The race for fourth

Aside from the title race, I'm interested in who will finish 4th. I think most people agree that United, City and Chelsea will probably finish in the top 3. Even if you don't agree with that, you can say which of the three following teams is likely to finish above the other two.

There's three obvious candidates vying for 4th spot. Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham.

Obviously the best way to analyse each team's chances is to comparing their squads. The ability of the respective managers(Wenger, Dalglish and Redknapp) will be the other obvious factor.

    Arsenal

    van Persie

    Chamakh

    Young
    Gervinho
    Walcott
    Arshavin
    Chamberlain
    Arteta

    Benayoun

    Ramsey

    Wilshere
    Song

    Rosicky
    Diaby

    Frimpong

    Gibbs -- Vermaelen - Mertesacker
    Sagna
    Santos - Koscielny ---- Djourou ---- Jenkinson

    Szczesny

    Almunia

    Fabianksi

    Liverpool

    Carroll

    Kuyt
    Bellamy
    Suarez
    Downing
    Maxi
    Gerrard
    Adam

    Shelvey
    Henderson

    Lucas

    Spearing

    Enrique
    Agger -- Carragher---
    Johnson
    Aurelio
    Skrtel ---- Coates
    Kelly
    Flanagan

    Reina

    Doni

    Tottenham

    Adebayor
    Van Der Vaart

    Defoe
    Pavlyuchenko

    Bale
    Parker
    Modric
    Lennon
    Pienaar
    Sandro
    Huddlestone
    Kranjcar

    Assou-Ekotto
    Dawson
    King
    Walker
    Corluka
    Gallas
    Bassong
    Kaboul
    Rose

    Friedel

    Gomes

    Cudicini

Poll added. Although Liverpool are currently slight favorites, I think Arsenal will nick it with Liverpool and Tottenham fighting it out for 5th.

    'Other' does exist.

The vast majority of people would agree that Chelsea are unlikely to finish 4th.

I agree with you it's unlikely but not impossible.

IMO Chelsea have started the season adequately.
They'll probably get better as the season goes on and AVB's methods start working.

There is also the small chance that some of the elder statesmen in the dressing room don't take too well to a young manager who's never played pro football how to play.

Having said all that i still think Chelsea will finish top 3:D

Fair enough but your opinion would be in the minority, hence the structure of the poll.

    Pains me to say Liverpool,

I am getting great value out of there recent demise , as being the only non Liverpool fan out of a group of 6-10 good mates.

Baffles me every year the sense of believe there fans have in the team, manager , club.

They will be good this season but I would be surprised to see them any where near the aforementioned candidates for the top 3.

    Too hard to call imo.

When last season ended i thought this season would finish:

    1 City
    2 Chelsea
    3 United
    4 Arsenal

Then we had Tevez having his annual family rubbish and Arsenal losing Fab and Nasri then City bought Kun...

When season started i thought :

    1 City
    2 Chelsea
    3 United
    4 Liverpool

As Arsenals owners wouldn't give adequate funding but when the transfer window ended...

Manc clubs are setting the pace with Chelsea keeping tabs whilst showing glimpses and Pool with huge amortized signings 'as they now call it' sniffing about. :D

Any of the presumed top three and the three teams in the poll could go on a win/poor streak to enhance/diminish chances which leads me to think it's too early to call who will do what.

I would probably pick Pool for fourth if the top three were guaranteed to finish there but the Stoke result with them missing glorious chances smacks of previous year failings somewhat so i won't write Arsenal off quite yet.

Not mentioning Spurs as i don't think they will finish higher than sixth.

I'm reading this that you think Liverpool have a better chance of finishing ahead of the 2 Manchester teams that they do Chelsea.
    Is that right?

That's how I read it anyway, it wouldn't make sense otherwise.

No I was not saying that.

Its the yearly travel to the promised land , but time and time again coming home empty handed and then being surprised /gutted about it.

I hear it every season from the lads and a few on here ,

"Looking good for a challenge this year"
" At least , we will win some silver wear"
"Great Squad this season " (Granted this is the first season in a while I would some what agree with it)
The list is endless I could go on al night.

I could post the Boom, bust cycle pic but I am not trying to be antagonistic so I wont but when I seen it I said to myself ,

" Its so true its somewhat tragic"

I'm pretty certain Liverpool willl finish above Chelsea. The new signings have settled in really well, and as far as I'm concerned losing to anti-football Stoke is merely a blip.

Chelsea have not performed well and I can see the annual Chelsea dressing room revolt before the season is out.

Liverpool are going to make a serious run at the title and will just tail off towards the end.

4th place will be the battle of the Londoners.

You must be a Liverpool supporter to have this kind of belief.

You've pointed out one of the main reasons why Liverpool won't finish ahead of Chelsea in your post. Chelsea can churn out victories whilst playing sub-par whereas Liverpool couldn't win ugly.

    Liverpool
    Chelsea: 10 Points
    Liverpool: 7 Points

Yeah we're really under performing especially in relation to Liverpool who have dropped points to the footballing giants that are Stoke and Sunderland.

If your going to talk ****e at least try and be funny or have an argument that has a bit of intelligence in it.

Well the under performing chelsea managed to draw at stoke despite being denied 2 clear penalties and hitting the woodwork.

What is this annual dressing room revolt, I don't recall this happening before. Enlighten me:confused:

Man for man chelsea have a better squad with better strenght and depth along with a mix of experience and youth. I see liverpool behind chelsea and I think liverpool have a real battle with spurs for 5th IMO

This type of post is what the boom /bust analogy is all about .

You have your red tinted glasses on ,

Stoke play football and play it well at that , delude yourself with the ideas because they are anti football Liverpool lost.

Lost because as a team collectively you were not good enough.

There is some good individuals in the Liverpool side , as a team there not good enough to mount a title challenge, coming in fourth will be a big ask as Arsenal should never be discounted and Spurs show up when you least expect it

It's between Arsenal and Liverpool. Chelsea, United and City will take the top three, undoubtedly IMO.

Writing off Chelsea is silly. Excluding United for bias reasons, Chelsea have the better defense and City have a better midfield and strikers. But I think if Fernando Torres can hit form he will do serious damage with Chelsea, especially with Mata in the side.

To get to fourth: I think Arsenal have a better defense than Liverpool or Spurs, with Vermaelen fit. I also think their midfield and striker are better than both other clubs. It's just keeping those two guys fit which never happens. If it does happen I can see them finishing fourth reasonably comfortably. I don't think Spurs have a chance really, look a really poor outfit so far this season. I'd say with the likely injuries that Arsenal will get it will be a tight race between themselves and Liverpool. I'd say Arsenal will shade it come May.

I know you are not being antagonistic to be honest.:)

But in saying that i haven't heard too much of the stuff you quoted during the past 2 summers.

Granted a few got carried away the summer after Liverpool finished second think ing they could push on but it was always going to be an uphill task losing Alonso.

I'd be very happy if Liverpool managed to finish 4th this season.

I'm deadly serious, Liverpool have finally got the decent investment they haven't had in years. We have an experienced manager who has won the premier league before. We have the star of the copa america, a big huge tank up front who is waiting to catch fire, Stevie Gerrard is yet to come back, we have width, we have the best goalie in the premiership, we have a host of fine prospects coming through. All is well in the Red Garden at the moment.

We're gonna make a serious stab at the title, just wait and see.
