Unable to Install Windows 7 on New Rig

Hey guys, could really use your help here. Ordered a new rig from hardwareversand last week and it arrived this morning. I had it sent without an OS as I wanted to install Windows 7 (64 bit) on it myself. But I just can't do it.

My original method was to burn the Windows 7 ISO onto a DVD-RW disk (just the one disc) but when I get to the "Expanding Windows files" loading part, it'll usually get to 30-35% and then fail, telling me that it's corrupt. I've tried different ISO files and attempted to burn the disc at a lower write speed (read this could help) but I've had no joy. I've also tried doing a USB boot from an 8GB MP3 player I use as a mass storage device several times today but I get the same thing. Microsoft's official USB boot software doesn't work for me. I'm almost finished downloading an official ISO from Microsoft to burn onto my DVD-RW now but I'm afraid the same thing's gonna happen again.

Worst case scenario, it's a hardware issue with your build.

I think it's probably, hopefully more likely, that you have a hinky/problem install disc. The burn didn't work properly, for whatever reason.

Mind you, do you have a spare empty HDD?
Perhaps you could throw that in your new rig and see how it goes.
Or if you have a spare PC and spare HDD, you could try installing the OS on that machine with your current disc.

BTW, you could try burning on a DVD-/+R disc instead of the re-writeable one. Benefits may be negligible but it's worth a shot. :cool:

but first use check out the CD make sure it's ok using a tool to calculate the checksum

I would say your ISO is off, if it was hardware it unlikely it would fail at the exact same point on two different mediums.

as soon as i read the OP i remembered this happened once when i was doing an install of XP, the copying files install would stop at 20% every single time, i initially thought it was bad media, but it installed perfectly on another pc, so then i thought bad sectors on the hard drive, temporarily swapped out the hard drive from the other pc, still no joy, so then through a process of trial and error and elimination, i ended up swapping out the DIMMs, and lo and behold- install went perfectly on the original hard drive with the original media.

so, just to be sure, i put back in the original DIMM memory modules, one at a time, as in- put back in one dimm, install went fine, then put back in the second dimm, install kicked out at 20%, it took me over two days to figure it out, but it was one of the more unusual errors, and i haven't come across anything like it since, but i just thought i'd share as it may be a remote possibility.

of course i've come across bad memory modules since, komplett were decent enough to RMA a set of 2GB dimms i bought for my laptop, this was six months later when i started getting frequent bsod's. even though only one dimm was bad, they requested i return both to them for testing, and sent me out a new set, perhaps harversand will have the same retuns policy...

+1 for the DIMMs . I had a similar experience and it turned out to be the RAM.

Install kept failing at the exact same point. Took me a few days of trial and error to figure it out.

This is pretty standard across the board, if one module in a kit is faulty then the entire kit needs to be returned.
