if they were just eager to be the first out with (incomplete) reviews.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,485 ✭✭✭Mr. K

Oh wow. I kinda wish there were a few weeks between this and Skyward Sword!

    Bump.

So can anyone tell me the best/cheapest place in bricks and morter Dublin to pick up Mario tomorrow? I am not buy via internetz.

Whats the avg price point for the game?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

I'd say €40 will be the average. Expect HMV to be a few quid less, and Gamestop to be a few quid more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,276 ✭✭✭readyletsgo

Do HMV have any extras with the game? I saw GAME are giving away 1, ONE fridge magnet with each game, pretty crap extra. And others say above that there is a Mario plush hat or a bag or something with the game.

In the US or Oz they are getting a Mario Tanooki key ring! its only small but, WANT!!!!!!!!

God I cant wait to get this!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

€45 in Gamestop.... I checked at lunchtime.
It's almost a given that it will be cheaper elsewhere.

Ha! Yeah you could do that but I want it for paying for the game in a shop not from ebay :D

Wonder why people are not as excited on getting this. Guess Skyrim, Skyward, and all the other amazing releases happening this weekend are taking away from it, and cause its a hand held.

Girl I work with is refusing to buy it cause its not a 2d Mario game . I told her I will give her a shot of SM3DL next week and I'm sure Ninty will make a new 2D 3DS Mario in 3D for the likes of her in teh coming years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,439 ✭✭✭Josey Wales

I just got an email to say my order has dispatched from Amazon. I'd say it will arrive on Monday.

I checked it out on eBay. It's nice, but there's no way I'm paying €10 for it! Free seems like a more appropriate price.

I'd say it's a combination of factors. We take Mario games for granted, handheld stuff rarely gets much attention and the 3DS isn't too popular!

Ya, definitely. Also there's not much to talk about, since it's basically the same game and mechanics for the last gazillion years! I wonder if there's more new suits beyond
the Tanooki suit and Koopa suit
in the game. Same plot, perfect controls, not much discussion needed!

I'm not sure what the cross market is for owners of both Wii and 3DS, but we've had two 3D (Galaxy) games and one 2D (NSMBWii) game, so personally I'm burnt out on Mario.
