Rovers could well do better than them in the group stages too.

I really can't see them being in the top two -all the Scottish clubs are hopeless right now.

    Ultimately it is irrelevant.

Glasgow Celtic are a pale shadow of what they were in the mid noughties, and during O'Neill's tenure.

Their current squad would struggle in the Championship, with teams like West Ham United, Leicester, and Blackpool boasting far better squads than Celtic.

Celtic dont deserve to be there because they played badly and lost to a club that cheated?

A good comparison would be a mid ranking Championship team.

A little ridiculous to claim "Celtic got away with robbery" yeah they didn't perform over the 2 legs but Sion broke the rules by fielding almost half a team of ineligible players!

Imagine what these boards would be like if the same happened to Rovers or God forbid a French striker scored a dodgy goal with his hand against Ireland.

Not going say anymore on matter only to say they are lucky they got second chance...

I rather give it to more deserving team, but rules are rules.

    No. It is totally relevant.

A small fry club are smiling over their reinstatement, even though they failed to qualify on the field. They both dont deserve to be there, or the game should be replayed with the ineligible players out.

Look, the entire thing is irrelevant to me.

Nothing lucky about it, Sion cheated, they were warned beforehand, ignored it and they are being thrown out as a consequence.

Who would be more 'deserving'? Some club that wasnt good enough to get a European Place in their league? UEFA have moved away from throwing in all the richest clubs into European competitions and actually going about distributing the wealth more evenly.

So it would only matter if it was a big EPL club or something? :facepalm

If the entire thing is irrelevant to you, why are you posting an opinion about it?

This is good for Scottish football.

Afaik, with all the scottish teams all knocked not of Europe, teams were looking at 3 qualifying rounds next year. This will obviously boost the co-effiecent.

    From BBC Website -

Sion signed five players while the club were still under a transfer ban imposed by Fifa after breaching rules over the signing of Egypt goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary three years ago.

How were they able to sign players if there was a ban in place? Did the Swiss FA not have to ratify the signings ?

Its only fair, the other team cheated in a big way, hopefully they can do decent in europe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,093 ✭✭✭✭chopperbyrne

Did they play any of those players in earlier qualifying matches?

If Celtic get reinstated, surely this opens the doors for every team Sion have beaten in European qualifying matches this season to appeal?

They appealed that ban in a Swiss court and had it overturned but UEFA/FIFA rules state all appeals have to go through their appeal system. Sion are also in trouble with other Swiss teams who have talked about boycotting games against Sion if they field the players in question.

Bottom line here is that Celtic are very lucky to be back in it. Couldn't do the job in the pitch against a team they should have beat in the first place, lucky boys if ye ask me

We knew this was going to happen before the tie was played if Sion played those ineligible players, I fail to see the 'luck'.

I'll be as blunt as I can here, but this is unadulterated bullshít. Please explain to everyone just exactly why they don't deserve to be there.

Basically, Sion broke UEFA rules, they are in clear contravention of them and should have been removed immediately. UEFA are partly to blame for this fiasco for letting it go this far without action, but to say that Celtic don;t deserve to be there is just plain wrong.

Celtic are damn lucky. They've essentially gotten a bye into the group stages by virtue of having drawn Sion. They are in the competition by chance, every other club by merit.

Anyone that says its wrong for Celtic to take Sion's place in this are really so far off the mark its not true Sion cheated simple so Celtic put in a protest and the SFA backed them up both correctly

Surely every draw for a cup is a matter of luck?!?

Maybe Sion were lucky to draw Celtic when they were missing 4 of their best players and instead of cheating should have played by the rules and knocked them out on merit?

Sion broke the rules, it's that simple. Every club has to abide by them, Sion basically put us through by starting them players - pure and simple.

No excusing Celtic's performance fair enough. Should have put a few past them at home. Majstorovic decided the tie in the 2nd leg by getting sent off after 42 seconds and giving away a penalty. At least he will serve his ban.

BTW this isn't over yet, Sion have appealed the decision.

Fair play Broxi. Tbh I'd be kinda sickened if it was in reverse and Rangers had gotten through over it but still, it would be hard to argue against it. Sion shot themselves basically.

In all fairness I'm sure Rangers are delighted with this news. Celtic now have an extra 6 games before Christmas, and in all fairness will more than likely not progress.
