Who are the Kilkenny Normans? I did a google and the first hit was a link to an article citing you guys as one of the biggest clubs in the country! :-p I think our J5 are playing them this coming weekend.

Also, any sign of the J5 fixtures?

Yeah our 3rd's (made up of lads who are less commited shall we say :)) lost out narrowly to them in a friendly a few months back. Was nice to be seen as one of the bigger clubs in Irish Rugby :D

Think they were only set up late last year.

Was surprised to see them there tbh. Are they not a bit far out for Metro? Dont think they'd be up to competing in Leinster League though. Maybe when they have a couple of years of competitive rugby behind them.

Whats the story with the Warriors this year, just realising they are missing. EDIT, just noticed from the other thread they are entering J5 this year.

I think the above links are out of date as there are going to be 2 teams from St. Marys in the J4 League this year. The same team from last year in J4 Section A & last years J5 champions who will be in J4 Section C.

There will also be a St. Marys team in the J5 league.

Hope they sort out the website soon.

Here's one for you. Who'd do you think would win from a J2 leinster league team and J4 metro section-A team?

Most (not all) of the Leinster league teams have a seconds and thirds. The seconds play in J2 leinster league and the thirds play in regional J3 leagues.

Can a mod edit the link in the OP, cheers.

    Hey Tim,

If I understand you correctly, you reckon Metro J4 Section A teams are of a similar level to Leinster J2 teams...

The reason I ask is because Tallaght's 1st XV have left the Metro J4 league and are playing Leinster J3 this year.

We finished 2nd to an extremely good Sutton team in Metro J4 last year (section C i think), and I understood that leinster J3 was a step up for us but it sounds more like a side-ways move if I understand you correctly.

Ah... the level I am talking about is actually the second league for Leinster. Dundalk, Edenderry, Skerries etc all have their 1sts in the Leinster League and their seconds in a "seconds" league.

    Isn't J4 not a really low standard?

    Our tiny club play J1?

Not always - you'll often see players at J4 who would be more than capable of playing J1, but don't for whatever reason (or do, under a different name!). You get young players coming up from U21 and older players finishing up who no longer want to commit to the training that "higher" up teams often require.

They're a new enough team, we played them last year. They're based just outside of Thomastown. It's a tough place to find - you have to drive across 2 or 3 fields to get to the pitch and a few cars needed a hand getting out - and that was on a dry day. I'd have big concerns if a player required an ambulance.

They've moved to a new pitch apparently, not sure where though.

Lost 7-0 last weekend to them with our J5 squad. Big strong pack, like to play around the fringes of the breakdown. Didn't help that we were reffed off the park either, but they were having a good grumble about him too! I don't think most J4 teams would have much issue with them. Good sound blokes too.

Hope they've got somewhere handier; it'd be good for them have some decent grounds. We put a few points on them last year, but it was at home for us and in the middle of the 6N and they had problems getting a team together on the day. Seemed liked really sound lads.

Seapoint 80 - 6 Monkstown. I think Monkstown were struggling for numbers last night but still turned up today. Dont want to sound patronising but they could easily have just cancelled instead so fair play.

Yeah, he's ok now. It ends up he has snapped the a/c ligament so there's no broken bone but still 6-12 weeks on the recovery front. If you know the Stones student doctor tell him cheers for the help on Sat!

What happened with Mary's J4 last Saturday Vs. Greystones?

Underpowered Mary's??? No way they should be losing to Greystones 54-0

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 538 ✭✭✭mjquinno

guiness j4 lost to navan the weekend 20 - 30. we had 14 men for most of the match due to injury and 13 for a 10 min for sin bin.

Fair play to navan, hopefully we can get revenge on our home game. Enjoyable match.

Nope, we were almost full strength. Two lads out but the replacements are just as good. Stones were very very strong. We never even made it into their 22!

Have only played a total of 26 minutes of Rugby this season and with my inability to train or make a lot of matches due to college i'd say most of the season will be like that. We have a fairly big squad this year which is brilliant considering we lost 4 or 5 of our main players from last year! So since I'm not training and not fit it will be hard to get game time and that's only fair but I hate being stuck on the sideline! Was so frustrating against Clontarf last week. A game we should have won and I don't think the tarf lads would disagree. Ref was awful and I think he ended up frustrating both teams with his inconsistent and unintelligible calls but refs don't decide games and we really should have put that one away in the first half!

Looks like Terenure are the team to beat at the moment but still loads of games to be played yet! Think it will be better for us to play J5 to than getting well beaten playing J4 as was shown last week we need to learn how to win games when we are in control!

Wow. I have to say that is a shock result IMO.

'Stones must have 'found' a few players as their results previously haven't been as outstanding as that

Trust me, we were just as shocked!! We knew it'd be a very tough match but nothing like as tough as it proved.

Strongest team at J4 level I've seen in a long while....

Stones had the same team against Clondalkin bar on of the centres. There are 3 lads that they have got out this year that probably are a higher standard, but they only train once a week and can only play saturdays.

Its still mostly the same group of lads from last season.

I wouldn't agree. you got a try inside 5 mins and nothing for the rest of the game. and this despite being camped on our line a few times. bad ref calls for us too.

Our defence prevented the chances been taken also. we defended well most of the game and that's all i am saying. wouldn't agree you deserved to win. was tight game but we took our chances and defended well. But you have the home tie to make amends later in the year.

We only had 1 sub for our first two games so that had nothing to do with the result. The injury occured in the second half when the game was well and truly over.

Clondalkin must have loaded up against Stones because that result was only 27-22 and our same team beat them 33-10 on Sat.

Personally I find it unfair that Greystones can have no team at J2 level yet their J4's go out and put 50+ to nil scorelines on the opposition every week. I'm presuming that the team that played the first two weeks was different to the current team. If they can beat the current league holders 54-0 and Coolmine, who challenged for the title last season, 52-0 then they are good enough to play J2.

This debate rages every season. Mary's and the gick have been accused here of loading J5 teams in the past in a bid for silverware.

I'd be more interested in why the league holders weren't promoted.

I thought the purpose of the split after xmas was so that the top 2 from Phase 2 get promoted.!?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,263 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

I don't think that's a promotion as such, it's just a different section of the same J4 league. We won our league last year, but weren't promoted to J3. I don't know why not, we (the team) wanted to go up a level if possible. I don't know who made the decision - club or branch.

Because Marys have a J3 team already and the J4's won the J4 league so the only place to go would be the J3 league. Plus the fact that J3 league is a Friday/ Sunday league would mean players not being able to play for a J4 team in the J3 league.

The J5 team that won the J5 league last year got promoted to the J4 Section C league. Mary's now have two J4 teams and a J5 team.

Unfortunately the reality of Junior rugby is that some years you have "trophy hunter" dream teams.

Yeah, there are three sections to the J4 league, A,B and C. Each of A and B have two pools. The top three teams from each of these pools go into the top pool with the bottom three going into the second pool and so on so that you have basically 4 pools post Christmas. Mary's won the top pool of Section A last season but playing J3 rugby this year was never an option due to a mixture of already having a J3 team and players not being available for Fri/Sun matches.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 365 ✭✭ColmH81

I know the playing J2, J3 or J4 is ultimitley down to the club itself, but the different pools in the J4 should be based on success the previous season.. .

From our point, Shanners, I'd asked that we be entered in the J3 league and was told no, by the club..
