Sure kids are good for ordering around for no good reason....

Most kids that I know haven't been planned but have never been regretted
F*ck tests like that, or personality types, the most natural thing in the world is to have a ride and kids are a result and if the cavemen could do it then maybe 21st century soft fools like us could manage it

Well if our parents asked the same question, we might not be here... ya know...

I have one son but I'll never plan to have anymore unless I'm settled in another country.

If people didn't have kids, the world would be a very lonely place indeed.

Just think - you post on Boards. Then ten minutes later, you have to reply to your own response... and quote it.

Then again. You could post what you want without fear or reprisal from the Mods & thanks whore till your heart's content, so as an argument, it's a bit of a grey area!

    :D

I don't even have enough commitment to finish that test (quit when I saw there was a page 2). I'm fairly sure I couldn't take care of kid for 18 years then.

Well obviously most people are good parents, I just wondered how many people thought about it and decided that they wouldn't be and decided not to.

Kids are at least an 18 year project, unless you are prepared to commit to that amount of work, then you need to really carefully consider it imho.

I know that while I'd love to have a son (sorry ladies, I wont lie, I'd love a daughter dearly but when I think about it, its always a son I imagine) I am not prepared or even in the situation to make that kind of compromise....

At the moment I'd say it would be a disaster if I was to have a child as I'm no way fit to be a proper father yet. I would love to have at least one though, preferably in my late thirties.

Seeing the cruel amount of child abuse and neglect that I see in my job in this country far more people should be asking themselves this question!

I assume that this isn't about people who can't have kids but opening a debate on whether people think logically through the aspects to make a decision or just head along into it.

It's not for everyone and with improvements in contraception it is becoming a choice not to. People should accept people's decision not to if that's what they want. I know of a couple who get all sorts of questions and stupid remarks from virtual strangers because they made the decision to focus on their careers, travel and generally enjoy their lives together.

Easy solution. Just have loads of kids but have nothing to do with them. That's the best of both worlds.*

When I was pregnant with my first child (having been told that I could not have children) the attending nurse told me that 95% of first pregnancies were not planned, therefore for the majority of people its not about logical thinking or making a decision. But this is just my opinion. I was not intending to open a new debate. I'm just trying to point out that there are numerous situations that people find themselves in.

Bull****! Kids should be independent by the time they're 8. We should feck them out in the wilds, the way the Spartans used to do. That way, they won't become insufferable teenagers by the time they're 14, thinking they know everything. They'll either know everything (worth knowing) or be dead. Win, Win.

After years and years of disliking everyone.elses kids in the past.. Im sitting here typing this post on my phone in the Cork maternity hospital just watching our latest addition to the family.....

I was trying to score as low as possible but I answered the one about whether I thought children should be hit or not honestly and said no. I also made the mistake of saying that if a child is sad the best way to handle the situation is to ask what's wrong. I ended up getting 23%. That's way too high.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,077 ✭✭✭✭bnt

I took the quiz (38% = No), and was interested to see some of the questions were on the selfish reasons people say they have kids e.g. "to look after me in my old age". I hope anyone saying Yes to those questions was marked negatively: the idea of having kids just to solve one of my possible problems is horrendous - yet I have heard people say things like that in general terms. "If we don't all have kids, who will pay our pensions?" You cannot be serious, right?

I decided at a fairly young age that the population of the world was too high, and I wasn't going to make things worse. I now know it's not quite that simple, but the basic idea remains valid. We may have dodged the Malthusian bullet several times, but the mathematical logic is implacable. In this age of mass migration, we can't ignore what's happening in Asia and especially Africa, where populations are still rising quickly. Globally, we're heading for a wall, like a scene from one of those Final Destination films: It's not If, it's When.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

―Oscar Wilde predicting Social Media, in The Picture of Dorian Gray

I would absolutely hate to have a child at this point in my life but I think it's something I'd like to do down the line. Right now, I wouldn't be prepared to give up my freedom... And I really like sleeping!

Personally, I don't understand why people want to have kids. Don't people realise that humanity is a plague to this earth and needs to be eradicated once and for all. The only way to do this in a way that wouldn't amount to mass genocide is simple to chemically sterilise everyone through the air and water supply. It would take ~80-90 years for humanity to just die off.
