Seeing the photos of 186 in Kilkenny got me thinking... do steam locos have exemptions from the requirement for CAWS or TPWS?

No, they've been fitted with the appropriate set up in the form of track circuit shoes and in-cab equipment.

Do they have event recorders? I seem to recall that was the excuse for binning the 181s.

CAWS atually isn't fitted for steam locos, there being more than one man in the cab to see signals and any changes as need be. TPWS is however fitted for working in the North as per the quare hawk laws they have to follow :)
