Hi guys, i was wondering if a thread on bargains from DX, dino direct and the likes would be a good idea? a lot of the stuff can be hit or miss and hard to trust the reviews so maybe if boardsies could post their purchases and how they found the product?

(Also, 20% cashback on all purchases for dino direct through fatcheese dont forget!)

Some things are not that good a deal, like higher capacity memory cards and decent torches. Some items are also a false economy if you want them for any more than a few uses.

-Some great cheap tat on DX though, I love getting packages with new toys in the post that I had forgotten I ordered :pac:

I like buyincoins.com myself not as big a range of stuff as DX or focalprice but orders ship from Singapore and always seem to arrive with me in around 7 days, whereas DX usually took 3 times as long or more when I used them.

I bought a wii controller for the kids recently from buyincoins, it is identical to the original inc. logos for a fraction of the cost of a genuine one in the shops.

But as others have said price and value are not to be confused!

I've seen on a few orders "use this other SKU to get your order shiped from the UK" which sounds intersting. Will be getting something from there, and will post up somewhere of how long it took.

Seen that too, its a DX trial apparently, same prices, but delivery in three days if the forums are to be believed, will be giving this a go soon stocking up for Christmas!

As said, a lot of the stuff is False Economy. I know this is the case with their Earphones. I've bought about 5 different pairs from them at about €3/€4 each and each lasted no longer than 2 months and were extremely uncomfortable. But I was stupid enough to keep buying them, because they were so cheap.

DX has now a UK warehouse but currently only a limited amount of articles available but shipping times are supposed to be much quicker and once they have a larger selection in that warehouse it should be great. Also hate those insane shipping times, just as everyone else.

This is worth keeping an eye on, they've jumped on the group deal bandwagon and often have decent offers.

some items from this sites are indeed good ,but it depends what kind you have bought

Ok here are some of my random mini-reviews on previous purchases of random craap!

Fake Lego Piano - random birthday present. Won't know til it's opened!
USB Wired Laser Mouse - using as work mouse and working very well so far!
Multi-function Card Tool (2 pack) - It's living in my wallet and dunno if I'll ever use it, but it seems useful anyway! 2-pack for that price is pretty unbelievable!
Nokia Data Cable - Works fine so far, no problems on my N8
Nokia Wired Headet - Looks a bit fake and haven't used it yet to review.
Solar Windmill - one of my favourite random gadgets! Sits in the window at work and spins all day (when it's a bit bright anyway!). Always wanted one of these and the only other one I could find on DX or Focal Price was about $40 and silver! Buy it!
R/C Helicopter - Bought as a random present for a friend. Haven't seen in action yet but eant to be fine. Seems like the one that gets best reviews. I picked one up in China last year in a market and had to haggle hard to get the guy to € 10 with batteries, so this is a pretty good price I reckon. That said, the one earlier in this thread was cheaper!
    N8 Stylus - Absolute rubbish - avoid!
Magnetic Spheres (20 pack) - At this price they're worth a punt! I previously got some on Gruupy then picked these up. Both seem grand quality and coating hasn't scratched off yet!
Lightsaber - A DX classic! Can't go wrong with these! I usually order a few and stick em in birthday cars as novelty gifts or something!
USB Bluetooth Dongle - Another useful gadget for work. I use this for transferring data from other phones in work when the data cable isn't the right match. I'd give it 8/10 seems a bit temperamental sometimes!
World's Smallest Solar Car - Well they work, but they're useless! Unless you develop some sort of track for it to drive arounf with walls to push it into turning it's not going to do much after crossing the windowsill once! A good science experiment anyway.
Mushroom - Don't ask..... I buy a lot of random things. Some are great. This is not.
Apple / Pear Notepads - Dirt cheap and like the lightsaber it's good for birthday cards!
Gyro Wrist Ball (no smart remarks please!) - Works surprisingly well and a LOT cheaper than them powerball yokes. It lacks a spin counter but the thing works and lights up! Meant to be good for racket sports.
Static Discharger - Yes, I actually bought one of these! Was sick of being zapped constantly in my local superquinn due to either their flooring else my footwear! It defo works but takes up space on keyring.

More rubbish to follow! Anyone else got recommendations?

    Word of warning folks.

Got a parcel from Dinodirect worth 44 euro today and got hit for 12 euro duty. It was opened by customs and I got charged on delivery.

They are watching out for items with dinodirect on them.

This order was the last item missing from a shipment I got two weeks ago. It was also opened but no extra duty charged.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,907 ✭✭✭✭Kristopherus

DX now have a UK warehouse. I assume that means no trouble with Customs on items despatched from there, as the stuff is already in the EU?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 246 ✭✭rh5555

Yeah stuff coming from within Europe won't be checked. Also if you buy cheap stuff just don't try to go over E25 or so, actual limit is E22 but they won't bother if its over by just a little bit and just send out different orders that are all in this price range. Shipping is free anyways and so it makes no difference.

If you buy something for over E30 or so and it's only 1 item you may or may not get stung with custom charges. I always stay within E25 or split orders to stay under and never got hit with customs so far.

The novelty drinking bird from deal extreme! always wanted one of these, didn't expect it to work so good! It goes for weeks, untill the water level drops in the glass and then just fill it up again! One of the most practical things ever ;-)

    http://www.dealextreme.com/p/novelty-dippy-drinking-bird-29233

http://www.dealextreme.com/p/super-mini-bluetooth-2-0-adapter-dongle-vista-compatible-11866 : got two, one works perfect, the other is a good pranking tool as it stops the mouse working on a computer! so 50% success

http://www.dealextreme.com/p/elm327-bluetooth-obd-ii-wireless-transceiver-dongle-16921 HAve had a lot of trouble with these, connects to torque on my phone and computer programs but won't connect to the ECU of my mark 2 ford mondeo, my friends mar 3 mondeo or my dads berlingo. Can't find the correct protocall... Saw great reviews on the site so ordered one for me and my mate... could get neither working.. sent them back and noticed now mixed reviews on the site and people with same problems in forum... got 2 replacements.. neither worked again, same prob so sending back again, this time for refund.. although i think all i will get is store credit.. so i'll have $100 to spend there! not sure what international consumer law is, am I entitled to cash back?

Cigerette to usb converter: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/car-cigarette-powered-1000ma-usb-adapter-charger-black-dc-12v-40470 great buy especially when combined with this multilead http://www.dealextreme.com/p/10-in-1-usb-powered-charging-cable-for-ipod-psp-cell-phones-34674 although the cables could be longer on the leads....

other than that it's been mostly batteries and stuff, nothing major I can recall! my colleague is impressed with the LED bulbs...

Cheers, hadn't come across those 10 in one leads before must get one and throw it in the glovebox, it's actually a good bit cheaper on buyincoins @ US$1.90.

I have one of those usb chargers already but spotted this one earlier this week, it has two usb sockets plus the cigarette lighter socket so I should be able to have my phone on charge whilst still powering the sat-nav.

Ordered last Tuesday at noon with a Dealextreme UK SKU, got a "we missed you" letter from AnPost marked at 11.25 today. A week; not exactly three days, but not bad, esp when postage is free :D

FYI: when you get the tracking number, put it into the box at http://track.anpost.ie/track/trackone.html to track it.

Interesting - could you post the SKU of the ones you ordered?

One of the main things I have recommended to friends are the headphones from DealExtreme (I presume that's the site you ordered from?).

These are the ones. €2.66 delivered.

    sku_4305_1.jpg

In my house, they are used instead of the headphones that come with phones, etc. as they are more comfortable.

I'd just be interested to see what type of headphones you had a bad experience with (so I can avoid them!!):D

Not sure what you mean?

They're not "fake" as in pretending to be one brand but turning out to be something else.

They actually don't have a brand on them. I was just pointing out the ones I like to use. IMHO, you would normally spend 15 or 20 euro to get similar quality to these.

Obviously if you regularly spend more on headphones, then that's a different market altogether.

    Depends on what you get
DX sell cheap and cheerful stuff
don't expect anything with a brand name to be genuine
there will be some well dodgy stuff there

I'll buy nick-nacks and gizmos' there

I would not buy a smart phone or android off them

    buyincoins +1

    lightinthebox worth a look too

cables and small usb devices and pound shop stuff you can't go wrong

Bought an xbox 360 Halo style wireless headset > 1 month ago and it's still working fine. Here's my review:

    sku_65470_1.jpg
    Pros:
    Seems to work ok

    Cons:
    Almost definitely not genuine
    Badly packed
    Oily!

    Other Thoughts:
Got this for my 13 year old son and he seems pleased enough with it so far. It arrived in bubble wrap without any retail packaging. I'm pretty sure it's not genuine - power button is chromed plastic (not orange as it should be)and doesn't click (vol ones do though). Also the silicone bit that goes behind the ear was covered in some kind of yucky oil (maybe to stop it perishing our some kind lubricant to help it out of the mould).

    Bottomline:
As always with DX you get what you pay for. In this case a poorly packaged, oily knock-off. Having said that it seems to work ok so far but I guess time will tell - will post again in about 1 month.

I had run out of usb ports on my work PC so picked up a couple of these adaptors cost about €1.70 each

    usb-hub-06-01.jpg

Windows 7 picked it up and installed a generic usb hub driver for it no problem.

I'm using one so far with all four slots in use, it's working great with no problems or conflicts, the design is great as you can connect bulky items like dongles and not lose the slot next to it as happens with some hubs/PC's.

don't expect anything with a brand name to be genuine
Most will be fakes, but I did see they are now selling victorinox brand knives (swiss army).

    http://s.dealextreme.com/search/victorinox

can't be sure if they are real but one review said
    Cons:
    - It's rather hard to unleash some tools because of its brand new condition, maybe following instruction (put into water and open - close tools continously, then dry and drop oil again) will help.
I see this as a good sign! fakes are usually very loose.

There was a post made here, must have been deleted, saying they bought a LED lightbulb and it blew up. But checking the link it was a 100-120V bulb.

Just be careful of voltages when buying online.
