Eddie Murphy to host surely will be better than Chris Rock and last year's team of James Franco and Anne Hathaway

Eddie's main competition was Oprah Winfrey :p

Eddie Murphy ?? Can you imagine if they'd gotten him to host it in 1983?

What a different show that would be

Eddie Murphy is a deeply unpleasant man who hasn't been funny in about 12 years.

Walked out of the Oscars when he didnt win and didnt bother to see how the rest of his co-actors got on. I wouldnt ask him also for not being funny and also not showing respect to the academy. He should learn to grow up.

just get billy crystal or steve martin out of the cyrogenic freezer already and be done with all the rumours

Steve Martin in the freezer? Hardly. He has spent the last year touring the world with his banjo - if anything, he's too busy to do the Oscars. Billy Crystal, on the other hand ...

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Love the Neil Patrick Harris reference.

Wish Steve Martin would go back to being funny though. He's wrapped up in writing serious stuff (books/movies) & playing banjo right now & when he tweets he's hilarious.

We could do with a Bowfinger 2 & I'd love to see a return to The Jerk

Anyone got any early Oscar predictions? I think Oldman has a really good shot at Best Actor for TTSS. Hard to believe he's never even been nominated. Other potential contenders at the moment are DiCaprio for J Edgar, Pitt for Moneyball, Fastbender for Shame and George Clooney for that Alexander Payne film.

The Academy are stupid and corrupt, they do not deserve respect.

Alexander Payne's The Descendants seems to be the one film getting major buzz and of course Meryl Streep will no doubt be a contender for The Iron Lady and I think Kristin Wiig and maybe Melissa McCarthy could get a nomination for Bridesmaids and I'm hoping Warrior fairs well

When it comes to Best Foreign Language Film the academy get it so wrong that I suspect that most of the voters wont have seen the films that they will be voting on.

Poetry is a 2010 film so wasn't eligible this year, though South Korea decided against choosing it to represent them last year anyway. It's so rubbish the way there can only be one film per country.

There's also an Irish entry- As If I Am Not There- apparently in Bosnian and starring Stellan Skarsgard?! Has anyone seen it? The Foreign Language category rules are strange.

It's supposed to be very average, of those I know who saw it none of them would be in a rush to ever watch it again. I'm skeptical as to how Irish it really is, surely there a film better suited to showcase Irish cinema than one shot in Macedonia and Sweden and whose original language is listed as Bosnian.

The Oscars are beyond a joke at this stage. Year in year out the same old tired cliches are trotted out. At least one of the actors up for Best Actor will be an old hand with numerous nominations but no wins and the press will start printing stories about how Jeff Bridges deserves to win as he's missed out so many times completely oblivious to the fact that the film he's nominated for was cliched, dull and unoriginal.

The best film, both foreign and main category will go to whatever is the safest choice that year,

I love how they say he's doing himself a disservice to ally himself with a notorious homophobe. His "Raw" DVD is full of homophobic slurs. Fuckin FULL. I haven't watched him in anything since seeing that.

Wow, didn't see that coming. Foolish decision on Murphy's part. I know he was probably pissed off over what happened with Ratner, but hosting the Oscars is a big deal. I thought he would have been gunning for a gig like that.

Ratner seems to have gone off the rails entirely. Putting aside all the politically correct bull**** surrounding what he said, he probably deserved to be fired just for being such an asshole. You'd think the AMPAS would have known what to expect when they hired him though.

Neither of them have done their reputations any favours.

Is Eddie Murphy still hosting? I saw on IMDB that hes not going to do it.

On a different note from now on who ever wins the best Animation award and the Best Short Drama award at the Galway Film Fleadh will qualify for consideration in the Shorts Catgory of the Oscars! Its one of the many festivals that now are considered important enough by the Academy.

The Artist and The Descendants leading the way in other awards so more likely the leading contenders for Oscars

    Source - Deadline
The 2012 Academy Awards has got the musical waterfront covered. Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer and Grammy-winning hip-hop artist and producer Pharrell Williams have been set to supervise the music for the awards show. They will serve as musical consultants, the first time either has done it.

I think the Oscars are a joke, more politics than anything else but it would be nice to have had an Irish interest in it (an Irish actor/actress has not been nominated for a long time I think).
The only Irish interest is the two nominations for Albert Nobbs.

It didn't even make the longlist which was out a while back.

Bit weird to see Jonah Hill nominated considering the dross he's in that's out right now.

obviously alot of politics involved in the nomination process, but how does Brad Pitt find himself being nominated? extremely average actor IMO.

Clooney is better but nowhere near top class, he is virtually the same in most movies. Kudos, he is a good director in fairness but as an actor he isn't hectic.

Sounds like its a popularity contest more than anything.

The movie the artist, how on earth can a movie with no dialogue be nominated?? Let alone how can the lead be nominated for best actor? It's baffling. Is it novelty or what?

First Oscars in a long time that I have no interest in.

    One bone of contention.

Why Gary Oldman for Tinker.... (Great actor, but let'd be honest, it's not an Oscar worthy performance) and no recognition for Benedict Cumberbatch who I thought was excellent in it?

I haven't seen Moneyball but it sounds like a bit of a joke that he has been nominated and Fassbender hasn't. It's extremely unlikely his performance was better than Fassbender's.
