    I'll vote for him.

For a suspected murderer he's a likeable chap.

Any link to prove that he's running?

    You're supposed to this OP

Sinn Féin is expected to name its candidate for the Presidential election this weekend.
Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness and former Stormont minister Michelle Gildernew are understood to be among the contenders.

I actually think it would be quite amusing if McGuiness got elected

All those people who wanted a real Irish rebel in the house ( the park) will be chuffed to bits although the chattering classes will 'not be amused ' :pac:

What makes him better than the rest?

I'd put Higgins miles ahead of him as being more suitable. Hell even though Norris wrote that disgrace of a letter id still put him as more suitable.

No proof I'd imagine, however I will say this, around Derry there is plenty of talk and there is one very infamous incident that has been attributed to him, which I won't repeat here but I'd imagine that quite a few will know which incident I'm referring to.

All he has to do now is say he's gay and he'll be a shoo-in.

exactly id' say he is probably linked with a lot of the stuff the IRA did , as others have said no smoke without fire etc. he'd have a very good chance of winning as up against political lightweights and a few unknowns i.e. mary davis and sean gallagher

Personally I like the idea of Martin McGuinness as president just to see Enda Kenny and FG having to deal with him.
Apparently he is good enough to be deputy first minister in Northern Ireland but FG will be telling us he isn't good enough to be president of Ireland.

I don't vote SF but I am tempted...

Sadly its probably more 'popular' to be a suspected murderer for a cause then be gay.

Higgins won't be the only one miles ahead of him, it'll be like a national marathon to the nearest docks.

Can't see myself voting for him but he always struck me as an engaging and nice enough person despite his history.

Would it matter? Even if such proof existed, we'd be told that there was a 'war' and 'innocent people get hurt' and how unfortunate it all was, and that - if anything - the victim should be apologising to McGuinness for getting in the way.

    boring...

With all this pontificating about his record in the troubles don't dare mention why the young man from Derry joined the IRA, or mention his integral role in the peace process and post GFA politics, a role which recently led to a presbyterian minister calling him a "great leader".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,514 ✭✭✭decies

If he runs will he deny for the next 25 years that he ran in the first place.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,019 ✭✭✭Badgermonkey

I actually find his public persona quite likeable.

The substance of the man and the hidden side of his character are a different matter entirely however.

I couldn't vote for him, too much SF bullsh1t baggage.

Why did some join the IRA while others joined the SDLP? Good question. Perhaps some people are more comfortable with murders and executions than other people.

John Hume managed not to join the IRA, didn't he? Where did he go wrong? I'm sure he could have racked up a few dead women and kids if he set his mind to it.

Pontificating my hole. Typical republican obsfuscating by you i think. I admire the man and he surely is an intelligent likable chap, but there is no doubting the fact that he has blood on his hands.

I've attended lectures where he has spoken and he has great charm. I just dont think he is a suitable modern day candidate.

He's too grizzly. Maguinness has a more grandfatherly, werthers original sucking murderer aura about him. More mass appeal.

Anyway.. I doubt they expect him to be in with any real chance. They probably just want to have a name in the hat. How the hell is he gonna do the whole campaign thing while still serving in Stormont?

I imagine Gerry Kelly or someone will take over as acting deputy first minister while he is campaigning
