Ive a massive soft spot for Springers, Lurchers, King Charles Spaniels, Golden Retrievers, Chocolate Labs.....

But ultimately, my favourite TYPE of dog, is a Good Boy or a Good Girl - I couldnt care less if he or she is a mix of all breeds, missing a leg, an ear, an eye, scraggledy, deaf, blind, smelly, ugly (actually I love an ugly dog!), bow legged, scrawny, small, large, a bit dim or super smart - my favourite type has always been that boy or girl with a soft temperment, who loves me unconditionally, snuggles up with me, keeps me warm, makes me laugh and is the essence of why we love our dogs!

None - all of mine are different & adorable. But the biggest surprise has been my Greyhound. If I had known how nice they are I would of had one years ago.

I prefer bigger dogs like German Shepards ans Dobermans although I do have a soft spot for Kerry Blues and Fox Terriers. But my favourite breed is the Rhodesian Ridgeback.

For looks its between Bernese Mountain Dogs and GSDs or maybe Malinois.

But for personality and sheer goofyness you cant beat greyhounds IMHO. I wouldnt have looked twice at a grey until I started forstering, wonderful dogs that just ooze affection and personality :)

After the akita, any giant breed. Love them all, they're so easygoing and gentle, from wolfhounds to neopolitans.

Yea he's the cutest thing ever, and the biggest lapdog ever:pac:
    He's neutered though I'm afraid:)

    Thanks.

If you love Akita you should watch the movie about Hachikō's. It was based on a true story in Japan adapted for the Americans and staring Richard Gere. Amazing story.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 252 ✭✭Andromeda_111

I've a Bullmastiff, he's 8 years old and still scrambles around like a 6 month old. They are beautiful gentle giants.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 989 ✭✭✭piperh

I grew up with GSD's so will always have a huge soft spot for them. Actually have a picture of my now 18yr old holding my GSD's lead while in the buggy at 12mnths old and its walking perfectly alongside the buggy. Staffies have a special place in my heart to.

Kinda strange ten that my last dog was a patterdale and the 2 i have now are mutts, 1 a wolfound x and 1 god only knows:rolleyes: All of them rescues.

I've known the original japanese story since I was about ten, I prefer the original to the movies (haven't bothered to watch it), especially as it, like Marley and me, is beginning to create problems for the breed. Always been in love with the breed but finally got my hands on one last year. Couldn't bring a different breed in now without having one at least

Did you go for an American or Japanese version?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,974 ✭✭✭Chris_Heilong

The Alaskan Malamute of coarse as I own one
Titanatsea.jpgSo surprised how easy going they are and as long as you meet their needs they are really well behaved.

next fav would be Akita, Siberian Husky, GSD and Shiba Inu.

    Thanks,
it is true they are big but there are some people out there trying to cash in on over sized ones that they lable Giant Alaskan Malamute, usually these can reach up to 177lb(77kg) but this is the flip side to the teacup yorkie and the larger sized dogs usually suffer from health problems.

In saying that I would like Titan to grow a bit more, he is 40kg now at 9 months but they are said to grow until 2 years so who knows.

I love the look of a rottie but i don't think id trust one around kids and my nephew would be over often enough.

So in that case either a springer or a collie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,763 ✭✭✭Knine

Rotties are just as good with kids as any other breed, in fact they are generally more tolerant of kids playing rough with them then the toy breeds would be.

My problem has always been that there are just too many dogs of too many types and different characteristics so it's impossible to pick a favourite but my long list is:

    Beagle
    Bernese Mountain dog
    Doberman
    Foxhound
    Hungarian Vizsla
    Japanese Spitz
    Labrador
    Lagotto Romagnolo
    Mini Pin
    Miniature Schnauzer
    Norwegian Elkhound
    Samoyed
    Setters (plural)
    Shelties
    Siberian Husky
    Sky Terrier
    Tibetan Terrier
    Westhighland Terrier

Now I just need to figure out how many dogs I need to own at once to get through them all in my lifetime without the danger of becoming a crazy dog lady :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,954 ✭✭✭homerhop

Springers hands down for me. Beautiful temprament and just such energetic dogs when out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,634 ✭✭✭TooManyDogs

I reckon you just can't beat a mutt! That's my favourite, I love guessing what breeds are in them, wondering what they'll look like and what traits come through. Like my springer x JRT, terrier instinct to hunt and catch prey but has a soft springer mouth so doesn't hurt them!

Goofyness is the word. Mine's either busy being a rug that breathes, or chasing us around the house and sliding all over the wooden floor for 5 minutes, before it all gets too much and then its back to being the hearthrug again.

Very tempted to get another now as greys are so more-ish and there are so many that need homes.

Springers and Wolfhounds also get the big thumbs up too though!
