Well Folks whats the plans on this ?

Really keen on the idea myself and would be willing to help out , if required

Played in an outing on Monday in Elm Park, apart for it being a beautiful course everything just felt a little more organized ( No disrespect to anyone )

From the bag of goodies before heading out , to the nearest the pin on two holes and the longest drive, kinda added a lot more to the day .

Or it just might have been I made up for my miserable 17 points from Saturday with 31 points :D

No offence taken. All feedback welcome

The society is very much in it's infancy. Our first outing we were lucky enough to have a whole range of prizes donated that included nearest the pin and longest drive.

One of the problems we have is that we have people from all over the place. Getting a course that suits everyone and a date is going to be hard.

For this to really work we are going to have to get an agreed amount from everybody that will cover prizes etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,645 ✭✭✭k.p.h

Just wanted to say that the poll system works quite well in regard to date/course selection IMO. Gives everyone a chance to have their say and that makes sure you get the best turnout.

Course selection (pre poll) is a bit of a tricky one trying to suit everyone, but you can only do so much so a slight rotation on location might be the way to go. Maybe trying to stay relatively close to the M 6,7,8 & 9 Motorways might be beneficial also.

I'm sure everyone will be ok throwing a little something into the pot for prizes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,084 ✭✭✭dubtom

Perhaps a poll on peoples top 5 or 10 courses on where they'd like to play might be an idea, possible even next years selection. Wouldn't hurt when it's up and running to register on that society site, where clubs make deals available.

Good suggestion dubtom - I'll get working on getting us registered.

    Keano,

I have us registered on mygolfsociety already as had been discussing deals with Tom Kennedy in Mygolfsociety.

I think first of all we should select a committee for 2012(even though 1 more outing in 2011 might be worthwhile) and then decide on 6 outings for 2012 and get them organised, all of this can be done through mygolfsociety.ie anyway

I agree with ssbob here. I'd suggest to pick about 10 - 12 suitable courses based on location. Email them all asking for the best rate / deal they can give us. And pick top 6 from responses. If these 6 dates and locations are locked in then people will have time to book it off from work / partner etc !

Also in terms of your earlier questions about prizes and goodie bags:

The reason we set up the society was more from a socialising point of view, a society for golf fanatics if you like, but if people are willing to pay a few € extra then we can organise prizes and goodie bags.

Great idea and probably the fairest solution for all. Now to pick those courses:D.Should this be done by the commitee or by a poll.

Also if there is gonna be one more outing this year might be no harm to set a date and course sooner rather than later to allow ample time for all to keep their calender free.

I'd be willing to pay a subscription towards a few prizes towards category winners, nearest the pin and long drive.
An inscribed cup that would be passed on with every outing for the overall winner?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 395 ✭✭mags1962

Would not reccomend serious prizes or Cup, prizes can lead to jealousy etc especially if the same winners keep winning and Cups tend to go missing/late returns and the next in line has to wait and so on.
A kitty is very helpful for booking courses, goodie bags etc but I would suggest an account that need at least 2 sig's for writing cheques. It tends to be a double edged sword in that you have to book some courses with a deposit but members have to see bookings before stumping up, i.e. is it worth being a member for €x's if I can only make 2 outings.
What advantages do members have and why not just turn up on the day and play?
Was involved in a society years ago and was burned and think you are better off just having a social thing and not too serious, maybe just GOY 1,2,3,4,5 or whatever. Cheep and cheerful for me.

Can I suggest a society sub-forum makes it easier to follow all goings on.

Also will be involved in these events

Looking forward to playing more new courses

Question. How good do you have to be to join the Society? Do you need membership of a club or something?

It would be nice, although I don't know if practical, to put all the high to very high handicappers together.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 207 ✭✭super_freddie

    Hi,

Not a frequent poster here but would definitely be interested in this. One more outing this year and a full season next year seems like the way to go. Running this through a sub-forum would probably be the best way of keeping this discussion visible ... what are the next steps?

Hi Mags, we will planning to keep it cheap, Keano is taking a list of anyone who is interested in being on the committee, we tried already with just 3/4 responses, it seems an awful lot of people are willing to make comments on here about this and how they would like to see things being run but are not actually willing to help out.

I think you should have a joining fee for starters. That way you will weed out the people who are not really serious. It also gives you money for prizes and booking deposits which can then be deducted from the green fee on the day. If people pay to join then they will make more of an effort to participate. I was involved with running an online society before and found this to be a good system.

Not sure I agree with you here to be honest, who are we trying to weed out? People who might only turn up occasionally or maybe people just out for a go for the first time. I think we need to keep these people involved or even allow them to have to option to come along if they feel like it.

I think the society should be left open to anyone with a boards.ie account. And that way then the society can continue even if its just a 3ball that turns up or 30. I think the ethos of the society should be something like "breaking down the barriers of the internet, strangers socializing, competing and having fun on the golf course".

I think the best way to achieve this is to have a cover charge on each event. Also I think the prizes should be kept to non monetary (or donated) items that serves just as a memoir of the event. That way it keeps it simple and also helps remove pressure and responsibility from the organizers.

I think the best way to keep people interested would be to have a golfer of the year competition with points allocated for results during the year. This competition could then culminate for the captains prize at the end of the year.

If the turnout is good all year and the early round prizes kept modest this would allow for a decent prize kitty for the captains and the golfer of the year competitions.

I'm not sure if all that would work as I have never been involved in a society before, I might be way off but it's just my thoughts anyway. If ye do decided to go the GOTY route I would be willing to donate a trophy for the winner. It wont be solid gold or anything but I will make sure its impressive enough to put on the mantle for the relatives to gawk at :p

Edit. Also if we have one more event this year it could be used to get the kitty going and get the society off to a good start next year.

Believe me it can be a frustrating thing trying to organise a series of golf outings. The GOY is a good idea as it keeps everyone interested. We used a similar method to Topgolfer with apperance points for every event and then extra points for top 10 finishes. The fun and games will start when you have to give out handicaps to non club golfers.:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 395 ✭✭mags1962

I would love to play with other boardies, in a golfing way, in a society and would have no probs doing scores, cards and maybe even handicaps at outings.
I think a commitee would have to meet offside in order to agree and decide a lot of things.
Can't play for 6-8 months, long story, nothing dodgy though.

Hi lads , just read through this thread and i think its a brilliant idea. What Keano said about everybody been all over the place got me thinking.
If everybody posting here is a member of a club, why not see what deals your club can offer. I'm sure if they were told that 30 to 40 golfers were looking to play ,a good deal could be done. Then the host member/s can take charge of things on that days outing, take the pressure off the committee. Just a thought:rolleyes:

    Hi Lads,

complete "boards.ie" outing newbie here, but I have a few suggetions for a society "going forward" as the man says :)

    in no particular order.......

    1. A small joining fee (say €20 per man) just to help with outing deposits
    2. A society golf top with a boards.ie logo (they might help out witht he cost cough cough)
    3. A handicap system of a MAX of lowest handicap plus 18 (ie lowest handicap of 5 plus 18 = 23 )
    4. First prize, front nine and back nine for every outing (couple of quid then for birdie club, collected on the day)
    5. More prizes for Captains/Presidents day (longest drive, nearest the pin etc)
    6. Possibly 6/8 outings per year, on a day that suits most people, with only the best 4/6 counting towards GOTY
    7. A webpage that everyone in the society has access to, to see scores, outings etc etc ( www.societygolfing.co.uk springs to mind, my own society use it and its really handy)
    8. An elected committee whose decision is final in regards to scores recorded, handicaps etc
9 An AGM to arrange all of this (read..any chance for a few scoops )
    10. an affiliation to the GUI with the society

sorry if all this is teaching people how to suck eggs

Oh yeah, I'd also like to volunteer my services in any way to help out in the running of the society

    cheers

I'm a member of a very well run society. There is an annual joining fee which goes towards prizes. I think some of the funds are used to help towards functions like captains dinner, which is held on the last outing of the year. There are about 6 - 8 outings per year and winners' (and players') points accumulate towards golfer of the year. There is no limit on the handicaps and there is a most improved golfer prize at the end of the year as well. To win golfer of the year does not necessarily mean you have to be winning all the time. Some winners might not be on every outing so points can accumulate through attendance. Prizes on regular outings were for 1st, 2nd and 3rd and front and back 9. For captain's prize there were a few more categories, like longest drive, nearest the pin, etc. It may sound a bit much for a small society. but I think you would need to create a constitution
