...is on SS2 now and it is class.

They are dissecting his free kicks after the break.

By reading a kickers body language and not the ball, he can put the ball in the back of the net when lights go out as the ball is struck.

    It's ridiculous!

It's on SS1 at 10 again for those (like me) that missed it.

Wasn't there a part 1 to this or something?

    It's well worth the watch.

I dunno, I hope I haven't missed the other part if there is another part.

Didn't he only score something like 3 out of 57 free kicks last season? I prefer a more orthodox Beckham style, on target more often.

Ditto. I prefer a free kick where the kicker picks his spot, goes for it, nails it. None of that awkward swerve and hope it hits the target nonsense for me.

IIRC, while at Utd, Dennis Irwin had a better goals to free kicks ratio then Beckham. I'm not sure at what stage of Beckhams Utd career that was though

That doesn't surprise me, Irwin was very unlucky not to take more free kicks, he was very good at them.

None of them are a patch on Nicky Summerbee!

Actually David Hirst had a 114mph shot clocked once playing for Wednesday

I remember reading that Ian Harte was actually the deadliest player from frees around that time, far ahead of Beckham.

I'm going to watch it again now once this stupid tennis is over. The science behind it is unreal IMO...

Ronaldo has so many parts of his game perfected but I do wonder if he knows how exactly he is doing it. I wonder did he learn as much about his game from the show that I did.

Juninho ex Lyon is the best free kick taker of all time for goals and assists.

17 direct goals from wide positions (that one that whips like a cross)
Not sure what not wide positions was but it was something stupid like 40ish
    Assists were fairly high irc

he also had that weird way of kicking that beckham has.

    source: infostats?

Best free taker I've ever seen.

C.Ronaldo is poor at free kicks. Alonso should defo be taking Real Madrids.

he's probably still one of the best around, scored a good few last season.

What's the point of this? If he gets his free kicks over 100 he's allowed to clean Messi's boots?

What's interesting about Ronaldo's free kicks is his technique. It's completely different to what anyone else has done.

    stupid tennis.

he uses the middle of foot with power, Drogba does it too. Its widly inaccurate.

Watch Juninho and Beckhams style, le Tiss has what i would call the normal style of placing the ball into the net. Beckham and Juniho are freaks they bend their foot and body in a strange way. And use the what looks like their ankle bone

They wrap their foot around the ball using the side of their foot, where those ugly grooves are on the Predator boot.

Yeah they turn their entire body and the run up is almost perpendicular.

tried it failed went back to hitting it as hard as a i could in the direction of the 1st man in the wall :p

Yeah Beckham's free kicks look like he is standing unnaturally on his left foot.

Roberto Carlos looks like he uses his whole body to follow through so he gets power. Looking at a youtube tutorial that RC gives about his free kicks, he looks to get forward spin on it.

Ronaldo looks to get all the power through his leg when he takes that longer stride as he is about to kick it. He also gets it to "float" and (ah, don't want to give away the programme) but when it floats, the wind and the seams or stitching on the ball has an effect on how it spins. It's why it's so unpredictable.

To me, both styles look different and then add in Beckham's free kicks. Three very different ways of striking the ball.

While drogba does run straight up to the ball like ronaldo, he still strikes the ball with the side of his foot.

Dani Alves and nani's free kick style would be more similar to ronaldo's (though they are even more inconsistent with regards hitting the target). The most unique thing about it is not the fact they they use their instep, but the fact that they do not follow through a huge amount after kicking the ball. It's a real punchy strike at the ball, almost looks like they are trying to kick the ball as hard as they can and then slow their leg down as soon as possible after striking the ball. Very unusual! The complete opposite to roberto carlos, who would follow though so much that his two feet would be well off the ground following contact with the ball.

Then again, David Beckham looked like he was going to twist his left ankle every time he took a free kick (and i'm sure a few young lads trying to emulate him did end up on their arse over the years!) , so maybe there isn't one "textbook" free kick technique to be followed, different players develop slightly different approaches that work for them

Carlos would cut across the ball with a lot of power, hence the massive follow through.

Which means his whole run up would be different to Ronaldo's. To me, his free kick comes across as completely different to Ronaldo's. Different approach and different technique in execution. The one similarity is placing the valve of the ball towards them...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,558 ✭✭✭✭dreamers75

**** ronaldo brilliant free kick thread :D

Ronnie and drogs seem to hit with the middle of their foot with power and well its like a lotto free kick.

Becks and juninho seem to curve their body to hit it with the inside of their foot. Which imo consistently delivers the best free kicks and proven by stats :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,202 ✭✭✭el dude

With his natural skill, ability and technique, he'd probably score way more if he hit the ball normally, instead of trying to be a flash twat all the time.

What you dont see from Ronaldo's free kick stats is the amount of times the keeper parries it to a Real player. Although i do think he should be scoring more free kicks to add to his usual 50 goals a season :D
