Bertie upset by 60th party reports, says Westlife star

BERTIE Ahern is upset with how his 60th birthday celebrations were portrayed, his son-in-law said yesterday.

Westlife star Nicky Byrne -- who is married to Mr Ahern's daughter Georgina -- defended the former Taoiseach and his family's decision to host a glitzy birthday party for him in Croke Park in Dublin on Friday night.

He said the GAA headquarters was the "spiritual home" of the Ahern family.

Confirming that Mr Ahern had been dismayed by media coverage of his party, Byrne said: "Of course he is. How could you not be upset by what is going on? It would be hard not to be. It's hard for him to watch and read this sort of thing," Byrne (33) told the Irish Independent.

"It's hard for him to be in a position now, where he is not at a level to defend himself because he is not in public office any more."

The boyband star said there had been just "one protester" outside Croke Park for the function.

"One protester -- when you are listening to radio stations encouraging people to do it. This was about two girls throwing a party for their dad, then all of a sudden people are wondering why it's in Croke Park," Byrne said.

"Croke Park is the spiritual home of the Ahern family. It's been known for years, even before Bertie was a minister, how important the GAA and Croke Park was to him. So it was perfect to have the party -- and anyone can rent out a room there."

Despite the negative coverage, the chart-topping music star said Mr Ahern had "enjoyed" the evening and that "95pc of the public" knew his father-in-law "was a good guy".

    Expenses

"Ireland is in a bad situation at the moment. Is that all Bertie's fault? And the world -- that's all Bertie Ahern's fault too? It is what it is but it's hard for me to watch. But you have to move on," said Mr Byrne, who got on stage to sing the Monkees' hit 'Daydream Believer' at the bash.

Mr Ahern is at the centre of controversy after it was revealed he had claimed €270,000 in expenses since leaving office, more than any other Taoiseach.

He also aroused fury last week when he appeared in a TV3 documentary, 'The Rise and Fall of Fianna Fail', describing some members of the party as "a useless bunch of good-for-nothings".

His former partner Ms Celia Larkin, who did not attend Friday's party, has advised Mr Ahern to "shut up", as his views continue to attract controversy.

Now boys and girls, we upset the man - should we apologise? LOL :pac:

I love the bit in that report "the chart-topping music star said Mr Ahern had "enjoyed" the evening and that "95pc of the public" knew his father-in-law "was a good guy"."
...Surely the Westlife star can't be that deluded ...can he!

95% of the Irish people think Bertie's a grand lad according to Nicky eh?

He's right! Nicky Byrne is a guy who, along with 4 mates, has been able to sell 11m albums worth of regurgitated musical feces! Nobody knows more than this guy that the public are retarded!

The papers reported this in such dept because they knew it would pee people off. As far as i am concerned the papers are as big gangsters as bertie.

As for nicky. I imagine he is hopeing to score a hit in the sack thats why he commented. If they broke up his book would be interesting

God help him, the poor aul creatur.......

There are hundreds of thousands of people on the breadline in this country because this oaf was at the helm when taxes and government income was at an all time high and he just heamouraged it all into perks and mercs for his cronies. He rode the wave to the top and raped it over the hill.

It's time he was put out of our misery.

Hardly surprising, it's going to take a lot more than 3 years for over a century worth of an attitude of entitlement (and all too willing public to support said attitude) to go away.

...But, but between his 40,000 euro trips to Nigeria and all his state pensions (one for every four years served) do ya not feel sorry for the man who is suffering terribly with his memory loss problem?
Sure I'd hate to be him, the poor man!

    :D

(Note. I'm posting this from Crumlin Childrens Hospital and a waiting room there.
A great hospital (and staff) that has been starved for many years due to the antics of he and his FF cronies while they lined their own pockets.)

"But you have to move on" said Mr. Byrne. Fuck you! easy for you to say that with millions in the bank! how dare he

I don't think we should 'move on' until that crook is behind bars where he belongs.

And as for his 95% of the public knew he was a good man remark-that just goes to show how out of touch Nicky Byrne is with the reality of what ordinary people think in this country.
Everyone I know hates Ahern and would like nothing more than to see him lynched in public.

Dublin taxi driver 20 minutes ago (wife, child and I going from Connelly station to the hospital) said exactly the same.
He read the bit in Indo' and said "Christ, in that case I must always have the other 5% in the car all the time!"

Might not be in public office but he does his very best to make sure he's still a public figure. From whoring himself out in wardrobes for seedy tabloids to appearing on TV3 to slag off people, the crook just can't help himself.

I have no problem supporting any action I can that makes it happen. I've been on marches against the last Govt. and I'd support any public action that brought him and his cronies to justice.
And what actual harm is it doing anyone to call for justice to be served against the likes of Ahern? that plays right into hands of crooks like him to say that.
They want us to forget what they've done to this country and 'move on' so that they can ride off into the sunset with their fat pensions and perks happy that they're untouchable. We're idiots and we deserve nothing better than the self-serving venal criminals we got in the FF Govt. if we do that.

I couldn't give you an exact number but I just rang Nicky Byrne and he said 95% of the public, so i'll go with that!

People who make excuses for Bertie and bury their head in the sand (the "I think he's a great man - he did so much for this country" types), and people who call for lynchings and buy into everything the Indo tells them (recycling phrases like ''the fat cats'', ''the ordinary man on the street" and "taxpayers are paying for it")...I lump you all in the same bucket. That bucket is marked 'idiots'

BTW I can't stand Bertie either, never could.

You took the words right out of my mouth.
FF and co just want the people to shut up, go away, forget and then so they can also re-spin more of their newly rehashed propaganda for their cult masses.

Sorry Mr Ahern and FF - some of use are not playing your game.
We just want you gone from existence.

I too, will continue to speak at protests as previously.

Aside from my obvious gripes regarding Bertie (in general), what family has a "spiritual home"?!! Have they no inkling how pompous and stupid that sounds?!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,414 ✭✭✭kraggy

Biggins, why don't you start a blog on your hatred for FF?

It gets a bit tiring seeing threads created by you and posts in other threads by you that just have to include FF somehow.

I dislike Bertie Ahern as much as anyone else. I wish he was locked up in prison for the rest of his life. I really do. The cheek, audacity and delusional comments by him recently make me sick as a hospital, but there's no need to constantly go on about it.

Hmmmm....GAA headquarters...a shining and expensive monument built off the hard work and free efforts of people all around the country to the main benefit of a small few.

There is something fitting about that being his spiritual home.

Actually if you had bothered to check, you might have noted that since the last general election, this is the first political related thread of any kind that I have started. So please show me where your "seeing threads created by you" are - because unless I am gone stupid and blind, I fail to see them in any numbers - if any!

I agree with your feelings towards the man but "going on about it" ?
Its in our complacency that others complain that we are doing nothing - yet when some others occasionally comment on such things that do indeed deserve comment, that for that too, for we speaking up, we the public just can't win with some it seems!

Damned if we do - and damned if we don't!
...And the same people doing the damning are oft times the same people scratching their heads wondering why we are in the mess that we are in, in the first place!

(Off-topic: Update: Our child (6y) just went under the gas at 11. Knocked out so she can get a full bodycast change for her Scoloises.
Again, the staff up here in Crumlin are exceptional and great. They deserve every bit of support they get. We are now waiting around till they are finished in theatre and till she comes out and recovers.)

It really is like something out of the emperor's new clothes. How does Byrne not expect people to be angry? Who's this 95% of people? Ahern is more delusional that Gaddafi, it really beggars belief so it does.

    Who's this 95% of people?
I guess that means 95% of people that Nicki Byrne and Georgina (is that her name?) Ahern spend time with - i.e. the Ahern family, friends of the Ahern family, former popstars, Malahide residents maybe, Fianna Fail politicians, authors/people who are successful in publishing, and their friends. Not such a wonder that 95% agree in Nicki Byrne's eyes then

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,050 ✭✭✭gazzer

I thought it was bad enough that Nicky Byrne has become a millionaire by being a backing singer in a mainly covers band but to come out defending Bertie like that (family or not) shows the guy is a gob****e who really doesnt get it that people are so angry at Ahern and what he and his party did to the country.

Would Yas all lay off Bertie, Judge Jury and executioners yas all are

He won that Money fair and Square in some horse racing, and just cos he doesnt have any evidence of this winning bet doesnt mean it didnt happen. It was an unfortunate incident that his dog ate the winning ticket after he cashed it.

As far the lodgements? You try juggle brown envelopes with differeing currencies and amounts in them With only the words "SWAG" "LOOT" & "HOT" written on them and you would be confused too!

And as for the whip round and the free house. Well only last night i was offered the deeds of 3 properties in the city centre. Owner heading to oz. As he was running out of the pub he mentioned something about Jingling mail wasnt sure what that was in reference too.

Wait.....does Bertie's annoyance at our reactions to him make him a "cribber" ? And does the fact that it's Nicky speaking on Ahern's behalf mean that Ahern is actually a "cribber on the sidelines" ?

Now if Ahern follows his own "advice" from a couple of years back.......
