    Hi everyone,

Today we're officially launching a new App designed to help cut your energy costs. The Appliance Calculator, a popular resource on our website, has been given a smart makeover and has made the transition to smartphone.

This handy tool will estimate the cost of running an appliance by using one of these easy to use features:
    • Review all your home appliances for a complete breakdown of your energy bills
    • Search for an individual appliance
    • Check out the big electricity users in your home at a glance
Best of all, the App is free to download (so no costs to calculate there) from the iTunes Store and Android Market (just search 'Appliance Calculator'). You can also scan in the appropriate QR code here.

To celebrate this launch, we're giving away two Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 Android Phones.

To be in with a chance to win one, simply post a comment below. If you draw a blank and can't think of anything, why not post an energy tip to benefit your fellow boardsies, or an energy efficiency joke to keep them amused (keep 'em clean though...). :)

Winners will be drawn at random, in accordance with our competition T&Cs, and the competition closes at midnight on Sunday next (18th Sept).

    Best of luck,

    David.

Dont leave the immersion on if its not needed! Our bill was halved recently when we started turning off the immersion (was left on all the time prior to that!)

To prevent a draft coming in the front door, hang a curtain & pull across in the evening times. Makes a huge difference.

put a baloon up your chimney and make sure your windows are adjusted so that they close and seal properly , then turn down the thermostat and to compensate, pop the Three Degrees on your CD player and you will get that warm feeling still that's up there in the 70's !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,694 ✭✭✭Dingatron

I'll give that app a go.

Put consoles and TV on an extension lead (surge protected ideally, just in case) and plug that lead into the wall socket. Plug the sky+ box on its own into the other wall socket. When not using TV/Consoles, turn off the extension lead socket at the wall and leave the Sky+ one on to record any scheduled TV from your planner.

One device on standby is better than 2-5!

Due to the current economic climate the "Light at the end of the tunnel" has been switched off.

I'm gonna need a Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 to ring someone to come and get me ;) lol

Put your pet cat on a lead to save electricity at night by turning off the lights and use its night sight to lead you around. To make life easier, get used to using the litter tray yourself also.

How many members of U2 does it take to change a lightbulb?

Just Bono. He holds up the lightbulb and the world revolves around him

If you get an extension with a switch you can switch your tv off instead of leaving in standby!
