    Hi all,

I recently lost over 2 stone. (since March) The first stone was with weightwatchers and the second stone was exercise and healthy eating. In early July my hair started falling out and it won't stop! I went to my gp ( coz I thought it was the pill but she said it's not) I got my bloods done, they turned out perfect and she doesn't think its a big problem but it's really getting me down! Did anyone else have this experience with weightloss?

    Hi Oat,
Same thing is happening to me!! I've had gradual weight loss over the past year and a half, nothing drastic 1-2 lbs per week, since june my hair has been falling out, all over, no bald patches or anything, I'm not on the pill, just had my bloods done too, waiting on the results!! I thought it may have something to do with diet, cant really see where I'm missing any major food groups or vitamins/minerals etc thought it may have been down to too many almonds and or coconut oil, so have reduced these in the last week to see if there is any difference, I know any changes like that will probably take longer to have any effect....and god I miss my almonds!!
I'll let you know if I notice anyting... and I know exactly how you feel, its been getting me down too, doctor asked " are you stressed?"...ONLY ABOUT MY HAIR FALLING OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Though alarming this is a perfectly normal side effect of losing weight.

Losing any significant amount of weight disrupts hormones which in turn disrupts the usual cycle of hair loss and replenishment. You go through a normal cycle of growth and shedding but when it happens in sync due to any stress on your system, then you have a higher than average shed. It's called telogen effluvium.

Don't worry, it is growing back right now (you shed the hair because a new hair is pushing it out) if you continue to lose hair for longer than 3 months see a doctor because there could be something else going on.

Thanks for the replies, I feel a bit better about it now knowing that it is probably a side effect of losing weight. I'm gonna wait another month and if it's still happening I'll go back to my gp.

I have suffered with this twice. Once I lost five stone before I got married and the day I married I had a huge bald patch on the side of my head. Luckily I had long hair so it covered it well and the hairdresser did a great job. I tried everything, steroid mousse prescribed by the doctor, tonics from "quare barbers" etc. However I have again started to diet 9 years later and here it is back again. Its only this time that I have put two and two together about the hairloss. I now have started to take a multivitamin Centrum along with MOR EPA Omega 3 DHA aswell. Its starting to grow back now. I found the first time it happened that it grew back on its own anyway but I definitely think the supplements have helped both me and my hair now that I am losing the weight. Lost 3 stone so far (I had put a lot on when I gave up smoking 2 years ago) and got another two or so to go. Good luck and don't stress over it if you can as I found it makes matters worse.:D

Try Udos oil. I'm not really into complementary or alternative therapies and it worked for me. It'll be in the fridge of your pharmacy or health shop.

So glad I found this thread! I've been losing weight (veeeeery slowly) over the last few weeks and my hair has been falling out in clumps and I was so worried!
Now there's an explanation, besides stress :)
