TV3 getting coverage for Shamrock Rovers games... disgrace

I think it's a disgrace that TV3 are getting the rights to Shamrock Rovers Europa League games. TV3 have shown no interest in Irish football. I know they've the rights for the Europa League but their should be something that if a broadcaster is not promoting the game within their region that the rights for the games would go to a broadcaster in the region that do promote the game.

Don't be daft. The Europa League is tv3's 'thing'.

RTE taking it from them just cause an Irish club in involved would be very unfair.

TV3 are cursing the fact that Rovers got through. Instead of buying UK coverage of English games on the cheap, they now have to cover all three of Rovers' home games and make sure that it's up to UEFA coverage standards. Rovers going through will have cost them hundreds of thousands.

Do they have to show Rovers games?

Was always under the impression that that it was a UEFA rule that you had to show your countries team if you buy the rights, was always talked about as one of the best thing of an Irish club making the CL, watching Bill and co look utterly pissed off at having to cover some Irish nobodies.

The broadcaster’s group commercial director Pat Kiely said he expected “huge audiences for all the games” which will mean increased advertising revenue.

By yesterday morning TV3 had received dozens of calls about taking part in a sponsorship package being prepared, he said.

The station has exclusive rights in Ireland to air all Europa League matches. With an Irish team now playing in the competition for the first time the value of that coverage is set to be a “significant multiple” of what it was, said Mr Kiely.

Costs will also be higher, however, as the broadcaster will have to provide the live feed for other stations covering Rovers’ home matches. Normally, TV3 would buy the coverage from foreign companies for a price much lower than the six-figure sum being estimated by the primary provider.

Mr Kiely expected the revenue generated by increased advertising rates to “more than make up” for this increased cost.

It'd be interesting to see them cover the games whatever about the nobodies comment.

As Europa League rights holders, they're oblidged to provide full coverage of the home games and they have to make sure that the coverage is up to 'UEFA standard'. They have to make it available to UEFA and their broadcast partners in other countries. They don't have to cover the away games, but given the fact that they have to do the three home games, they'll be showing the away games to try and build up a campaign around Rovers.

When TV3 intially went for the Europa rights it was because they were getting Liverpool games for next to nothing, I doubt they ever thought in a million years that they'd have to live up to their coverage part of the contract. They showed zero interest in showing Rovers' qualifying games, leaving it to RTE and Setanta and now they're pretty much screwed.

"Interesting" yeah, they'd be the same as if they were covering any other non-English sides. Spoof and Bluster, but at least they'd be able to pronounce the players' names.

They can make money from showing the games as well and a name for themselves. I think they missed the boat though by not showing the away leg. Had they shown that, they could have marketed having shown one of the historic nights in Irish football.

As far as Bill and co are concerned they are nobodies and they would still spend their time talking about United.

I know they've the rights for the Europa League but their should be something that if a broadcaster is not promoting the game within their region that the rights for the games would go to a broadcaster in the region that do promote the game.

Who would have fit your parameters?
RTE - not allowed bid as senior Champions League broadcaster.
TG4 - Their promotion of Irish football is as limited as TV3s, and games would likely have been in Irish.
Setanta - Not available free-to-air in large parts of the country.
Sky - again not allowed bid, never showed an LOI game despite having the rights to some games in the middle of the last decade, not available free-to-air.

TV3 looks like the best result for us.

Really? How did that come about?

One of the deals they did with the FAI for Irish home Internationals allowed them, as a complete freebie, to show coverage of the two semi finals and final of the FAI Cup in tandem with RTE, but they never took up the option.

(I've only anecdotal of this from a mate who was assistant manager of an LOI club at the time the deal was done).

Edit : Interestingly when the North sold their home international games to Sky they insisted that 4 league games be shown as well, which is why we get random games like Crusaders v Donegal Celtic tonight, but scarcely a mention of that league on sky until the next game rolls around in December or whenever.

Don't have any problem in TV3 showing them to be honest. As another poster has already pointed out, there'd be complaints if TV3 weren't showing it!

Seems like a silly rule especially in a small country like ours. I'm sure there are even smaller countries with maybe only one or two channels who could show both competitions.

I wouldn't. I accept the reasons highlight as to why it is TV3. I'm just airing grievances with their lack of interest so far. It won't happen but I think TV3 should waive the rights for the games and let RTE take over for these games.

Do you think this stuff is free?

    UEFA have regulations.

One channel cannot have both the Europa League and Champions League.

If you buy the rights for your country, you must show the matches of teams from your country that qualify. You also must be responsible for the proper distribution of that footage to other networks for their highlights packages or live broadcasts.

This is going to cost TV3 a lot of money and they're just hoping that the public will get on the bandwagon, so they can sell expensive advertising spots during the matches.

RTÉ want nothing to do with the Europa League and would have been royally pissed off had an Irish team properly qualified for the Champions League because of the extra expense and loss of one night of live coverage of an English team that would in general be far more popular in Ireland than any Irish team.

Plus TV3 show Champions League games as well. Both RTE and TV3 have shown Champions League and Europa League/UEFA Cup games in the same season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,081 ✭✭✭✭chopperbyrne

I read somewhere the rules on this had changed to encourage competition, but apparently this was wrong.

Still ludicrous to suggest that TV3 should just stand aside and give the rights to RTÉ.

ITV aren't a senior partner in England for the CL,Sky are, hence no Europa League coverage on Sky,same for RTE here.

Yes they do, they show a Tuesday night game & RTE have the Wednesday game. Following week they switch nights.
Last year TV3 pushed all their Europa League games onto 3e, except of course the final.

Will be interesting to see how they work it this time around.

But I can't see why people are complaining, won't it be great to see 6 live games involving an Irish team in the group stage of a European competition on free tv.

Personally I'd prefer to watch paint dry than the Europe League.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,477 ✭✭✭legendary.xix

The Europa League to a degree was brought in for clubs looking to form a North Atlantic League and the like. The idea being that they'd get the same standard of games in this competition.
Separately it's also promotes the game in more countries. Coverage of Belgian clubs involvement in the Europa League has gotten good coverage over there for example. It amusing in some respects of how Scottish clubs were in mind for the creation of the Europa League and now they don't even qualify.

Yep, I don't quite understand why RTE is considered the senior CL broadcaster (and therefore not allowed bid). They both have first choice on the night they broadcast and they both have the same amount of games with the exception of only RTE having the final as far as I know. Maybe thats enough to swing it against them.
    Minstrel27 wrote: »

They only get choice from the games that RTE/TV3 didn't pick, so I could see how this would be considered as not being enough to exclude them from the Europa.

They share Champions League broadcasting with sky which might have an impact.

In any case if there was no other channel interested in showing the Europa League Uefa would probably sell to whoever wanted it

TV3 are showing the first match live at 5.30pm on Thursday 15th September which is very promising. I was sure they were going to put it on 3e.

Why are the 3 home matches set for 6pm kick off though. Would they not achieve a greater TV audience at 8, or is it a security matter?

A few factors, which group you were drawn into along with clashes with other teams from the same nation, as in this case, Greece, England and Russia and randomness of the fixtures.

Why? I'm not running down the champions league here, but the Europa league is more exciting and unpredictable, you can name the majority of the last 8 of the champions league every season.

Yes the standard of football is higher in the champions league, but the Europa League can be very exciting, there is some great teams in it.
