Just came back to this thread to see what were the popular picks.
Sorry Starbelgrade for not explaining what a multitool is, but I see that others have explained it pretty well already.
An Archos PVR is a Mp3 player that plays video. Mine will record from a dvd player or cable box as well as load files from a pc. Its brilliant for taking on holiday.
Thought a lot of choices on here didn't really fit into the category of gadget. Kettle, desktop PC, toaster, dishwasher? They're not small,portable or quirky. Not doubting they're value, but they don't quite fit the definition.

Just make sure your SatNav is Garmin or anything other than TomTom as their UK and Ireland maps are very poor for this country.
TomTom worked well for me in France using W Europe map but when I changed to UK and Ireland map, I lost all my speed warnings and the maps are worse than what I had for W Europe.
Estate Agents tell me that the Garmin is best and they should know about hard to find places.
Dont throw your money away on TomTom

1. My callcard, you just put it in the phonebox before you make a call. You can buy them in most shops. So handy.

2. My cassette player, these used to be so expensive a couple of years ago, I don't go anywhere without mine now. It's a sony.

3. My cassette recorder, this bad boy is so cool. I can record music from the radio and then put the tapes in my walkman. So handy. Really cool.

4. My microwave, just got this beast last week. Been saving for nearly 6 months for. Truly amazing technology. I use it all the time.

5. My watch, it's actually got a little tv remote on it, good fun when your with your friends and you change the channels. They don't know what's going on. Never gets old. It's really handy too.
