Apologies if this has been discussed many times in the past.

Just wondering what the best soundtrack of all time is.

I love the soundtrack for Inception, in many ways, its a masterpiece. Seen Tron Legacy the other day and I have to say, Daft Punk did an amazing job.

    Any other suggestions?

Trainspotting and Pulp fiction have got to be high on the list

True but I think there are two kinds of OST:

    1. A great collection of songs which really fit the movie e.g. goodfellas.

    2. An original composition from scratch.

The soundtrack from Notorious, the film based on the life of The Notorious B.I.G. There are some classics on it; Juicy, Hypnotize, What's Beef, Kick In The Door. Unreal quality in it.

The LOTR soundtrack is brilliant as well. "Concerning Hobbits" is a great piece and fits the whole atmosphere created in the scenes so perfectly.

Most recently I've been listening to and enjoying the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World soundtrack. Some of the best in my opinion are Wipeout 2097 and Wip3out, as well as Lord of the Rings and 24. :)

Fight Club had some good tunes, and some of the songs eddie vedder wrote on the Into the Wild soundtrck were nice.
Anyone ever heard of an irish film called On the Edge? Starred Cillian Murphy in an early role. Had some great songs in it, the frames, therapy, david gray, smashing pumpkins. Could never find a soundtrack for it tho.

Dazed and Confused OST. 70's tunes, nice.

I doubt if any OST can top Magical Mystery Tour, The Beatles's finest album

    "Magical Mystery Tour" (McCartney)
"The Fool on the Hill" (McCartney)
    "Flying" (John Lennon/Paul McCartney/George Harrison/Richard Starkey)
    "Blue Jay Way" (Harrison)
    "Your Mother Should Know" (McCartney)
    "I Am the Walrus" (Lennon)
    "Hello, Goodbye" (McCartney)
    "Strawberry Fields Forever" (Lennon)
    "Penny Lane" (McCartney)
"Baby, You're a Rich Man" (Lennon)
"All You Need Is Love" (Lennon)

The last four songs were tacked onto that release and weren't part of the original soundtrack. The original album ended with Hello Goodbye.

And Blue Jay Way is sh¡t in anyone's book...

Soundtrack to "The Blues Brothers" is fantastic!

Eddie Veddar's album for Into The Wild is stunning!
The movie and album are just synonymous with eachother. "Rise" and "Long Night" are excellent tracks.

As for musical scores, Clint Mansell has built up quite a CV. The Requiem OST can almost make me feel paranoid or tense at time, totally helps you be where the character is, in particular the scenes with Mrs Goldfarb.
And for The Fountain, his soundtrack is just mindblowing! Death Is The Road To Awe gives me goosebumps!

I suppose it'll really get your goat, then, if I suggest Primal Scream's Vanishing Point, an imagined soundtrack, but a soundtrack all the same.

The Good the Bad and the Ugly - Ennio Morricone (Or anything by EM, This man is a fcuking genius)

    Requiem for a Dream

Goodfellas (I think its all well and good just selecting good songs for a soundtrack, but Goodfellas is the perfect example of songs being executed brilliantly in a movie. Genius by Scorsese)

I personally loved the Harry Potter p1 soundtrack.
Romeo + Juilet was a good one too, as was Once.

Hot Press did an article on this a while back, which I can't find anywhere. I have the magazine somewhere, I'll dig it up later.

Lord of War :) Easily Nic Cage's finest performance Im not a big fan of his but he is outstanding in this, stunning piece of movie making with an equally stunning soundtrack main score by Antonio Pinto. Film is based on a true story if you havent seen it is well worth checking out a real eye opener, incredibly good film:)

"Best Soundtrack Of All Time" is sort of like "Best Musical Style" of all time - rather personal and subjective. There are a lot of great ones listed here. I like O Brother Where Art Thou, Inception, The King's Speech, and countless others....maybe favorite is more accurate than "best."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 109 ✭✭music producer

While it's not my favorite, I thought the soundtrack for Blade Runner had a very dreamy, vibey feel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 184 ✭✭The House Of Wolves

I've attached Hotpress's article on their top film soundtracks - sorry about it being cut off, just lobbed it in the scanner and went off to do other things :P

I defo agree with some of their choices, others I haven't heard.

My favourite film composer is Bernard Hermann, and I think his greatest works are Taxi Driver, Vertigo and Psycho. Unfortunately music like that does not appear very often in movies anymore.

romeo&juliet and the good, the bad and the ugly

I love at the start of a Metallica gig when they play Ecstacy of Gold!

Kill Bill Vol1 was pretty cool too, they used a lot of Morricone samples for the soundtrack
