Apologies if this has been asked before but is it possible to tune 5* (5 star) into the other channels on Sky?

No its not a FTA channel, Its FTV which needs a FTV card, talk of it going FTA in the future when new space becomes available

You can tune it in if you have a Freesat from Sky card.

No, it's blocked on Irish cards. There's currently no unencrypted feed.

    as per darth_maul's post above.

Post on DS today from someone who emailed Channel 5 about not being able to Celebrity Big Brother's bit on the side:
    Dear Mrs xxx

Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding Celebrity Big Brother's Bit On The Side.

We were sorry to read that you cannot watch the programme on 5*. Due to a lack of narrow beam capacity, we have been unable to make 5* and 5 USA available on the Freesat platform since the channels were launched. However, additional capacity on Freesat is likely to become available later this year and we are planning to make these channels available once this is in place.

The programme is broadcast on both 5* and Channel 5 and we recommend that you keep an eye on the television listings to obtain scheduling details for the latter channel.

In the meantime, you can catch up with what you have missed using our online catch up service, Demand 5. The web address is:

    http://www.channel5.com/shows/celebr...it-on-the-side

If there is anything further we can help you with, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for your interest in Channel 5.

    Yours sincerely

    Terry
    VIEWER ADVISOR

So it looks like hopefully that we could be getting 5* and 5 USA.

Apologies, Muffler. Am a bit late getting back to you.The Freesat from Sky card is only available to UK addresses. I got mine through a family member there. It is practically useless as to the amount of channels you can get with it. The only ones I notice are the 5 family - all of them. If you are in N.I. you can/could order from the Sky website. I think it is now £25 once off.No need for activation, just stick it it the box & it will work.

Well that code works on the Ferguson Ariva 120 Combo box.

Thanks Kristopherus. It was my sister who was looking about 5* as some part or other of the big brother programme is shown on that channel ( I know, I know)

I dont think she would find it value for money. Getting an address in NI or even England wouldnt be a problem.

    Thanks for the info though.

No. You must ring Sky to activate a new UK FTV card if you have purchased it online from the Sky website. The family member probably activated it before sending it on to you.

are you sure it doesn't need activating??? My understanding is (was) that activating a FTV card involves a call to Sky....it would be mighty useful if they had scrapped this for those of us outside the UK
Sorrry hadn't seen the above post.

That is probably why they insist on it

as it doesn't actually stop anything, it seems irrelevant and irritating!!

Making things irritating may stop some?

Making it too easy would mean more illegitimate cards...

Hi, folks. Re the Freesat from Sky card. I have the white card. I got it in July 2010 iirc. I stuck it into the Sky+ box that I had and it worked without a hitch. I now have it in the Ferguson Ariva and am getting all the 5 family including that pesky Big Bro rubbish:eek:. When I examine the card in the Ariva menu, it tells me that it is valid until 13/10/2014. Hope that helps.

Update. Just contacted the family member in the UK. He has over 9 yrs experience in installing Sky systems over there. He has confirmed the you DO NOT have to have this card activated by Sky. The are self-activating cards and should activate successfully within 60secs of being inserted in the box. For anyone having problems, it is recommended that you leave the card in the Sky box overnight. Hope this clarifies the matter.:)

5* and 5 USA will be FTA later this year when Astra 1N kicks in, no need for a card then, but too late for BB I suppose

There seems to be alot of mixed views/opinions as to where the Astra 1N is going to be placed, Some say 28.2E but on the SES website it says the Astra 1N is moving to 19.2E - HERE

The initial plan is for 28.2, it will be moved to 19.2 after the launch of 2E, 2F and 2G. This was confirmed by SES at a speech during the launch.

Yeah, the Astra 1 part suggests its long term home will be 19.2° but after a spell at 28. Didn't 2C end up at a seperate location to its long term home at 28.2°?

(as an aside, one must wonder if German channels etc will end up being on a tight beam longterm on 1N...)

Yes, 2C was initially deployed to 19.2 to operate in band D (10.7-10.95 GHz). I remember TV Puls from Poland being available on analogue from 2C. It was moved to 28.2 in 2008 during which time it was hardly used - one transponder was active for Channel 5 and another was used for ITV interactive services. It only spent a few months at 28.2 due to the failure of Astra 5A/Sirus 2. It was then moved to 31.5° east to cover for 5A.

So will 2E, 2F and 2G be permanent in 28.2?
Can we expect any new channels coming to freesat from these?
Are they replacing any older satellites or just adding to the one's up there already?

They're replacing 2A, 2B and 2D but chances are they'll have narrow beams which should allow more Freesat capacity.

    Cheers for the reply :)

Does that mean a complete rescan for all current channels (with new frequency's etc.) as most of the freesat are on Astra 2A and Eurobird 1?
    Or will we even notice?

Nope, chances are you won't even notice :) In the analogue days you might have noticed better reception on channels transferred to the new satellite (as I did when 1D's channels were moved to 1E) but on digital you won't see a thing. In the short term some broadcasters might move to the 10.95-11.2 GHz space to use the 1N capacity though.

Hi all, I'm not an expert on satellites, so bare with me, according to the link below it says that Astra 1N is due to begin broadcast in mid October at 28.2E.

Presuming this is right, does that mean that 5* and 5 USA will be available in Ireland through other channels?

You can get this channel on Freeview if you're along the border or in certain parts of the south east.
