Telly Ridden Ireland would dictate 16. Good sense wait till you are married.

I think 20 is definitely the threshold. But what's the point if you haven't found anyone it feels right with yet? (well... besides the obvious point) HOLD IN THERE, OP, (s)he is out there somewhere!

I personally wouldn't think anyone was weird for being a virgin. It would just mean that someone didn't want to lose it for the sake of it and the right time just had not happened yet - for whatever reason.
If someone was in their forties I wouldn't think 'weird', I'd think that it was sad that they hadn't had the right opportunity.

I hope you're not 14 haha otherwise ur crazy, unless it's for religious reasons probs...late 20's really depends on why/the person ur withs opinion. dont worry anyways it's always a bigger deal before you've done it :p

I know a dude who's edging towards 29 and still a virgin, and will remain so for the foreseeable future unless he gets a personality transplant. He's pretty socially challenged (ie stealing tips off tables because he feels that his friends overpaid the waitress) :S

I'm 24 and it's not that there hasn't been offers. It's more that I've not had the time of day for any interested in me, since I seem to attract chavs.

Granted, thats cause there's an abundance of slaggy chavs in Drogheda, but I'm in no rush.

wow. i was going to say more than 30 I suppose. but can't believe everyone's saying early 20s.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,670 ✭✭✭✭Wolfe Tone

Depends on peoples circumstances I guess, late 20s early 30s would be a bit weird.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 34,418 ✭✭✭✭hondasam

    I would say 21/23.

When youre young, it always appears everyone is losing their virginity very young but when youre older you learn thats not the case. Its hard to pick an age, if I was to meet someone now and they were a virgin, that would be weird but I think thats more about not being on the same level as someone.

It's weird to have a husband, a child and still be a virgin. I'm looking at you Mary!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,130 ✭✭✭talla10

Always get 'wierd' looks when i tell people i was 19 and it was with my now fiancee.

A lot of my mates bragged about losing theirs on 'holiday' with their family at 15/16 with some sexy english girl with massive tits who told them they were studs.

I reckon the youngest any of them were acutally losing it was 18 but to this day they still insist they 'lost it on holiday' stories are true!

I suppose once you get past your early twenties it's getting unusual, nothing wrong with it though. I mean personally I don't agree with that whole wait for the right person or til you're married approach, but each to their own. I think it's a bit sad that some people get to their thirties and have missed out on that whole experience (not just the sex but everything that comes with it), I think it's nice to become sexually active in your late teens when you're still capable of doe-eyed, heart-on-sleeve puppydog love and excited about living away from home and everything too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,762 ✭✭✭✭stupidusername

i dont get the bragging about it

I first tried to have sex at 18, with my boyfriend, but couldn't till much much later. it was a very big deal to me. now i don't even want to say what age i was.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,132 ✭✭✭Killer Pigeon

To some it may be weird but I don't think there's anything wrong with being a virgin if that's the person's choice. People shouldn't be forced into having sex just because it would look weird to be a virgin after a certain age.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,981 ✭✭✭ElleEm

I'd say it would be strange to meet someone over the age of 20 that is still a virgin.
I know a 27 year old girl who is a virgin, but everyone else (who has mentioned it) lost their virginity in their late teens.

I'm interested to know why people find that its weird to not loose their virginity while young, why is their such an emphasis put on it surely its the own persons choice, right time, right person ect, surely there are more important things in life to be concerned with rather than being worried what age you lost your virginity.

You for sure, haven't been to Drogheda then!
I fear for my three, still very young daughters. Honestly.

yeah there are loads but it's like if you havent then you have to lie about it...it's all annoying peer pressure i guess, the thing about it is when you're out of you're teens i really think no one cares anymore if you have or haven't because you're love life is more private. It's all competition when you're younger but yeah you're right - there's a million other way more important things

One on my mates who is 26 at the end of this year is not only a virgin but has never got the shift either! iv seen opportunities and hes let them pass, We've asked him plenty times does he not find girls attractive but he's assured us that he does but loses all confidence around women feel sorry for the guy!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭Knasher

I'm already considered weird, so this doesn't affect me either way.

I suppose the people who I've spoken to about it are all 25+. I think there is more pressure nowadays on young people to have sex, moreso that ten years ago.

    Sadly, it's true.
In Drogheda, it feels sometimes that it's weird if you've not had a family with two kids and a wife by the age of 21.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,028 ✭✭✭✭--LOS--

I don't really get the whole waiting for the right person thing either, I don't think I ever had that notion in mind but it did end up being with someone I stayed with for a long time but at the same time that's long over now and no loss. You're just setting yourself up for disappointment waiting for the 'right person'.

Lol, just as I was blowing out the candles of my 21st birthday cake (yesterday! :D), my bf's mom told me- "When I was your age, I was married with a 6 month old" - the look of alarm on my bf's face was priceless :P

    brb off to drogheda

id say 21 tbh after that it would just be weird telling anyone and would scare off a lot of people from going near you, i dont know anyone over 21 whod be bothered putting the effort in with a girl they probably wouldnt get the ride off for a long time.

I agree to an extent, and I'll add to my previous post it's not that I'm waiting for the person I'll marry or anything.

But just cause you aren't waiting for the perfect Mr/Mrs Right doesn't mean you should hop into bed with Mr/Mrs Wrong just to adhere to a stupid social norm...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,783 ✭✭✭Hank_Jones

I would think around mid 20's would be weird.

More due to the thinking that people should have found someone they wanted to have sex with by then.

After that stage you're going into oddball country.

Yeah I agree, it's not a big deal but it's not nothing either. If you want to have sex with someone who wants to have sex with you, go for it, but don't be completely casual about it. If you don't want to have sex don't, even if you think everyone else is having it or people are telling you it's weird to be a virgin at your age or if the other person in the relationship is pressuring you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,673 ✭✭✭AudreyHepburn

Why should there be an age limit on this? As far as I'm concerned if you're not ready, you're not ready. No-one should feel like they have to have sex just because they're of a certain age.

For me it's about being with the right person. I lost mine my late teens because I felt I had to and sometimes I wish I'd waited till I was with some-one I really liked. Now I wouldn't consider sleeping with anyone unless I really liked him.

Some mates that I'd hung around with for years thought it was odd that I was still a virgin until I was 23, even though they acknowledged I was never in a relationship that amounted to much or too fussed about one night stands.

Nor should you rush into just because 'everyone else is doing it'.

It's such a shame society views sex as something superficial and something you do 'for the hell of it'.

Maybe I'm just old fashioned but I really don't see the harm in waiting for some-one you really care about?

Because of all the people who, during a conversation about sex, turn to the virgin and go "well what would you know?" bringing the conversation to a train crash halt or continuing alienating said virgin.

Been party to that one too many times ^^

I don't think it's weird to be a virgin at any age really. Different strokes for different folks. It's a big deal for some people and they wanna wait or whatever, and I think that's fine.

No harm in that, but no harm in having just plain old sex either. As long as both people are on the same page and play safe there's nothing wrong with one night stands.
