In many sub forums on this site there are photo threads urging members to post photos of themselves.

What is interesting about this is the role of the thank a comment function.

It appears the better looking people garner more thanks from members than the less attractive ones, resulting in a 'hot or not' style contest.

Realising this, people post pics of themselves in hilarious poses, with babies, and various other props, in order to maximise their thanks.

I suppose they then use this for purposes of self validation.

Other people seem to post multiple photos for some reason; I still haven't worked that one out yet.

There are a few people who just can't stop posting pics of themselves. Bit odd alright.

    Women get more thanks too.

Are you really that bothered about it op. Did you post your pic?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,056 ✭✭✭tan11ie

Add your photo so we can thank you ;)

Ya one pic is enough. Why is there a need to post pics so often?

Also I think one "know your fellow forumers" thread is enough for the whole site. Leads to people posting in several threads.

Increase your chances of getting thanks in a photo thread by being a hot woman, or a man with a baby.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,116 ✭✭✭Salty

I wouldn't dwell on it too much tbh, it's only human that better looking people would receive more thanks.

The multiple photo thing - meh..why not like? I certainly wouldn't judge someone for putting up more than one photo. I've done it myself.

Creepy. Imagine posting ur pic and then getting recognised at work or on the street as that lunatic who says the most inappropriate things on boards.ie

where are these threads that you speak of?

Ass lickers and yes men get the most thanks also fairly average women with stupid poses get a lot of thanks.

That could be why you don't think it's weird. :D

If it was so obvious people wouldn't do it.

That would be admitting they were ridiculously shallow.

I'm under the impression that a lot of the people on boards especially certain sub forums know each other fairly well so there is nothing weird about throwing up a few holiday snaps to show your internet buddies. As far as the wacky photos go if you are going to throw something up here you might as well make it a good photo as opposed to "this is me drinking tea watching winning streak".

Putting up a photo every now and again is different from putting up several photos within a few days of each other at a time, and taking up nearly a whole page of posts:P Now that's ridiculous.

A case in point is the Know Your Loungers! thread. Initially, in this thread, a few of the men did their best to get the ladies and girls to show pictures of themselves (a boards' version of Mardi Gras if you will). For a couple of pages none of the ladies were biting, but they eventually caved in. Now it has degenerated (for some of the ladies) into an extension of their facebook photo gallery with multilple posts whoring themselves out.

    Indeed, this made me laugh.

It's just soooo unfair the ladies get more thanks. What can be done to end this blatant abuse of gender?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,207 ✭✭✭The King of Moo

I first put up a photo just so people could put a face to the posts, as I'm sure literally everyone on Boards was dying to do.

I put a couple more later just to keep things up to date really. Lots of people do that, like when they come back from holiday.
Some people do overdo it, and you get some who have about three posts in total, including one on one of those threads. Maybe that's a bit narcissistic, but I think most people post photos others actually want to see.

Also, I always make sure I post photos where you can see my face, so that I get more thanks. :pac:

(Just joking, I actually don't know how many thanks I've got for them.)

You could go back and thank all the men instead of scrolling fastly by for fap material :D

I wouldn't post my picture, because I want anonymity here ( my photo is on the internet in plenty of places already like twitter, fb and other places- an image search for my real name will show only me on the first page, but I have an unusual name); however you seem to think you have discovered something profound. Of course attractive people will post more of themselves, and of course attractive people get more thanks.

    (the tl;dr answer

    No sh*t sharlock.)

Good looking people are ALWAYS going to get more attention. Women have boobs - boobs in a picture generates a lot of thanks, as men can't resist. Tis a no brainer!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,808 ✭✭✭Chris P. Bacon

Its the same people who thank all the pictures, mostly men thank the women pics and vice versa.

I'd never posts a picture of myself on this site because some of the things I've said here will probably get me killed.

I love the anonymity of boards so I'll abstain from posting a photo.

That, and I'm not very pretty and definitely not photogenic!

I'm wishing I had stayed anonymous, though I didn't post because I'm particularly pretty & such either, but, sometimes nice to put a face to names. Obviously not if you're planning on retaining any sort of anonymity though!

I got a lot of thanks for posting a pic of my arse on a private forum,( i was pissed at the time.) The worrying thing was the amount of people who recognised me at the Boards beers in Galway....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,877 ✭✭✭stripysocks85

Why did you have a pic of your arse anyway?! :S

People recognised you from your arse?????!

I can get posting up a few holiday snaps in a private forum, but the excessive amounts of photos from some people is a bit ridiculous, looks a bit attention seeking to me, especially if its just random ones of them in different poses.

Yeah. I was there. He walks around with his arse hanging out of his trousers, Gangster style.

Multiple photos yes, multiple photos of same facial pose, not so much

Well personally, the only forums I've put photos in are ones that I post in or read regularly.

Some poeple treat boards almost as an extention of fb..that's attention seeking.

Is it really such a big deal?

I like to see what people look like (and to perv).
I don't care why people are putting their photos up, and if someone overdoes it with the attention-seeking, it doesn't bother me: it's their problem.

If you don't want to look, just don't go into the threads.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 559 ✭✭✭Miss Olenska

If you don't want to look, just don't go into the threads.

Sounds very much like an "If you don't like it, don't watch it" type argument. Why bother criticising or commenting on anything, in that case? People are just making observations.

seriously, the only real reason to be bothered about this is jealousy. simple really.

I've posted some pictures, only ever in forums I'm part of and quite sparingly. only one except for in one private one and AH I think. I have a look at the pictures threads where I post every so often just because I like to see what the regular posters look like. and i'm a little bit of a perv tbh.

I know, and of course I wouldn't apply it all situations.

I just think in this case that the threads are clearly marked and can be avoided if the person's not interested, or if they do want to look at the pictures, then I don't think it's too surprising to find that some people thank based on looks and some people seek attention.

It'd be different if people were putting pictures up in the middle of an unrelated thread!

I guess I'm just too mellow though, and just don't understand people getting annoyed by things that don't annoy me :)

Guess it comes across as thanks-whoring. Esp the same photo posted in various threads. It screams "Look at me, LOOK AT ME!!!"
