'Haters gonna hate' + anti-intellectual

I want to say, that I 'hate' (there, I said it!) this term that has been copied from black American slang, and now being used in an Internet context.

It is usually used as a cheap shot by message boards posters to get out of properly arguing their case, and making the other person look inferior. Unless, of course, it is a case where someone is being a blatant racist or bigot, then using the term is half-understandable.

Anyone else 'hate' this term, and its growing prominence?

Anybody that uses it in an argument should be shot with balls of their own shít.

It seriously annoys me when somebody responds to reasoned arguments with the lamest sentence ever composed by mankind.

I always took in the sense that this image implies: http://www.gifbin.com/982918

There are people in the world who will hate you and what you do for no good reason. They are not rational, reasonable or willing to change their minds. You can't live your life to please others, so you have to accept that haters are gonna hate, and if you're a tubby effeminate young man you should be happy about that and keep your head high.

Problem is the phrase is usually used in not very serious subject threads.

I've only really seen it as captions for pictures of, say, a guy wearing a ridiculous hat with a devil may care expression on his face or what have you and took it to mean "Hey it's my hat, I like it, so your comments are like water off a ducks back" sort of thing. So I sort of like it. I think it's a good attitude for people to have and be proud of having, as far too many people are overly concerned with fitting in with the crowd and far too reserved about expressing their individual tastes or attitudes or opinions in case they are subjected to ridicule for not conforming to the accepted norms of their peers.

Haven't come across it too often in the 'cop out for an argument' use you are referring to. I'd say that's quite annoying alright. But the original meaning I am very glad to see being propagated in popular culture. Makes me feel all optimistic for kids nowadays and shit.

Problem is that it's generally used in response to inane ramblings or rantings - see most YouTube comments.....in which case, it is a perfectly valid response! If used in a serious argument, then yes I would agree with you.

But when used against internet people putting you down, "haters" is definitely the right word and "haters gonna hate" is the right response.

But you see, if the 'me' in question possesses some not so admirable qualities, do I not have a valid reason to 'hate'?

I'm mainly referring to threads on here where people use it to discredit somebody else instead of actually formulating a decent argument (often because they can't actually make one). It happens often enough on here.

That's the world today. Agreement is "worship", disagreement is "hate", disapproval is a "phobia". (Don't approve of Islam? Congratulations, you're now an "Islamophobe".)

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

If I know you, and have seen you doing bad things, to either me or others I care about, then I could legitimately hate you. Hypothetically speaking, of course.

I believe this one refers to hatred due to jealousy (as in, "don't hate me just cause you aren't awesome and beautiful like I am.")

As for the OP, I agree with those who say they don't mind it when used to refer to things about which others' opinions shouldn't matter. But often enough it's used to counter objections to bad behavior. e.g. a woman who only sleeps with married men - if someone like that says 'haters gonna hate' then yeah, that's annoying. I've never seen or heard it used as a counterpoint in an argument. That just seems stupid to the point of being sad, so I'd just ignore that and not be too bothered about it, as the person saying it clearly has more pressing problems to deal with.

Oops and on edit: what's a fixie? I googled it and the only meaning I found was a type of bicycle. ???

It's okay, if you say "swag" that's all i need. :D
    new to me

Freshest thing with the urban kids. Everything is "swag" now..."that hat is swag" etc.

Basically means cool, but can also mean stuff. As in "was just at Footlocker, got me a load of new swag, i hope the cops don't use Facebook".

I hate the 'gonna' part most. What's wrong with actual words? Even if you want to type like you talk it's wrong. I've never heard anyone actually say "gonna", it would be more like "goin' ta".

Another internet phrase I hate is 'fail'. I didn't even know I was taking an exam or I would have been more prepared.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,466 ✭✭✭Snakeblood

The worst thing is people who see something and go 'Insert joke about xxx here'. All that does is ruin the possibility of someone making an actual joke about it.

Or war. War is pretty bad too, I suppose.
