Hi all, im looking for info on the beep test please, I applied for a job 2 weeks ago and all of a sudden i got a letter saying i have the the beep test this Thursday. the level i must hit is 8.6 . I have done the test a long time ago so know what it is. Question, is 8.6 high ? I'm 25, i play football once a week, do a big hike once a month, on the cross trainer 2-3 times a week for half a hour, run 1.5 miles in under 12 min easy,

So should i be ok or should i be worried, help please

what job makes you do a beep test?

I haven't done one in years but i'm sure you can download one somewhere and test yourself

In context, 15/16 and you're a machine, 11/12 would be fairly decent for a fit guy training regularly. I tested a football team a few years back and the average score was 10, and these guys were amateurs. The lowest was an 8.

8.6 seems arbitrary. First of all without equipment it's hard to measure the decimals! Most people use a binary score, you either got there or you didn't. Of course it really depends on your current level of fitness. I think the lowest score of anyone I tested who was playing a sport was a 5, and he smoked and was a wee bit pudgy.

I'd love to give this a crack again... Think I got around level 10 in 3rd year of school and 12 in 6th year when I was training hard.

I used to do these in crunch tallaght and you got 3 failures before you got stopped, so if you didnt make it it to the cone would count as a fail, i recall scoring in the 12.8 region and falling over afterwards....

8.6 should be no hassles at all

If you are reasonable fit you shouldn't have any problems with 8.6. That level is less than 10 mins running in total, granted your speed increases as you go on, but the first few levels are not really that taxing.

Never heard of this before, wiki shows this
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-stage_fitness_test

A 12 is min for the UK Parachute Regiment, 13.1 for singapore soccer team.

I have heard of some tough requirements for fire service jobs before.

Should you be worried? Nope! Level 8 comes fairly quickly in the track. The last time I was bleep tested for the job it was Level 11 minimum, and that was fine.

If I can make some points:
    1) It's in 4 days, if you can fit a trial run in today or tomorrow morning I would do it. Otherwise, just keep training as you were. A few lads who did it with me tried doing a practice bleep test a few days before the real thing, and ended up with achey muscles for the tests.
    2) Try to alternate which way you turn as you reach each line. If you keep turning-off on 1 foot, you'll tire it out (as I learned!)
    3) Anything up to 10 is quite achievable if you're unfit but mentally robust. You seem to be active enough, so just keep the head up and remember, you'll only be running for less than 8 minutes, the first 4 of which are practically walking!

Best of luck. The 8.6 level seems low enough... You don't happen to be either a) female or worse b) a guy whos looked at the females requirements?! Just checking :D
A 12 is min for the UK Parachute Regiment

Some 17 year old bags of **** from the Parachute Regiment over took me in a timed run 2 weeks ago, and did 1.5 miles in ~7:50. I'm pretty sure that they all have greyhounds somewhere in their ancestry!!

proper footwork/turning technique can improve your score

For the OP, is it worth practicing a new technique so close to the test??

Will Heffernan had a few videos on turning technique, can't find any of them right now though.

8.6 isn't that high assuming that means level 8 shuttle 6. It's about 10 mins or less of activity and bear in mind the first few are just above a walk. Keep time with beep, don't arrive too early at turn and never run in a loop through the line. It should be slide in usually your stinger foot hits the line, touch and go. Good footwear helps too. Our top kids get 16/17. But you would be horrified if I told you what some of our students drop out at after 3 mins of activity! A lot of it is mental and how hard you are willing to push yourself and of course you can get better with practice.

    Hi all

I did the beep test this morning and pass. it was ok at the start up to level 7 then we all started to feel it do i say we could have stayed going for a bit more.
about 20% of people doing it failed.

so thanks all for the info

Well done! Maybe it was the short-notice that put people off, but how did 20% fail 8.6 on a bleep test? I know I'll get eaten for this, but was it mainly women who failed?
