My bf is always cheering on Wayne Rooney in a Man Utd jersey, but wanting him to fail in an English one. When I try to confront him about it he fobs me off in a 'you're just a girl, you wouldn't understand' kind of way. Would someone care to enlighten me? Bit schizophrenic innit?

Because Manchester United didn't occupy Ireland for 700 years. Silly but there you go

Edit: is it 800 now? I lost count

    QED.

I don't cheer on either, don't see anyone can feel they have a genuine connection with a team from a city/country they've never been/lived in.

I support Millwall as its my home team and England as I was born there.

Watching England tear itself apart, club by club, is probably far more interesting in watching every 4 years when they work together to get cheated out of it by Italy and break into a fit of tears like little babies.

Well obviously not they'd just lose in the penalty shoot out

At the start of any WC or EC I dont mind if England do well or not but then BBC and ITV start going on and on and on about how great they are and the fact that this particular England team is the greatest Football squad ever assembled in the history of the sport. And you know by then I want them to lose because if they won you would never ever hear the end of it. The Republic would probably be forced into holding a national day of celebration.

I quite like the English but not all the crap that surrounds their football both at club and at international level. Im fairly happy supporting my own club here in Ireland in my own country.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,844 ✭✭✭jluv

So if Rooney plays for the country that has caused us problems for 500 years, how can her BF support him in his club team? (I don't have an issue with any of it just asking the question);)

And the Irish media don't hype up the Irish team?

I'm probably the opposite, would cheer the England team on but not much interest in the club sides. Certainly if they were up against France, Germany or Italy, 50-50 with Spain. No rational reason I'm afraid. Also helps they're generally the underdog in those matches:D

Remember being gutted when they lost to Germany in Euro 96!

Because the English national team consists of all English players? You definitely can not say the same about the Premier League teams in England.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

They do imo but that is the thing, I assume you are a Ireland supporter? you don't tend to see things when it is your own team

    Wasn't always that way.

How do you explain someone in a man utd top shouting abuse at say Rooney because he is wearing an England top? By the way irrespective of how many English/non English play for clubs, they are still English teams.

I can't understand Irish people getting all worked up over a club from a city in England which they have never been too. In fact it annoys me. Someone sitting sullen faced because Man Utd got beat. Do they come from Manchester - No. Do they know anyone from Manchester - No. Have they ever been to Manchester in many cases - No.

And then they look puzzled when i say i don't support anyone from the Premiership.

Not at all. Watching Ireland play football is quite depressing.

The media don't hype them up. They just make a big deal out of every minor achievement because they understand that we have a crap team. Contrast that with the pundits in England who seem genuinely disappointed every time they fail to win the World Cup

You tend to find those who follow the likes of Manchester Utd, Chelsea etc hate the national side as it takes their players away from good sides and risks getting them injured for some tournament or other they'll never win.

(that is the right answer to this question, no?)

Surely it's the shirt the area represents that counts, not the players. The Irish national team were mostly Brits at one stage in the 90's, did you stop supporting them? Like bollocks you didn't!

In all seriousness, it is understandable that many people have a sense of anger or resentment towards England.

I don't however see how they can think that 11 men on a football pitch embodies everything English and thus everything that angers them!

Organise a protest in front of Downing Street, the Ministry of Defence, Buckingham Palace etc. Somewhere with relevance to their grievance. Increase awareness for your cause in a manner people can comprehend.

Don't take the frustration out on JT, Wazza, Lamps and the rest of the lads ;)

Because club and country are two very different things that's why. We have a country of our own to support so we shout for Ireland but there is no Irish equivalent of Man Utd/Chelsea etc so we shout for them without any Irish team being at the loss of any support

Part in bold - Why is it that people flip their lid when England do this? Ie, leading the qualification group, beating Wales etc. English fans and media are happy with this (because we know we aren't that good) yet this is interpreted as arrogance.

And on your second point. Of course England are genuinely disappointed when they don't win the world cup. As is every player and fan who's nation is in the world cup. From the Algerian to the Slovenian, to the Argentine. When their team is knocked out they are genuinely gutted. Why turn up at all if you think you have absolutely no chance?

Do take out ones frustration on "JT" and "Lamps" especially! Lampard is a busted flush, needs to be dropped for good.

Girls in Ireland support english soccer teams as well.

It's alright when you are 12 years old with school-bags and school-yard banter, but fairly ridiculous when you are supposedly "grown up".
My brother married a woman from Manchester and at the wedding I asked them about Irish fans going mental over Manchester United and they were polite, but I could tell they were kind of annoyed over Irish fans coming over and going waaayyyy over the top at the games. And being shattered like it was the end of the world when the team lost, more than the locals. Irish people with no life or hobbies.

In my humble opinion, if you are not from a place then you have no reason to get emotional over that place or team.

-Liam Brady: No Eamonn, we're playing a defensive game at home and yeah, it's uninspiring, but it gets...no, no, Eamon, it gets results!

-John Giles: I have to say Bill, I agree with Eamonn, the football is predictable and frankly, a bit boring-

-Liam Brady: No John, it's not, the way the team is set out and it's strengths an weaknesses-

-Bill Heirlihy: Ha Ha Ha ha ha ha...alright, we'll leave it dere.

I used to argue this very subject with my mates almost on a weekly basis (usually after watching whichever match we'd been watching), I have always supported the English national team or maybe 'supported' is the wrong word, but I've always wanted them to do well (not win mind lol - jaysus we'd never hear the end of it!)

It's definitley a case of "the auld enemy" and some just wont bring themselves to even contemplate the idea of cheering on Eng-gur-laand.

However, last years world cup brought an end to my argument,as long as the English FA pick teams based on celebrity status the national team will continue to fall short and not live up to the hype. Picking overpaid 'stars' isn't working,oh they'll all bleat on about the pride of wearing the shirt and the hurt of failure but they'll all be sunning themselves 2/3 days after been knocked out in the early stages and not give the fans a second thought, they've still got their mansions, cars, wags & endless bank accounts to nurse the 'hurt' they endure.

I bet if they picked an alternative national team from the Championship & lower divisions they'd have a group of lads willing to run their legs off for the cause and give their fans something to cheer.

Well we've another 9 months of cheering our heroes on before we don our "hate" hats in the build up to Euro 2012

    :D

Scotland are a similarly small country but Celtic get 50,000 every week.
