AH: The Hanly Centre Girl Of The Mind

Most Dublin males aged 18 to 40 who frequent Grafton Street will know The Hanly Centre Girls; bright and cheerful, always ready with a compliment and a flirt.....all in return for your Two Euro!

If you're reading this, I'm pretty sure you know After Hours; bright and cheerful, always ready with a compliment and a flirt....all in return for your original thought!

Yes, I'll admit I've been fairly angry with AH over the past few months. I wasn't quite sure why until I was approached (for probably the 20th time in my life) by one of these half-girl/half-leech mutants at the top of Grafton Street yesterday.

Before I'm attacked: I'm not saying stay away from AH! Nor am I saying don't give to charity! I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you ever have an original thought and you ever have aspirations to put one or many original thoughts to work for you keep them to yourself and away from After Hours.

I'd rather have Two Euro in my pocket during austere times than be duped out of my Two Euro.....only to see a picture of that same Two Euro later in a newspaper article written by some half-wit journalist. He sure is a good looking journalist though, I'll give him that much!

Did he post something "insightful" only to see it in the papers a couple.of days later or.something?

Admit it OP, you've never had an original thought in your life. And you're a grotesquely ugly freak.

They exist alright, I remember being plagued by the same two girls in Galway about 6 years ago when at the races met them every night in Galway city, in the end politeness wasn't working so I told them to fook off! Not proud of it but at the end of a long week it was all a bit too much for me!

I'd love to see some examples of journalist stealing content from boards and creating articles out of it. I know they sometimes quote people from boards but I think this wholesale copy and paste stuff is exaggerated.

Perhaps OP a link to what you think was plagiarised by journos from AH and to your original post(s) would be in order, instead of the cryptic Dublinese allegory.
I'm pretty sure I've had some stuff lifted from on here and other boards forums, but I could never prove it in court and tbh they're welcome to it.
That said something you post in here is published by you and is technically your property so it being reproduced elsewhere without your permission or a mention isn't on and I'm sure the admins might be interested.

Hanley girls eh? Are they some kind of cut price hooker? I'm left with an image of the Raisins Girls from South Park only with howiya accents...

I don't think anything has been lifted from my previous posts though I do intend to write some serious things in the future. I guess the purpose of this thread was to acknowledge what was holding me back from doing so.

I'd say well done to any bored journalist who can convert this incoherent rambling post into legible English.

No offence to AH, but I really don't think any journalist worth his salt would desire to plagiarize the forum's users.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,491 ✭✭✭Yahew

Nobody really knows what the OP is on about, do they? I mean, I admire that some people have tried to answer the original post, but I abandoned the first paragraph - apparantly AH is like a chuggers. Really? I mean chuggers come to you, an "original thought" in an AH thread is you coming to AH. The only people being mugged here are those of us who wasted the 2 minutes of our lifes to read that incoherent nonsense.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,491 ✭✭✭Yahew

Oh I did eventually go back and read the rest.

We moved on from chuggers, and a new simile presents itself: posting here is like having a picture of your two euros posted in a newspaper by a handsome journalist.

As far as I can tell, the idea of the original post is that AH is like the Hanly Centre chuggers because the chuggers lure you in by seducing you and take the TWO EURO you give them (and maybe it's implied they misuse it, though that's not mentioned, but it would mean the comparison makes more sense).

Now After Hours also lures you in with its attractive and flirtatious users, thus making you give your opinion or good idea (or TWO CENTS), only for that then to be misused by an unscrupulous journalist.
The same way, I suppose it's implied, that the Hanly Centre misuses your two euro.

I'm ashamed to admit that I've read the post more than a few times now.

    Did I figure it out?

    Do I win?

It's happened on boards before (not just AH) where thinly veiled copy/paste jobs have appeared in various publications that didn't credit the source. I don't have any examples offhand but to be fair you've been about less than a year and this wouldn't be a new phenomenon and is in fact less likely to happen since the place got even more popular over the years.
Pretty sure that some journalists have posted here too in the past, posing questions and sometimes polls to garner various public opinion for their piece without revelaing their motive.

They tend to swipe ideas too tbh, from Boards threads generally rather than just specifically AH.

Not so much wholesale copypasta, but the odd phrase often unconsciously gets used that gives the game away.

Can't say I can point to any recent example tbh, haven't been keeping an eye out, but there's been a fair few examples in the past.

But then, how many Boards threads (esp. AH) start with "I just saw this in the *** paper, and it got me thinking ..."

Is there any such thing as 100% originality?

    Fuppin Hanly Centre.

Got annoyed by one lad for ages to buy a scratchcard in Cavan the other week. I'm too soft.

4 euro I think it was. Jesus wept.

I find that the weekend review magazine in the Saturday Indo often has topics that came up in AH. Not topics of the day either, just random ones. Can't think of any off hand either but it does happen

Not a biggy imo, it's hard to have an original opinon these days and you can't blame these lads for seeing something genuinely interesting and thinking that it would go well in the paper

    AH, I don't believe.

Really? AH has it's moments IMO...once you wade through the childish BS, thanks whoring and toilet humour there can be some pretty decent discussions on here. I've seen threads that out did their parallel efforts on politics and the other more sombre parts of the site on AH and since it's also the busiest of the forums you get more through traffic and hence a more diverse set of opinions... hell you even get the odd original one from time to time...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 451 ✭✭Rocket19

Ohhh those people are so annoying! If its not the Hanley centre people, its the panda people. And before when it was the PAWS people?

As a girl, its usually the guys that will stop me. They're more persistent if you're with a friend or two, but we'll only stop if the guy is particularly hot/charming :P Its harder to say no to them! Only given them money about 2/3 times though, and i'm town every day (still bad!).

The charity people are crazy though! They actually remember your name, will remember if you bought a scratch card earlier, etc. Anything to make money I guess, but my friend worked briefly for the Hanley centre, and she quit after a few month because she couldn't hack it. In fairness, people can be sooo rude to them, even if they are extremely annoying.
