New MMA Film: Warrior

I love Tom Hardy and this looks a lot more "realistic" than the other MMA movies which have floated about. It looks to me that the fight scenes have been shot to look like a UFC event.

However........ why is there a guy being WWE style Power Bombed in the opening seconds of the trailer?

What think ye? Will it actually be a decent MMA movie?

It does happen in MMA, albeit very rarely

Tom Hardy is quite the method actor so I'm sure if he's going to train his arse for the film and immerse himself in MMA, he'd want a killer script which accurately portrayed MMA.

It can't be any worse than the films starring real MMA fighters! :D

    Absolutely!!

Also, we've all senen the Rampage PowerBomb, where he lifted Arona from his back. But the one in the clip is more like a WWE one like this.............

I can't recall off the top of my head ever seeing one

looks way too WWE/Rocky. Was that Kurt Angle at the start?

And Nick Nolte playing another washed up estranged father - please!

I don't train UFC, but it looks like something a wrestker could do against a weak sh1tty single leg.

COULD do............... he coudl also do a Jake 'The Snake' Roberts style DDT should the opportunity arrise........ very unlikely though.

I dont know what a DDT is but i dont think it would work

Ive seen a DDT in a couple of fights. Counted as a spike & a foul though

I was listening to a radio interview a while ago and Skrape from TapouT was talking about going to the ESPN Live studio to film a mock-up episode of it for this movie. So they're are obviously some good MMA people involved. However I am a bit skeptical of that powerbomb.

Kurt Angle will probably just turn the thing into a pantomine tbh.

Looks a lot like The Fighter but should be a change from "Never back Down"

    The power bomb was ridic.
I know Sanovitae was just jokign about, but there's a huge difference between triangle slams and power bombs. The spin/flip lift being the difference

I didn't watch it all but some of them examples were silly. Suplex, full nelson, slams. These are all stadard wrestling moves not pro wrestling moves. THe sleeper is a RNC

There's a new MMA film out next week called Warrior, starring Tom Hardy:
    Warrior%2BNew%2BSexy%2BPoster.jpg
Considering how poor previous MMA films have been (Never Back Down was The Karate Kid with MMA and a hateful protagonist, Redbelt was amazingly boring and awful), I didn't have much hope for this film (even despite Tom Hardy). But its at 82% on rottentomatoes and 71% on metacritic so it seems like it, at least, has a good story. I dont know how the fight choreography stacks up though (and despite a good story, bad fight choreography would probably ruin it for me), so anyone seen it yet?

Getting an 8.4/10 rating on IMDB too so certainly seems worth watching. Link Will hopefully check it out over the next few weeks.

Haven't seen it but judging from the trailer it looks like they've at least put some effort into writing a script. Todd Duffee is in it too, right?

Isnt Kurt Angle is in this aswell, as a kinda Fedor inspired character....

    kurt_angle_warrior_b.jpg

Interesting to see if its any good

I hope the fights are at least realistic. A lot of people are calling it "A Rocky story", which is good in one sense because Rocky is an all-time classic movie.............. but the boxing scenes weren't exactly realistic. And if I was watching this Warrior movie, unrealistic MMA would probably take away from my enjoyment of it!

Anyway, i'm going to see it on Wednesday (I hope)

    That's some statement.

Rocky is a genuinely fantastic film that won Best Picture, Best Director and Best Film Editing at the 1976 Academy Awards and was nominated for seven more.

yup, and warrior is better than it in every way imo

I had a real problem with that Power Bomb being in the trailer. I hope they don't portray MMA in that vein. Power Bombs don't happen in MMA, especially not the one from the trailer.

Rampage's was nothing like the one in the trailer, the one on the trailer was like a WWE power bomb. And that scares me!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,661 ✭✭✭✭Helix

im no MMA buff at all, but i enjoyed the fight scenes tremendously. they're very brutal affairs for hardy fights, and more rocky like "getting the crap pounded out of him before he gets the technical upper hand" for the edgerton fights

most of the fights have about 2 minutes worth of footage at most, and the power bomb was certainly out of the ordinary based on the rest of it

Hoping to go see this tonight. I've heard nothing but good reviews, and after watching the trailer the powerbomb wasn't as bad as I expected.

Apparently Greg Jackson was involved as an advisor on the fight scenes, (so it'll be all lay'n'pray ;)... joking) and Nate Marquardt & Anthony Johnson are involved playing other fighters so fingers crossed it's a solid film. Better than Never Back Down, Red Belt etc.

Tom Hardy travelled to Jackson's camp in New Mexico too as part of his preparation for the film.

Is that Josh Rosenthal as the ref?

great film. the story is very good and would cross over for people that never watched MMA in their live's

Just dont dwell on the kurt angle fight scene's

Agreed... Kurt just couldn't resist throwing a few extra belly to back suplexes in.

Overall very good though. Of course the fight scenes were not that realistic, every KO was a higlight reel and every slam or takedown was like Jon Jones on turbo. But overall I thought it was very well handled. The only bit that irritated me a little was
that Hardy's character fought 2 rounds with a broken arm. Not only would it have been unlikely that the ref wouldn't notice in the first place, but surely he would have called in the doctor to check on it when Hardy was fighting 1 armed
    ?

But overall a cracking film, even my wife enjoyed it and she hates MMA. Excellent performances from the 3 leads.

I went to see it on wednesday. Very good performance by both actors. Rumble Johnson looked HUGE in the movie. Excellent film.

Was that Phil Baroni commentating btw?

went to see this last night and thought it was great.

i agree that some of the fight scenes were a bit ott
and hardys arm was a bit unrealistic - surely the fight would have been over after that. plus edgertons character was getting pummeled in every fight he was in - he shouldve been totally out on his feet by the time the final bout started. the worst injury he had was a minor cut under each eye.

great story though a really enjoyable film.

Went to see this over the weekend. Really enjoyed the movie and all the fights etc are handled very well.

Powerbomb and highlight reel stuff didn't bother me so much. I didn't like the fact that the fighters were called "Animals" a number of times (ok maybe it was only twice) and there were a few mentions of people having the potential to be "Killed". Was hoping it would showcase the sport more than portray it as a kind of savage freakshow.

Apart from that though, very good and even the missus liked it......well, she disliked it less than most MA movies.

    Wow!..

Initially I thought the movie was dreadfully slow and thought 'this aint no Rocky movie'.. Damn right its not, it knocks spots off Rocky.

    Highly recommended.

Thought it was very slow but it picked up at the end, I don't think it comes close to Rocky. I was a bit let down over all the hype about this film.

Woah woah woah, lets not get crazy. I liked the movie too but that bit where Adrian wakes up in the hospital and tells Rocky to "WIN!!"........spine tingling stuff :D;)

Nick Nolte in the hotel room.. Nick Nolte has to be a model for a best support Oscar nomination for this movie.

And 'Tommy' (don't know the actors name), stunning performance. I wonder will we have a sequel telling us Tommy's story?.

Agreed. I've said before that the 2 scenes that stand out most are not the fight scenes, but the ones with Tom Hardy and Nolte in the Casino and then the hotel room. Very powerful.

I hope there isn't a sequel tbh. From an MMA point of view it was pretty good (if not great). Could they do another without spicing it up with a death, drugs cheats or fight fixing?

I'm with you there on the sequel, I'd love to see it left where it is.

Its just that I think there's a story about Tommy which Hollywood could make into a sequel.

Everything about Brendan and the Dad was more or less put out there, although I'd have loved a few more shots of Bren's wife prancing around in her knickers (very delish!).. But Tommy is pretty much a mystery...
his experiences in Iraq, his PSTD and the Military Police coming to the stadium persumably to arrest him for desertion?
    .
my OH who is a softie anyway left with a tear in her eye at the ending of the movie
    .

I have the attention span of a goldfish, and no patience at all and found the first half mind numbingly boring but damn I'm glad I stuck it out.

Unfortunately most of the MMA themed movies have been about the spectacle of MMA rather than the sport. They still love to portray it as some sort of Underground spectacle.

I've really been turned off MMA movies. NBD was Karate Kid 2.0, NBD 2 was a douchebag dujoir [really the only characters that were sympathetic were Michael Jai White's and Todd Duffee's characters. The rest were a pack of sociopaths] Red Belt tried to be deep and philosophical like the old Kung-Fu/ Samurai films of the reluctant soldier/warrior but it makes absolutely no sense because BJJ is all about competing. Plus the whole conspiracy really killed it. I was expecting the Cop student to turn out to be alive and in on the whole thing.

It's definitely an entertaining film, but it is no Rocky.

The last fight in particular makes Rocky III, IV, V and Balboa look like documentaries.

I thought it was a Rocky beater - then looked at Rocky last night, and Rocky rawks :p

    Still loved Warrior though.

Finally got around to seeing this, it was awesome!! Really really good.

The fight scenes were as realistic as you'll ever get for an MMA movie if you ask me. They were really well done (Even if there were some silly situations like
Tom Hardy's arm in the final fight
    .

But in all honesty, one of the movies of the year.

The major thing for me was.........
Nick Nolte in the hotel room.. Nick Nolte has to be a model for a best support Oscar nomination for this movie.

Boom! Nolte was incredible in this! One of the finest acting performances i've ever seen.

Nolte probably won't get an Oscar nod because he only really ever plays himself - the washed up Alco with a good heart.
    He's good at it though!

It's worked for Al Pacino for his entire career though.

Only difference perhaps is Nolte has never put on a Latino accent :pac:

Just got to see this last night, brilliant brilliant film. Albeit a bit too much of the Tapout boys, they must have funded the whole thing! Anyway, great performances from the actors and great MMA action. Ya you have to make it look exciting so throw in an 'ol powerbomb but the majority was realistic and very well done.

I was a bit worried about Kurt representing a type of Fedor character but they pulled it off well. Pity not more non MMA people are talking about this.
