Would be nice if Italy went into this game with the bare 8 points (i.e. no bonus point wins against Rus/USA), and Ireland have 13 after beating Russia with a bonus.

So if the IRE/ITY game turned into a 9-9 scrap after 35 minutes their heads might drop as they realised they aren't getting the 4 tries needed.
We then take the game in the second half and move onto 17 points ahead of Australia on 15.

    So Ireland 19, Italy 9.

    We're a better team. We'll win. I'd say by about 20 points.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,209 ✭✭✭Cypher_sounds

I think we will win by one or two scores.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,026 ✭✭✭B0X

We cant underestimate the Italians. They'll try take thee match to us like we did to Australia today. A good effort by the forwards again and we should run in a few tries though.

    3 tries Ireland, 2 conversions, 2 penalites = 25 points

    1 try Italy , 1 penalty = 7 points

    3 tries Ireland, 2 conversions, 2 penalites = 25 points

Is screwing the 3rd tier with the fixture not enough, but now they get a point less for a try or a penalty... have they no shame in Dublin;);)

I think it will be tight in first half as per usual in these types of games but I think Ireland's backs will break through and score tries in this one so I can see us increasing the score late in the game as Italy realise their world cup is over and slacken off.

    Ireland 32 - 9 Italy

    Ireland: More ; Italy: Less.

Dear God, please let this be true, yours etc, a bloke who denies you exist.

    Ireland 35 (4 tries, 3 conversions, 3 penalties) Italy 20 (2 tries, 2 conversions, 2 penalties)

I think Ireland will get a bonus point win, its in an indoor stadium so hopefully the backs can be unleashed. I think Italy will do well though, not well enough to win.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 852 ✭✭✭blackdog2

Italy will certainly do something, but I think that Ireland have a good chance of doing more, and certainly our moreish attitude will help us here.

    So I say

    Italy Some : Ireland More

ireland to win by 7-10 points

The Italians are a tough nut to crack in the Stadio Flaminio but away from it and the partisan atmosphere i'd say they're vulnerable. Judging by the support over there its gonna be like a home game for Ireland. Get on top early and they'll go through the motions. Ireland 29 - Italy 12.

    Easy win for Ireland.

To win by 20 points. :D

I hope this is real forwards match- I love matches where the forwards' skill is on full view
    (like us against the Aussies)

I don't think it will be easy but we will win. We know what's at stake.
Italy, don't have the same level of depth and their fixture list is more cramped so we should do it... it will be close for 60 mins I reckon though.

I just hope we get over the line without picking up big injuries. I'd sooner see is win by a point with a full squad for the QF than to win comfortably while losing key players.

I don't know about the rest of you... but thinking of the possibilities ... a 6 nations run to the final... is scaring the crap out of me... my heart won't be able for these next few (hopefully) games.

    I dunno.

I am normally a positive Ireland supporter and support them all no matter how good/bad they play.

But, I have a bad feeling about this. This is Italy's chance to move up a level in world Rugby. They brought us to the wire in recent games and they will certainly be motivated to do something here.

Ireland can win this, but it is all dependent on how DK motivates the team. They must approach this quite ruthlessly.

So, being positive, I go for 4 tries, 50% conversion success and 4 successful penalties. Italy, 2 tries, 1 conv and 2 penalties. (If Buckley is playing, add another 3 successful penalties to Italys tally)

    36 - 18

potentially Mallet's last match as coach, i expect a serious test from them, i just hope whoever starts at 10 has his kicking boots on and we dont encourange them into the game by not taking our chances.

It could either be a 29-9 or a 15-12 but we will win.

Italy have averaged just 14 points a game against us since 2000 while we have averaged 32.5. In my opinion it would be the equivalent of us beating the All Blacks if Italy were to upset us.

I think if we bring anywhere near the same intensity as the Australian game we should have no problem in racking up a 20 point win.

Italy have made strides in recent years but are still well off the pace of the big guns

Think we should play a nice patient game utilizing Healy and the backrow.
Hopefully parity at scrum and lineout. Then three/four subs in second half to maintain intensity.
If the game is close with 20 to go and we have our form players holding up well and fresh legs on I have confidence we can close it out.

Anyone know if Italy caused Australia as much trouble in the scrums as we did?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 355 ✭✭Persiancowboy

At the risk of stating the obvious the following factors will be crucial:

    Who wears the no. 10 shirt for Ireland....I think we should try to play the territory game early on by kicking to their 22;

    Points could be at a premium so we simply have to get a decent return from penalty kicks;

Keep Tony Buckley away from the pitch. Italian front row will murder him in the scrum.

Keep our discipline...Italians will do their best to drag us into a dog-fight.

Keep our nerves to a minimum.....for an experienced team we often show far too many nerves in big games and end up trying silly moves and/or dropping passes etc.

Ireland is a much better and stronger side that Italy and if we are to be taken as serious contenders to progress in this competition then this is a game we simply have to win, and win well.

On the basis that we're up for it, Ireland by 12-15 points.

In the second half they did.

It will be essential to pin Italy back in there own half, I'd be confident that if we play the majority of the game in there it will be a comfortable win given that Italy don't have the counter attacking ability of any of the top nations

I reckon O' Brien and Ferris will go to town again, Heaslip will have his work cut out with Parisse and will do well to break even

Italy wont be a walk in the park but I really rhink we should be landing our Bonus point in the first half and keeping it even stevens from there on in.

Ireland have so much more talent in their safe than the Italians do.

    20 - 9 to Ireland.

I think it will be a very competitive game. Eire 32-Italy 20

    When is it on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,802 ✭✭✭bluefinger

The Australia game will have done wonders for the Irish lads confidence. I'm hoping that the fact that they've nothing to prove after it will mean we won't suffer the usual big night jitters. I'm more concerned about Wales at this stage, and I still haven't forgiven them for scoring that dodgy try against us in march.

    Italy 15 Ireland 12

Well, considering the match is on at the Otago stadium which is basically indoors there is no weather to speak of. Perfect for running rugby and there will be no excuse for Ireland not tearing Italy apart.

    Ireland 33 - 10 Italy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,033 ✭✭✭unitedrover

When we meet them in the 6 Nations its normally after getting destroyed by France or something and we still scrape a victory. After three brilliant victories our confidence is at a high now so we should win this. We havent lost to them in 6 Nations so theres no reason we should lose in the World Cup.

It looks like we've no injury concerns at all.

"Manager Declan Kidney reported no injury concerns in the camp after the victory, with Paul O'Connell, Gordon D'arcy and Tommy Bowe fit for selection to take on the Italians."

What team would anybody have starting?

    I'd (personally) go for:

    Healy
    Best
    Ross

    DOC (Cullen on at 50)
    POC

    Ferris
    SOB
    Heaslip

    Redden
    ROG

    Earls
    Wallace
    BOD
    Bowe
    Kearney

Bench: Court, Cronin, Cullen, Leamy, Boss, Sexton, Trimble

A LOT depends on the ref imo, Mr Kaplan has done Ireland no favours in the past and we will need to be ultra-aware of his handling of the breakdown & in particular the scrums. Having the other Saffer ref for the Russia game was probably a help, they will handle both areas in a similar way although Kaplan is a lot more finicky.

I actually think Sexton must start because we will beat Italy with running rugby, if we allow it to be a tight 5 scrap it's a lot more in the balance.

It helps us more that the weather won't be an issue and as long as our front 5 show up we'll be ok, if the Italians get early dominance up front we could be in bother...

Optimistic hat firmly in place, Ireland by 10.
